The 20th century in China was a time for Chinese people to awake and the nation to rise as a power in the world. To explore the construct of the Chinese ethics with the world as the background is a constant theme, both dyschronous and synchronous, that penetrates Lao She's works. In 1920s, based on the comparison and contrast of the West and the East, he examined the inherent weaknesses of Chinese nation. In 1930s, for the purpose of rescuing the nation, he explored the origins of the inherent weaknesses of Chinese people all-dimensionally. His works in 1940s, like an X-ray, offered an accurate reflection of people's moral conducts during wartime, and he provided the blueprints of constructing the nation's ethics: After 1949, with great enthusiasm, he sought for the practical means for and the historical law of the construction of the nation's ethics. In brief, Lao She's works may be seen as the Revelations that offer us an insight into the construct of the national ethics of modern China.

Objective: This experiment investigated meat color, myoglobin content, enzyme activities, and expression of genes associated with oxidative potential of pigs slaughtered at different growth stages. Methods: Sixty 4-week-old Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire pigs were assigned to 6 replicate groups, each containing 10 pigs. One pig from each group was sacrificed at day 35, 63, 98, and 161 to isolate longissimus dorsi and triceps muscles. Results: Meat color scores were higher in pigs at 35 d than those at 63 d and 98 d (p<0.05), and those at 98 d were lower than those at 161 d (p<0.05). The total myoglobin was higher on 161 d compared with those at 63 d and 98 d (p<0.05). Increase in the proportions of metmyoglobin and deoxymyoglobin and a decrease in oxymyoglobin were observed between days 35 and 161 (p<0.05). Meat color scores were correlated to the proportion of oxymyoglobin (r = 0.59, p<0.01), and negatively correlated with deoxymyoglobin and metmyoglobin content (r = –0.48 and –0.62, p<0.05). Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activity at 35 d and 98 d was higher than that at 161 d (p<0.05). The highest lactate dehydrogenase/MDH ratio was achieved at 161 d (p<0.05). Calcineurin mRNA expression decreased at 35 d compared to that at 63 d and 98 d (p<0.05). Myocyte enhancer factor 2 mRNA results indicated a higher expression at 161 d than that at 63 d and 98 d (p<0.05). Conclusion: Porcine meat color, myoglobin content, enzyme activities, and genes associated with oxidative potential varied at different stages.
Temporal Variations in Seaweed Biomass and Coverage in Korean Coasts: Ongdo, Chungnam
Xiao Qin Wan,Hyang Ha Park,Hyun Il Yoo,Han Gil Choi 한국수산학회 2009 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.12 No.2
Temporal variations of seaweed biomass and coverage were seasonally examined at Ongdo in the Yellow Sea, Korea from August 2006 to April 2008. Average seaweed biomass was 245.79 g/m2 in wet weight and coverage was 16.49% with seasonal variations from 13.97% in spring to 18.55% in autumn. Seaweeds were distributed across the shore gradient from the high intertidal to 10m depth in the subtidal zone. Biomass was always higher in the subtidal zone (310.24 g/m2) than in the intertidal zone (181.35 g/m2). Of total seaweed biomass, 76.52% (first year) and 80.32% (second year) occurred from the low intertidal zone, down to depth of 1 to 5m. Gelidium amansii had the highest importance value and biomass, and subdominant species were Chondrus ocellatus and Chondria crassicaulis. Coarsely-branched seaweeds comprised the highest proportion of biomass (214.84 g/m2, or 87.41% of the total biomss). Seasonal variations in algal biomass were largely explained by fluctuations in the biomass of coarsely-branched and thick-leathery forms. In conclusion, seaweed biomass of Ongdo shore was very low because of perennial G. amansii showing low biomass as compared to kelp or Sargassum spp. However, these results indicate Ongdo is good place to grow seaweeds because coarsely-branched form seaweeds including G. amansii are dominant at unpolluted and clean environment.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was established to analyze 36 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) samples collected from three species (Bupleurum chinense DC., B. scorzonerifolium Willd. and B. smithii Wolff.). Addition of trifluoroacetic acid into the mobile phase resulted in fingerprint chromatograms with stable baselines. There were thirty-two characteristic peaks in the standard fingerprint of B. chinense DC. Different recognition pattern methods, including similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) were utilized to analyze the 36 samples based on the contents of chemical constituents. Consistent results from SA, HCA and PCA analysis illustrated the rationalisation for why B. smithii Wolff. was not quoted in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and classified samples were in agreement with their species. PLS-DA loading plots showed the chemical markers which had the most influences on the separation among different species. However, SA, HCA and PCA could not differentiate between wild and cultivated B. chinense DC. as well as between samples from different provinces. HPLC fingerprint in combination with chemometric techniques provided a very flexible and reliable method for homogeneity evaluation and quality assessment of traditional Chinese medicine.

The activities on the inhibition of NO on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages were investigated in this work. A simple and sensitive method has been developed and validated for fingerprinting analysis of leaves of Acanthopanax gracilistylus W.W. Smith (AGS). The cytotoxicity and inhibition of NO on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells of the extract and triterpenoids were determined. Optimal conditions of HPLC analysis were established as follows. The separation was performed with an ODS-C18 column at 30 oC, the detected wavelength was 210 nm, the flow rate was 1 mL/min, and the mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile (0.05% phosphoric acid) -0.05% phosphoric acid solution with gradient elution. Our results showed that impressic acid and acankoreaogenin was more effective on the inhibition of NO than the methanol extract and other compounds. There were seventeen peaks coexisted with similarities above 0.95 and nine lupane-triterpenoids including acankoreaogenin and impressic acid detected and identified. The result of anti-inflammatory activities provides a potential explanation for the use of AGS leaves as a herbal medicine in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Our results also show that acankoreanogenin and impressic acid may be potentially useful in developing new anti-inflammatory agents. In addition, the fingerprint chromatography clearly illustrated and confirmed the material basis for the anti-inflammatory activities of this plant.
Multicolour carbon dots with excitation‑independent emission by microwave solvothermal reaction
Xiao‑Lan Wei,Qin‑Ling Shi,Lan Jiang,Yu Qin 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.1
Carbon dots (CDs) with tunable fluorescence emissions have been developed from a wide range of small organic molecules with various bottom-up syntheses. However, most of them were prepared under high temperatures and high pressures with long reaction times and tedious purification processes. In addition, previously reported carbon dots frequently displayed excitation-dependent emissions, which restrict their further applications. Herein, we present a simple and rapid microwaveassisted solvothermal synthesis of multicolour carbon dots with excitation-independent emissions. In ethylene glycol, the green (G)-CDs emitting at 537 nm with a quantum efficiency (QY) of 15% were obtained by using a single precursor of phloroglucinol, and blue (B)- and yellow (Y)-CDs emitting at 436 nm and 557 nm with QYs of 55% and 28% were derived with additives of o- and m-phenylenediamine, respectively. Analyses of their chemical structures and optical processes suggest that highly polymeric carbon dots were uniformly formed from the small molecules and their fluorescences were predominantly originated from rapid direct recombination. Furthermore, emissions at different wavelengths were mainly attributed to different degrees of oxidation (13.9%, 15.2% and 16.4% oxygen in B-, G- and Y-CDs, respectively) and different proportions of pyrrolic nitrogen (10.4% and 1.40% in B- and Y-CDs, respectively). To demonstrate the application feasibility, the obtained carbon dots were utilized for ion detection and anti-counterfeiting. Based on static quenching of the carbon dots’ fluorescence, micro amounts of ferric ion in water samples were detected selectively and reproducibly. Moreover, the anti-counterfeiting pattern constructed by the carbon dots emitted fluorescence under ultraviolet illumination, but concealed perfectly under daylight. This achievement is of great potential for developing multicolour carbon dots of high qualities.

Recently, there has been a growing body of evidence showing that cellular microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in virus-host interactions. Numerous studies have focused on analyses of the expression profiles of cellular miRNAs, but the expression patterns of Dicer, which is responsible for the generation of miRNAs, have only rarely been explored in Gallus gallus. We developed a duplex realtime reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) assay for the relative quantification of the mRNAs of Dicer and β-actin in G. gallus. To apply this method, the expression of Dicer in avian cells after infection with avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) was detected using our established duplex real-time RT-PCR. The duplex realtime RT-PCR assay is sufficiently sensitive, specific, accurate, reproducible, and cost-effective for the detection of Dicer in G. gallus. Furthermore, this study, for the first time, demonstrated that ALV-J can induce differential expression of Dicer mRNA in the ALV-J-infected cells.

This paper further studies the adaptive stabilization problem for a class of stochastic nonholonomic systems with time delays, unknown parameterization and control coefficients. By using input-state-scaling technique, backstepping recursive approach, and the parameter separation technique, we design an adaptive state-feedback controller under weaker conditions on the drift and diffusion terms. Then, by adopting the switching strategy to eliminate the phenomenon of uncontrollability, the proposed adaptive state-feedback controller can guarantee the states of the closed-loop system to be global boundedness in probability. Finally, the simulation result shows the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
