      • Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy is Associated with in Situ Breast Cancer Risk

        Background: The relationship between postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) and invasive breast cancer has been extensively investigated, but that with breast carcinoma in situ (BCIS) has received relatively little attention. The aim of our present study was to review and summarize the evidence provided by longitudinal studies on the association between postmenopausal HT use and BCIS risk. Methods: A comprehensive literature search for articles published up to May 2012 was performed. Prior to performing a meta-analysis, the studies were evaluated for publication bias and heterogeneity. Relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) values were calculated using 14 reports (8 case-control studies and 6 cohort studies), published between 1986 and 2012. Results: There was evidence of an association between ever postmenopausal estrogen use and BCIS based on a random-effects model (RR = 1.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01, 1.55). However, we found no strong evidence of an association between ever postmenopausal estrogen combined with progesterone use and BCIS using a randomeffects model (RR = 1.55, 95% CI = 0.95, 2.51). Furthermore, our analysis showed a strong association between "> 5 years duration" of estrogen or estrogen combined with progesterone use and BCIS. Furthermore, current use of any HT is associated with increased risk of BCIS in cohort studies. Additional well-designed large studies are now required to validate this association in different populations.

        Circ_0101622 governs the miR-1179/RAB23 pathway to promote the aggressive progression of thyroid cancer

        Background Numerous circular RNAs (circRNAs) are functionally investigated in human cancers. However, there are still a large number of circRNAs with unclear functions. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the role of circ_0101622 in thyroid cancer. The expression of circ_0101622, microRNA-1179 (miR-1179), and Ras-associated binding protein 23 (RAB23) was measured using quantitative real-time PCR method. The protein levels of E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and RAB23 were detected by western blot. For functional analyses, cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion were assessed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, flow cytometry assay, wound-healing assay, and Transwell assay, respectively. Glycolysis was assessed by glucose consumption and lactate production. The binding between miR-1179 and circ_0101622 or RAB23 was determined by dualluciferase reporter assay and RIP assay. Animal study was performed to verify the role of circ_0101622. Circ_0101622 showed high expression in thyroid cancer tissues and cells. Results Circ_0101622 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and glycolysis metabolism in vitro and blocked tumor growth in vivo. Mechanism analysis found that circ_0101622 functioned as miR-1179 sponge to release RAB23. Circ_0101622 knockdown inhibited cancer development by enriching miR-1179, and miR-1179 restoration inhibited cancer development by sequestering RAB23. Conclusion Circ_0101622 might act as an oncogenic driver to promote the malignant progression of thyroid cancer by mediating the miR-1179/RAB23 pathway.

        Recently there are many disasters caused by volcanic activities such as the eruptions in Tungurahua, Ecuador(2014) and Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland(2010). Therefore, it is required to prepare countermeasures for the disasters. This study analyzes the Baekdu Mountain area, where is the risky area because it is active volcano, based on the observed data and scientific methods in order to assess a risk, produce a hazard map and analyze a degree of risk caused by the volcano. Firstly, it is reviewed for the research about the Baekdu mountain volcanic eruption in 1215 (± 15 years) done by Liu Ruoxin. And the factors causing volcanic disaster, environmental effects, and vulnerability of Baekdu Mountain are assessed by the dataset, which includes the earthquake monitoring data, the volcanic deformation monitoring data, the volcanic fluid geochemical monitoring data, and the socio-economic statistics data. A hazard, especially caused by a volcano, distribution map for the Baekdu Mountain Area is produced by using the assessment results, and the map is used to establish the disaster risk index system which has the four phases. The first and second phases are very high risky area when the Baekdu Mountain erupts, and the third and fourth phases are less dangerous area. The map shows that the center of mountain has the first phase and the farther area from the center has the lower phase. Also, the western of Baekdu Mountain is more vulnerable to get the risk than the eastern when the factors causing volcanic disasters are equally applied. It seems to be caused by the lower stability of the environment and the higher vulnerability.

        Mixed Frequency Small Gain State Feedback Control with Application to Insulin Pumps

        This paper considers the state feedback control synthesis problem for linear continuous-time systems with small gain specifications in mixed frequency ranges. A new method for designing the state feedback controllers is developed in the framework of linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the available result is illustrated via an application to insulin pumps.

      • Serum Amyloid A is a Novel Prognostic Biomarker in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Purpose: To investigate the prognostic value of serum amyloid A (SAA) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing surgery. Materials and Methods: Preoperative serum samples of 328 patients with HCC who underwent curative resection and of 47 patients with benign liver lesion were assayed. Serum levels of SAA were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and its correlations with clinicopathological characteristics and survival were explored. Results: Levels of SAA were significantly higher in patients with HCC than those with benign liver lesion. There were strong correlations between preoperative serum SAA level and tumor size and more advanced BCLC stage. On univariate analysis, elevated SAA was associated with reduced disease-free survival and overall survival (p=0.001 and 0.03, respectively). Multivariate analyses showed that serum SAA level was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio 2.80, p=0.01). Conclusions: High SAA serum level is a novel biomarker for the prognosis of HCC patients.

        Intraday Pattern in Bid-Ask Spreads and Its Power-Law Relaxation for Chinese A-Share Stocks

        We use high-frequency data of 1364 Chinese A-share stocks traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange to investigate the intraday patterns in the bid-ask spreads. The daily periodicity in the spread time series is confirmed by using a Lomb analysis and the intraday bid-ask spreads are found to exhibit an L-shaped pattern with an idiosyncratic fine structure. The intraday spread of individual stocks relaxes as a power law within the first hour of the continuous double auction from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM with exponents βSHSE = 0.19 0.067 for the Shanghai market and βSZSE = 0.18 0.069 for the Shenzhen market. The power-law relaxation exponent β of individual stocks is roughly normally distributed. There is evidence showing that the accumulation of information widening the spread is an endogenous process.

      • Low Counts of γδ T Cells in Peritumoral Liver Tissue are Related to More Frequent Recurrence in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Curative Resection

        Objectives: TCR-gamma-delta+T cells (${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells) are non-conventional T lymphocytes that can recognize and eradicate tumor cells. Our previous studies showed that infiltration and function of ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells were substantially attenuated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, their prognostic value was not clarified. Methods: The association between ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells and the clinical outcomes was determined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in a HCC patient cohort (n = 342). Results:Immunohistochemistry showed decreased infiltration of ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells in tumoral tissues compared with paired peritumoral tissues. The counts of ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells in peritumoral tissues were negatively correlated with tumor size (P = 0.005). Survival analysis showed that the levels of peritumoral ${\gamma}{\delta}$T cells were related to both time to recurrence (TTR) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0.010 and P = 0.036, respectively) in univariate analysis, and related to TTR in multivariate analysis (P = 0.014, H.R. [95% CI] = 0.682 [0.502-0.927]). Furthermore, the level of peritumoral ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells showed independent prognostic value for TTR in Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage A patients (P = 0.038, H.R. [95% CI] = 0.727 [0.537-0.984]). However, tumoral ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells did not show independent prognostic value for either TTR or OS in HCC patients. Conclusions: Low counts of ${\gamma}{\delta}$ T cells in peritumoral liver tissue are related to a higher incidence of recurrence in HCC and can predict postoperative recurrence, especially in those with early-stage HCC.

        A Comparative Study on Ternary Low-Platinum Catalysts with Various Constructions for Oxygen Reduction and Methanol Oxidation Reactions

        Three types of ternary low-platinum nanocatalysts, alloy PdPtIr/C, core–shell PdPt@PtIr/C and Pd@PtIr/C, have been prepared, and their catalytic behaviors toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR)/oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are comparatively investigated via cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry analysis in an acidic medium. Through a two-step colloidal technique, the synthesized core–shell structured catalyst PtPd@PtIr/C with alloy core and alloy shell show the best catalytic activity toward MOR and the best poisoning tolerance. The alloy PdPtIr/C catalyst prepared via a one-step colloidal technique exhibits the best performance toward ORR among the three catalysts. All the three catalysts are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and other characterization techniques.

        공공서비스동기가 자원봉사활동에 미치는 영향 : 중국 대학생을 중심으로

        이 연구는 중국 대학생의 공공서비스동기와 자원봉사참여의 유의미한 관련성 여부를 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 기존 연구들을 바탕으로 하여 개념들 간의 이론적 관계가 가설화되었으며, 중국 충칭직할시에 소재하고 있는 주요 대학교 (충칭대학교, 충칭사범대학교, 충칭의과대학교)의 재학생들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문조사결과를 토대로 공공서비스동기와 자원봉사참여간의 통계적 상관관계를 회귀분석모델을 통해 분석하고 가설을 검증하였다. 통제요인으로는 인구사회학적 요인, 사회자본 요인, 종교 활동, 가족 내의 사회화과정을 포함하였다. 분석결과, 종교 활동, 공공서비스동기 요인(헌신)이 자원봉사활동에 대한 정(+)적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 이론적으로 공공서비스이론 연구의 발전에 일조할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 실무적으로는 자원봉사활동이 지속적으로 발전하고 이를 실시하는 데 있어서도 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다. This study pays attention to a recent growing trend of participation in volunteer activities among Chinese college students. It seeks to understand what factors can affect volunteer participation. Particularly, it focuses on public service motivation (PSM) and investigates empirically how PSM can influence volunteering. To examine, we conducted a survey questionnaires administered to students registered in three main universities (Chongqing University, Chongqing Normal University, and Chongqing Medical University) in Chongqing, China. Based on the survey data, this study constructed an OLS regression model to estimate the effect of PSM on volunteer participation. After controlling for factors such as demographic factors, social capital, religious activities and socialization processes in the family, the empirical result showed that PSM is partially significant in terms of affecting volunteer participation. A PSM dimension (sacrifice) is statically significant and the other dimensions (sympathy and civic duty) are not significant. In addition, religious activities have a statistically significant effect on volunteering.

        The discovery of long noncoding RNA (LncRNA) changes our view of transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression. With application of new research techniques such as high-throughput sequencing, the biological functions of LncRNAs are gradually becoming to be understood. Multiple studies have shown that LncRNAs serve as carcinogenic factors or tumor suppressors in breast cancer with abnormal expression, prompts the question of whether they have potential value in predicting the stages and survival rate of breast cancer patients, and also as therapeutic targets. Focusing on the latest research data, this review mainly summarizes the tumorigenic mechanisms of certain LncRNAs in breast cancer, in order to provide a theoretical basis for finding safer, more effective treatment of breast cancer at the LncRNA molecular level.
