        Transcriptome profiling of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) discovers candidate regulators of the cold stress respo

        Tropical plant rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is the sole source of commercial natural rubber and low-temperature stress is the most important limiting factor for its cultivation. To characterize the gene expression profiles of H. brasiliensis under the cold stress and discover the key cold stress-induced genes. Three cDNA libraries, CT (control), LT2 (cold treatment at 4 °C for 2 h) and LT24 (cold treatment at 4 °C for 24 h) were constructed for RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and gene expression profiling. Quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was conducted to validate the RNA-Seq and gene differentially expression results. A total of 1457 and 2328 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in LT2 and LT24 compared with CT were respectively detected. Most significantly enriched KEGG pathways included flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction, cutin, suberine and wax biosynthesis, Pentose and glucuronate interconversions, phenylalanine metabolism and starch and sucrose metabolism. A total of 239 transcription factors (TFs) were differentially expressed following 2 h or/and 24 h of cold treatment. Cold-response transcription factor families included ARR-B, B3, BES1, bHLH, C2H, CO-like, Dof, ERF, FAR1, G2-like, GRAS, GRF, HD-ZIP, HSF, LBD, MIKC-MADS, M-type MADS, MYB, MYB-related, NAC, RAV, SRS, TALE, TCP, Trihelix, WOX, WRKY, YABBY and ZF-HD. The genome-wide transcriptional response of rubber tree to the cold treatments were determined and a large number of DEGs were characterized including 239 transcription factors, providing important clues for further elucidation of the mechanisms of cold stress responses in rubber tree.

        Characterization and Antioxidant Activity of the Exopolysaccharide Produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1

        The exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1 was isolated and purified by ethanol precipitation, and DEAE-cellulose and Sepharose CL-6B chromatographies. The molecular mass of the purified EPS was determined to be 54 kDa. Monosaccharide analysis showed that the EPS was composed of predominantly glucose, and it was further confirmed by NMR spectroscopy to be α-glucan that consisted of a trisaccharide repeating unit with possible presence of two α-(1→3) and one α-(1→6) glucosidic linkages. Microstructural analysis showed that the EPS appeared as ellipsoid or globose with a smooth surface. The EPS had a degradation temperature at 240℃. Furthermore, the EPS had strong DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, and moderate superoxidant anion scavenging and metal ion-chelating activities. This is the first characterization of a glucan produced by B. amyloliquefaciens with strong antioxidant activity. The results of this study suggest the potential of the EPS from B. amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1 to serve as a natural antioxidant for application in functional products.

        Pd/Ce0.9Cu0.1O1.9-Y2O3 catalysts for catalytic combustion of toluene and ethyl acetate

        A dual-functional Pd/CuO-CeO2-Y2O3 (Pd/CCY) using CuO-CeO2 as precursor was prepared and tested for catalytic combustion of toluene and ethyl acetate. It was found that the catalyst is much higher active and thermally stable for combustion of both toluene and ethyl acetate, compared with the catalyst prepared with the conventional method. Therefore, the formation of the CuO-CeO2 solid solution before coating is the key to high activity and thermal stability. Moreover, Pd/PdO species are the active phase for oxidation of toluene, while CuO or CuO-CeO2 is responsible for oxidation of ethyl acetate, and the formation of the Pd probably impels the enhancement of activity for the catalyst calcined at 1000℃.

        Blue organic light-emitting diodes with 2-methyl-9,10- bis(naphthalen-2-yl)anthracene as hole transport and emitting layer and the impedance spectroscopy analysis

        2-methyl-9,10-bis(naphthalen-2-yl)anthracene (MADN) based fluorescent blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are demonstrated. With MADN as emitting layer, experiments indicate that thick MADN (40e60 nm) is preferable for constructing efficient blue OLED. With MADN as hole-transport and emitting layer and tris(8-hydroxy-quinolinato)aluminium (Alq3) as electron-transport layer, the OLED electroluminescent characteristics show a mixture emission of MADN and Alq3 with Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.25, 0.34), indicating feasible hole transporting in MADN. Using 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BPhen) replacing Alq3 as electron-transport layer, the OLED shows deep blue emission with a maximum luminous efficiency of 4.8 cd/A and CIE color coordinates of (0.16, 0.09). The hole transport characteristics of MADN are further clarified by constructing hole-only device and performing impedance spectroscopy analysis. The results indicate that MADN shows superior hole-transport ability which is almost comparable to typical hole-transport material of N,N0-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-N,N0-bis(phenyl)-benzidine (NPB), suggesting a promising application for constructing efficient blue OLED with integrated hole-transport layer and emitting layer.

        Experimental Investigation Regarding Rack Pressure Resistance on Cooling Performance of a Container Data Center

        This paper experimentally investigates the effect of pressure resistance distribution by using perforated grilles with different porosities (F=100%, 58% and 35.4%) in a container data center. The inlet and outlet temperature distribution, rack cooling index (RCI) and supply heat index (SHI) are used to evaluate the cooling performance under semi-contained and fully contained configurations. As a result, the airflow reversal phenomenon at the top cabinets is found, which is especially conspicuous for the case without perforated grilles due to the extremely low pressure resistance in the cabinet. By implementing perforated grilles at lower three cabinets, the airflow reversal can be eliminated, however, it cannot be completely removed. By applying perforated grilles with F=35.4% at the top three cabinets can increase the pressure resistance at the cabinets S1 where the airflow reversal is eliminated thoroughly. Yet, the performance of cabinets at rack A1 may degrade rapidly due to much stronger hot-exhaust recirculation. Hence, the fully contained configuration is applied. Note that the airflow reversal is more severe for the case without perforated grilles. By arranging the perforated grilles with F = 35.4%, the corresponding RCI and SHI may reach the ideal values of 100% and zero, respectively. Therefore, the perforated grilles with F= 35.4% are more reasonable for simulated racks under semi-contained and fully contained configurations when airflow reversal occurs.

        Further Results on the Robust Stability for Neutral-type Lur’e System with Mixed Delays and Sector-bounded Nonlinearities

        This paper is concerned with the robust stability for neutral-type Lur’e system with mixed time-varyingdelays. By combining the delay-fraction theory with the reciprocally convex method andWirtinger-based inequalitytechnology, some new delay-derivative-dependent stability criteria are derived via a modified Lyapunov-Krasovskiifunctional (LKF) approach. The criteria are less conservative than some previous ones.

      • Empirical study on the effect of FDI on China's international trade structure

        Since the economic reform and opening up, China"s international trade and foreign direct investment have been increasing both highly and stably. It is very important to investigate the relationship between FDI and China"s international trade structure. Using data from 1986 to 2005, this paper creates an index of TSA to measure the trade structure advantage and then analysis the effect of FDI on China"s trade structure by the means of empirical study. The result shows that becausej of FDI"s spill-over effect on technology, innovation and management, FDI has active impact on optimization of China"s international trade structure in long term. At the meantime, there is high risk that FDI plays an opposite role in short term because of time lag from investment to income and the situation of "high import low export" in processing trade. Finally relevant suggestions are put forward to make good use of spill-over effect and management the risk.

        Understanding Chinese Dyslexia

        Reading and writing are inevitably affected by the features of the orthography in question. This paper aims to examine the manifestation and causes of dyslexia in logographic Chinese. Studies to date have suggested that phonological processing skills are associated with reading difficulties in Chinese as they are in other writing systems. In addition, Chinese dyslexics also appear to be impaired on orthographic processing and rapid naming. In particular, they show difficulties in using knowledge about the internal structures of Chinese characters to read unfamiliar and infrequent words. It is therefore likely that deficits in both orthographic and phonological processing are responsible for reading failure in Chinese.

        Effects of Modafinil on Behavioral Learning and Hippocampal Synaptic Transmission in Rats

        Purpose: Modafinil is a wake-promoting agent that has been proposed to improve cognitive performance at the preclinical and clinical levels. Since there is insufficient evidence for modafinil to be regarded as a cognitive enhancer, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic modafinil administration on behavioral learning in healthy adult rats. Methods: Y-maze training was used to assess learning performance, and the whole-cell patch clamp technique was used to assess synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons of the hippocampal CA1 region of rats. Results: Intraperitoneal administration of modafinil at 200 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg significantly improved learning performance. Furthermore, perfusion with 1mM modafinil enhanced the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous postsynaptic currents and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons in hippocampal slices. However, the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons were inhibited by treatment with 1mM modafinil. Conclusions: These results indicate that modafinil improves learning and memory in rats possibly by enhancing glutamatergic excitatory synaptic transmission and inhibiting GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic) inhibitory synaptic transmission.

        Elucidations of weak microcavity effect and improved pixel contrast ratio in Si-based top-emitting organic light-emitting diode

        Microcavity effect and pixel contrast ratio (PCR) are key issues for top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (TOLED). Si and Ag are two widely used reflective anodes for constructing effective TOLEDs. The mechanism contributing to microcavity effect and PCR has been clarified by using conventional optoelectronic theory. Consequently, the differences of microcavity effect and PCR between Si-based and Agbased TOLEDs are discovered. Our results indicate that the Si-based TOLED possesses weak microcavity effect and improved PCR in comparison with Ag-based device. This is resulted from the low reflectivity and less reflective phase change of Si. The weak microcavity effect in Si-based TOLED also contributes to negligible variation of electroluminescent spectra with viewing angles and low device efficiency. Furthermore, Si-based TOLED shows rather high PCR which is about quintuple that of Ag-based device.
