The interaction between poly(dimethylamine-co-epichlorohydrin-co-ethylene-diamine) with positive charges and nitrate ions in synthetic water was investigated during ultrafiltration (UF). The adsorption behaviour of nitrate onto cationic polyelectrolyte was evaluated with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms in dilute polyelectrolyte solutions. During UF, ionic strength, Debye–Hu¨ ckel screening length, average electric potentials at the polyelectrolyte interface, and the amount of nitrates adsorbed per mole of polymeric functional groups were estimated at different concentration factors. The results indicated that polyelectrolyte skeletons tended to coil at a higher concentration factor. It was also discovered that adsorbed nitratewas released from the polyelectrolyteswhile making their surface charge more positive at high concentration factors. The coiling of polyelectrolyte chains caused negative effects on the lateral interactions of nitrate with the polyelectrolyte.

A novel synergic adsorption process of acid blue 80 dye (AB80) and heavy metal ions (Cu2+ or Ni2+) on alow-cost activated carbon (PRAC) which was prepared from potato residue was reported. The resultsindicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of PRAC for AB80 and Cu2+ were 294.7 mg/g and45.0 mg/g in the AB80-Cu2+ system, respectively. In the mono-component system, the values were173.0 mg/g and 26.8 mg/g, respectively. Compared with mono-component system, the AB80 and Cu2+showed good synergistic effect on PRAC. The similarly result was revealed in the AB80-Ni2+ system. For abinary system, the adsorption isotherm of AB80 and heavy metal ions followed the non-modified Sipsmodel, and the adsorption kinetic models followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The effect ofpH also was discussed, and showed significant role in the binary-component system adsorption. Theselectivity in synergic adsorption was discussed. BET, FE-SEM/EDX and XPS were used to characterizePRAC with and without adsorbed dye and heavy metal ions, possible mechanisms of AB80 and heavymetal ions synergic adsorption process were proposed.

Extreme rainfall events have triggered quantities of shallow landslides, which are extensively distributed in the southern part of Qin-ba Mountainous Region, China in recent years. Rainfall-induced shallow landslides commonly involve one-meter-thick of superficial deposits and are characterized by features of imperceptible deformation prior to the initiation and of a rapid landslide triggering process. A combined hydrological monitoring and a hydro-mechanical modelling method was proposed and applied in evaluating the effects of variably saturated flow in triggering mechanism of shallow landslides on slopes with representative geomorphological features at a small basin range. Geomorphological and geological investigations on the test-site slope and the surrounding catchment have been firstly carried out to characterize the typical stratigraphic sequences and geotechnical features of landslides. Then, a field hydrological monitoring experiment was initiated at a landslide to facilitate evaluattion of the seasonal hydrological features and the critical triggering condition of rainfall-induced shallow landslides. The first year of data reveals that a transition from unsaturated to near-saturated flow was reliably acquired throughout a complete hydrological year. Furthermore, the monitoring results provide a conceptual hydrological model for modelling the triggering process of shallow landslides on slopes with representative local geomorphological features in the catchment, with the aim of determining the effect of such predisposing factor on the triggering mechanism in hydrological-driven shallow landslide. Results indicates that local morphology changes can affect the variably saturated flow mechanism and subsequent slope stabilities.

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is commonly applied in laser dermatology to protect epidermis from thermal damage. Many efforts have been conducted to improve the cooling capacity of CSC, among which the use of expansion-chambered nozzles is simple and with great potential. This study examined the influence of expansion-chambered nozzle structure including the ratio of the two orifice diameter and expansion chamber volume on the R134a and R404A spray cooling. Fifteen transparent expansion-chambered nozzles with expansion chamber aspect ratio of 1, diameter of expansion chamber ranges from 5 mm to 10 mm and the ratio of the two orifice diameter ranges from 0.6 to 1.4 as well as the straight-tube nozzle were compared. The internal flow pattern inside the expansion chamber, spray pattern and surface heat transfer characteristics of cryogen spray using different nozzles were investigated. It was found that the spray radius was declined when the expansion-chambered nozzles were used, and the spray radius showed a negative relation with the expansion chamber volume and positive relation with the ratio of two orifice diameters. The introduction of expansion-chambered nozzle could effectively improve the spray cooling capacity, and the minimum average surface temperature during the full developed period of spray could be reached by the nozzle with expansion chamber diameter of 5 mm and ratio of two orifice of 0.6 was adopted for both R134a spray and R404A spray.

<P>Polymer/perovskite manganese oxide (epoxy resin/La<SUB>0.8</SUB>Sr<SUB>0.2</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB>) composites are prepared using bonded method. There is no reaction between La<SUB>0.8</SUB>Sr<SUB>0.2</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB> and the polymer. The nonlinear current–voltage property is significantly affected by the content of polymer. The resistivity and nonlinear coefficient increase with the increase of polymer content. The resistivity of the composites is 5–9 orders of magnitude higher than that of the sintering ceramics. The nonlinear electrical behavior is an intrinsic property. Compared with conventional sintered ceramic varistors, the polymer/manganese oxide composite varistors have greater nonlinear coefficient above 45.</P>
Attitude Maneuver of Dual Rigid Bodies Spacecraft Using hp-Adaptive Pseudo-spectral Method

The spatial attitude optimal control problem of a spacecraft system with dual rigid bodies interconnected by a frictionless universal joint is considered. Based on the conservation of angular momentum, the dynamical model of the system is deduced using Quaternion. For there exists non-square matrix in the dynamical equation caused by the representation of Quaternion, the first-order derivative of the scalar section in Quaternion is employed to serve as a pseudo-control input for the system. Then the motion planning problem of the system can be discretized into a nonlinear programming problem based on hpadaptive Radau pseudo-spectral method. Comparing with the previous works, the hp-adaptive method and the pseudo-control input is combined together to deal with the potential non-square matrix. Also as a contrast to the use of pseudo-control input employed in hp-adaptivemethod, another method (the Radau pseudo-spectralmethod) and the theory of pseudo-inverse matrix is adopted. The effectiveness of hp-adaptive method on the system expressed by pseudo-control input and the rationality of the Radau pseudo-spectral method on the system expressed by pseudo-inverse matrix is demonstrated and verified perfectly through numerical simulation.

Reachable Set Estimation for Uncertain Linear Systems with Known Inputs

This paper studies a reachable set estimation for systems with parameter uncertainties and known input. A new method is proposed for estimating real-time reachable sets of systems with parameter uncertainties, known input and non-zero initial condition. In order to reduce the effect of known inputs on the reachable set estimation, we propose a method by separating the uncertain systems into two subsystems: the subsystem with known input and the subsystem with parameter uncertainties. By solving the optimization problem in terms of linear matrix inequalities, real-time reachable sets are obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by the simulation result of the lateral dynamic system of a vehicle.
