Klotho, an antiaging protein, has been shown to play a protective role in renal tubular epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participate in the progression of EMT in many diseases. However, the effect of Klotho on lncRNAs during the development of DKD is still unknown. In this study, we found that Klotho overexpression in high-fat diet (HFD)- and streptozotocin (STZ)- induced DKD mice significantly inhibited the expression of lncRNA nuclear-enriched abundant transcript 1 (Neat1). We demonstrated that NEAT1 was significantly upregulated in both bovine serum albumin (BSA)-stimulated HK2 cells and mice with HFD- and STZ-induced diabetes. In addition, we observed that Klotho displays colocalization with NEAT1. Furthermore, overexpression of Klotho can inhibit the high expression of NEAT1 in BSA-stimulated HK2 cells, while silencing Klotho can further upregulate the expression of NEAT1. Silencing NEAT1 in HK2 cells resulted in inhibition of the EMT-related markers alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and vimentin (VIM) and the renal fibrosis-related markers transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). The effect of NEAT1 on DKD was partly mediated by regulation of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Finally, we found that silencing NEAT1 can reverse the activation of EMT and fibrosis caused by Klotho silencing in a manner dependent on the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. These findings reveal a new regulatory pathway by which Klotho regulates ERK1/2 signaling via NEAT1 to protect against EMT and renal fibrosis, suggesting that NEAT1 is a potential therapeutic target for DKD.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the survival trends and patterns of failure in patients with stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy over the last 20 years. Materials and Methods Thirty-eight hundred and eight patients diagnosed with stage II NPC between January 1990 and December 2012 were involved in this retrospective cohort study. All patients were treated with RT. According to the main imaging techniques and RT technology, we categorized these patients into four calendar periods: 1990-1996, 1997-2002, 2003-2007, and 2008-2012. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS), and distant metastasis–free survival (DMFS) were served as the clinical outcome. Results After a median follow-up period of 84.7 months, we observed increasing trends in survival and disease control. The 3- and 5-year OS rates increased from 87.1% and 78.7% in the first calendar period to 97.4% and 94.5% in the last calendar period, respectively (p < 0.001). Additionally, significant increasing trends could be seen in the PFS and LRFS during the four calendar periods. In the subgroup analysis, the LRFS in patients older than 50 years at diagnosis showed greater improvement than younger patients. However, the rate of distant metastasis was stable and relatively low, as the 5-year DMFS ranged from 90.5% to 94.7% among the four calendar periods. Conclusion The survival rates in patients with stage II NPC showed increasing trends from 1990 to 2012. The advance of RT provided excellent locoregional control and enhanced OS.
Defining Peace: Peace vs. Security
( Xue Tong Yan ) 한국국방연구원 2004 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.16 No.1
One of the most popular beliefs in the modern world is that peace means security. Meanwhile many wars have been fought for the sake of security at the price of peace. The article argues that the state of security differs in terms of the degree of security. Peace is only one state of security, along with the other two states of security: war and neither-peace-nor-war. Peace comprises four degrees of security: no security, partial security, fair security and absolute security. These inherent characteristics of peace, explain why people substitute peace for war. As a social phenomenon, peace shares some common characteristics with war. Peace is an objective sought by man as well as a means used by man. Therefore, the justice of peace is determined by human concepts rather than by peace per se. These social characteristics of peace explain why peace has no superior justice over war. In terms of the social qualities of peace, it is clear that peace is an objective that people hope to achieve, but it is not the highest one for national security. Therefore, we should not confuse "peace" with "security." Peace is one way to resolve conflict but not necessarily the most efficient way. Accordingly, we should take care not to regard "maintaining peace" as the essential approach to strengthening national security. Peace as a criterion for justice is true only in some situations; peace achieved through power politics is an injustice.

Background and Purpose This study aimed to determine the changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients who received different durations of hemodialysis (HD) using arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging. Methods The study included 46 patients who received HD and 24 demographically similar healthy controls (HCs). Patients who received HD were divided into three subgroups based on its duration: HD-1 (n=15, dialysis duration ≤24 months), HD-2 (n=16, dialysis duration >24 and ≤72 months), and HD-3 (n=15, dialysis duration ≥73 months). All subjects completed the Mini Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment tests, and the patients who received HD underwent laboratory tests. Group-level differences in the global and regional CBFs between patients who received HD and HCs were assessed. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the associations among CBF, clinical variables, and cognitive function. Results Compared with HCs, global and regional CBFs were significantly increased in the HD-1 and HD-2 groups (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the HD-3 group (p>0.05). However, compared with the HD-1 group, the HD-3 group had significantly decreased global and regional CBFs (p<0.05). The cognitive function was worse in patients who received long-term HD than in HCs. Increased dialysis duration and hemoglobin level were predictive risk factors for decreased CBF in patients who received long-term HD. Conclusions Patients who received long-term HD with normal CBF had worse cognitive function, which may be related to increased dialysis duration.
The Study of Influencing Factors of Mobile E-commerce Software Use Intention-based on TAM and TRA
Yan Zhao,Ya-Ru Xue,Yan-Fei Jin,Jun-Wei Li,Yi He 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Grid and Distributed Comp Vol.9 No.8
With the wide popularity of mobile devices, e-commerce software in the mobile client forms a larger consumer market, which makes the volume of e-commerce transactions having a wide range of growth. As the consumers have a frequent contact with mobile devices, which makes consumers pay more attention to security and entertainment of the e-commerce software. Past mobile e-business research typically focus on the related factors about transaction process, like interface design, services and user experience, but seldom study the factors about consumers. On the basis of the TAM, this paper not only added perceived security and perceived entertainment, but also the consumers’ personality factors like subjective norm in TRA, into the model. The study shows that PU, PEU, PS and PE all will have direct or indirect effects on use attitude and use intention, and subjective norms and use attitude will directly affect the consumers' use intention. Through the empirical analysis we found that e-commerce operators not only make the consumers experience more of usefulness and ease of use, security, and entertainment in the technology and services, but also improve the popularity with the aid of the mainstream media propaganda and star power to enhance the public's normative beliefs, which will ultimately affect the user behavior of the consumers.
Transducer analysis and signal processing of PMSF with embedded bluff body
Yan, Xiao-Xue,Xu, Ke-Jun,Xu, Wei,Yu, Xin-Long,Wu, Jian-Ping Korean Nuclear Society 2020 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.52 No.2
Permanent magnet sodium flowmeter (PMSF) have been used to measure the sodium flow in fast breeder reactors. Due to the effects of irradiation, thermal cycling, time lapse, etc., the magnetic flux density of the PMSF will decrease after being used in the reactor for a period of time. Therefore, it must be calibrated regularly. But some flowmeters that immersed in sodium cannot be removed for an off-line calibration, so the on-line calibration is required. However, the best online calibration accuracy of PMSF using cross-correlation analysis method was 2.0-level without considering the repeatability. In order to further improve this work, the operational principle of the transducer in PMSF is analyzed and the design principle of the transducer is proposed. The transducers were tested on the sodium flow loop to collect the experimental data. The signal characteristics are analyzed from the time and frequency domains, respectively. The cross-correlation analysis method based on biased estimation is adopted to obtain the flow rate. The verification experimental results showed that the measurement accuracy is 1.0-level when the flow velocity is above 0.5 m/s, and the measurement accuracy is 3.0-level when the flow velocity is in the range of 0.2 m/s to 0.5 m/s.
