On the Thick Translation of Finnegans Wake in the Chinese Version

        Wen Jun,Wang Bin,Zhang Wenhe 한국통역번역학회 2016 통역과 번역 Vol.18 No.3

James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (FW) was not translated into Chinese until 2012 partly because of the obscurity of Joyce’s language and partly of the big differences between graphic and alphabetic languages. In order to solve the problems, the translator Dai Congrong adopted some unique translation approaches such as citing the source text, juxtaposing several translations of one source word, and adding footnotes. These translational practices correspond to the idea of thick translation, which advocates situating the translation in a rich cultural and linguistic context by means of annotation or other measures. Based on their locations relative to the main body of the translation, thick translation can be classified into three types: textual, text-close and text-remote, with the latter two as the foci of the study. A case study of the Chinese translation of FW reveals that thick translation, as a feasible and effective strategy in translating classics, serves various functions, including the construction of a cultural “Other”, translator’s identity and literary history as well as facilitation of intercultural communication and research. It is also hoped that the current study sparks more academic interest and further research in FW in both literary and translation studies.

An Improved Discontinuous Deformation Analysis to Solve Both Shear and Tensile Failure Problems

Wenjun Gong,Jing Hu,Zhigang Tao 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.5

This paper is mainly aimed to present an improved DDA (discontinuous deformation analysis) that can deal well with both shear and tensile failure problems. Firstly, the shear mechanism of DDA is detailed investigated. The results show that when handling the frictional interface, the critical shear resistance can be accurately determined only if the penalty value is carefully selected, however, when handling the cohesive interface, the critical shear resistance is significantly underestimated. The inaccurate prediction is due to the inconsistent distribution of normal force and shear force between the two vertex-to-edge contacts in one edge-to-edge contact. Here an edge-to-edge treatment is introduced into DDA. Secondly, to moderately reflect the tensile failure process of rock masses, a two-phase constitutive model is introduced into the DDA with edge-to-edge treatment, and the improved DDA is obtained. Finally, the improved DDA is used to simulate the failure process of gypsum centrifuge model. The results show the improved DDA can deal well with rock failure problems by shear or tension failure.

Intercalation of Europium Inclusion Complex of β-Cyclodextrin into Layered Double Hydroxides Through Layer-By-Layer Assembly and Its Luminescent Properties

        Wenjun Zhang,Yi Chen,Yanlin Li,Sumin Guan,Yan Chen,Qian-Qian Yang,Lu Liu,Qing-Chen Xue,Yu-Cui Guang 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2017 NANO Vol.12 No.10

"In this work, organic–inorganic hybrid ultrathin transparent films (UTFs), produced by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of the europium inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin ( β-CD) and Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (MgAl–NO3–LDHs) nanosheets, are reported. UV-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy show orderly growth of the europium inclusion complex of β-CD/layered double hydroxide (EICC/LDH) films with an increasing number of deposition cycles. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy measurements indicate that the films feature periodic layered structures with uniform surface morphology. Moreover, when EICC is assembled with inorganic rigid LDH nanosheets, the lifetimes are prolonged due to the isolation effect, and the UTFs are transparent with high brightness, which indicate that these films could serve as new optical materials."

Efficiency Analysis of Port Companies in China Using DEA and the Malmquist Method

        Wenjun He,Hye-Min Ma,Gi-Tae Yeo 한국항해항만학회 2017 한국항해항만학회지 Vol.41 No.5

The efficiency of port operations is an important indicator of port development. Moreover, there is excess handling capacity in Chinese ports, which results in a slower speed of development. Under the detrimental environment of the international shipping market, it is necessary to improve the operation efficiency of ports for long-term development. This paper provides an assessment of the competitiveness of Chinese seaport companies using the Boston Consulting Group’s matrix, and efficiency measurements using a data envelopment analysis and the Malmquist method. This analysis showed that highly efficient companies reformed their development strategies, which should be a solution considered by less efficient companies, such as Shenzhen Yan Tian Port Holdings Co., Ltd.. Although, having high throughput should be reformed in the investment structure. This research will assist port companies in gaining effective operating experience, and governments in establishing strategic planning to enhance the efficiency of port development.

A large scale simulation of floe-ice fractures and validation against full-scale scenario

Wenjun Lu,Hans-Martin Heyn,Raed Lubbad,Sveinung Loset 대한조선학회 2018 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.10 No.3

While interacting with a sloping structure, an ice floe may fracture in different patterns. For example, it can be local bending failure or global splitting failure depending on the contact properties, geometry and confinement of the ice floe. Modelling these different fracture patterns as a natural outcome of numerical simulations is rather challenging. This is mainly because the effects of crack propagation, crack branching, multi fracturing modes and eventual fragmentation within a solid material are still questions to be answered by the on-going research in the Computational Mechanic community. In order to simulate the fracturing of ice floes with arbitrary geometries and confinement; and also to simulate the fracturing events at such a large scale yet with sufficient efficiency, we propose a semi-analytical/ empirical and semi-numerical approach; but with focus on the global splitting failure mode in this paper. The simulation method is validated against data we collected during the Oden Arctic Technology Research Cruise 2015 (OATRC2015). The data include: 1) camera images based on which we specify the exact geometry of ice floes before and after an impact and fracturing event; 2) IMU data based on which the global dynamic force encountered by the icebreaker is extracted for the impact event. It was found that this method presents reasonably accurate results and realistic fracturing patterns upon given ice floes.

      • The Role of TIP60 in Early Porcine Embryonic Development

        Wenjun Zhou,Jing Guo,Nam-Hyung Kim,Xiang-Shun Cui 한국동물생명공학회(구 한국동물번식학회) 2017 발생공학 국제심포지엄 및 학술대회 Vol.2017 No.10

The acetyltransferase TIP60 (also known as Kat5) is a member of the MYST family of histone acetyltransferases and was initially identified as a cellular protein. TIP60 acetylates histone and nonhistone proteins and is involved in diverse biological processes, including apoptosis, cell cycle, and DNA damage responses. In this study, a specific inhibitor of TIP60 was used to detect the function of TIP60 in porcine parthenogenetic embryos. The results showed that TIP60 inhibition impaired porcine parthenogenetic embryonic development. The mechanism of TIP60 was also determined. We found that the TIP60 inhibition impaired embryonic development by ROS induced DNA damage, as demonstrated by the number of γH2A in the nuclei. TIP60 inhibition triggered DNA damage through the regualetion of p53-p21 pathway and TIP60 played a role in DNA repair. TIP60 inhibition decreased the efficiency of DNA repair by regulating 53BP1-dependent repair after DNA damage. Inhibition of TIP60 also increased the adaptive response, autophagy, by modulating LC3. Therefore, TIP60 plays a role in early porcine parthenogenetic embryonic development by regulating DNA damage and repair.

Quantitative Analysis of Seismic Response of Rock Slopes Using Discontinuous Deformation Analysis - A Case Study

        Wenjun Gong,Yunsheng Wang,Yujie Wang,Yonghong Luo 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.12

For the prevention and mitigation of hazards, it is crucial to quantitatively analyze the seismic response of rock slopes. However, only a few studies have quantitatively analyzed the seismic response of rock slopes; these studies have considered topographic effects only and have neglected geological site effects, such as impedance contrasts and fractures, which are important factors affecting the seismic response of rock slopes, as revealed by multiple recent phenomena. Therefore, this study primarily aims to investigate the possibility of employing a numerical model for quantitatively analyzing the seismic response of rock slopes by considering the geological site effects. Herein, a discrete element method, i.e., discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA), was employed for the dynamic analyses, and a well-monitored rock slope, Mount Dong, was selected as the case study. In the proposed DDA model, horizontal and vertical ground motions were applied simultaneously. The different weathering degrees of the Mount Dong rock layers were considered to reflect the impedance contrasts, and the penalty value at the fractures was altered according to the stiffness for reflecting the fracture effects. Furthermore, a set of optimal boundary settings, especially for DDA, were applied to handle seismic dynamic problems. Results show that DDA can quantitatively reflect the seismic response of Mount Dong along a single direction, such as the horizontal direction, which is sufficient to satisfy engineering requirements. The peak ground acceleration amplification analyses indicate that: 1) a strong impedance contrast is more important than topographic effects for the seismic response of Mount Dong; and 2) in addition to the impedance of rock layers, widely spread fractures also play an important role in contributing to the seismic response anisotropy of rock slopes. Finally, spectral amplification analyses reveal that the responses of the inner and surface portion of Mount Dong are significant in a low- and high-frequency range, respectively.
