        MediaCloud: A New Paradigm of Multimedia Computing

        Multimedia computing has attracted considerable attention with the rapid growth in the development and application of multimedia technology. Current studies have attempted to support the increasing resource consumption and computational overhead caused by multimedia computing. In this paper, we propose MediaCloud, a new multimedia computing paradigm that integrates the concept of cloud computing in handling multimedia applications and services effectively and efficiently. MediaCloud faces the following key challenges: heterogeneity, scalability, and multimedia Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. To address the challenges above, first, a layered architecture of MediaCloud, which can provide scalable multimedia services, is presented. Then, MediaCloud technologies by which users can access multimedia services from different terminals anytime and anywhere with QoS provisioning are introduced. Finally, MediaCloud implementation and applications are presented, and media retrieval and delivery are adopted as case studies to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed MediaCloud design.

        Modeling of Assembly Deviation with Considering the Actual Working Condition

        Generally, it would be more realistic to consider that the components of an assembly are flexible typically undergo some deformations. In addition, with the mobility of the parts, there is normally a wear between the contact surfaces. Ignoring the dynamic working conditions with these deformations and wear could lead to an inaccurate assembly deviation and further affect the performance, reliability and service life of products. This paper proposes modeling of assembly deviation by considering the actual working conditions to obtain the time-variant assembly gap during the service time. First, the dimensional and geometric tolerances of the parts are simulated by Monte Carlo simulation, and the assembly deviation caused by the tolerances is obtained based on modified Unified Jacobian–Torsor model. Second, the deformation of the surfaces of the parts induced by mechanical and thermal loads are calculated by finite element analysis. Third, the wear depth between the contact surfaces is derived by conducting wear tests under the simulating working condition. By integrating the deformations and wear into tolerance analysis model, the final assembly deviation is constructed by considering the actual working conditions. Finally, the proposed model is applied to the blade bearing of controllable pitch propeller (CPP) for determining the effect of the actual working conditions on its service life.

        Three-Dimensional Prescribed-Time Impulsive Pinning Cooperative Guidance

        This paper studies the problem of multiple interceptors with intermittent communication cooperatively intercepting a stationary target. Given the difficulties in real-time online information transmission, a three-dimensional (3D) two-stage prescribed-time impulsive pinning cooperative guidance law (PTIPCGL) is proposed. It can achieve the simultaneous arrival of multiple interceptors based on the directed internal communication and impulsive pinning external communication. In the first stage, the PTIPCGL incorporates a time scaling function into the second-order impulsive pinning consensus to realize the desired convergence performance. Theoretically, the convergence time can be arbitrarily pre-specified and independent of tuning parameters. In the second stage, the switching occurs at the pre-specified convergence time, and the interceptors switch to pure proportional navigation (PPN) guidance with suitable initial conditions to achieve simultaneous arrival. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate that the PTIPCGL exhibits satisfactory effectiveness and robustness under intermittent communication.

      • Visual Tracking Based on Reversed Sparse Representation

        In this paper, we propose a fast and robust tracking method based on reversed sparse representation. Be different from other sparse representation based visual tracking methods, the target template is sparsely represented by the candidate particles which are gotten by particle filter. In order to improve the robustness of the method, we use a target template set. Meanwhile, a two level competition mechanism is also introduced. In the first level, each target template is sparsely represented and all the candidate particles compete with each other by a similarity calculation, which is based on sparse coefficients. Then, the winners construct a target candidate set. In the second level, all the target candidates in the target candidate set compete with each other and the one which is the most similar to the template set is considered as the target. In addition, a template set update strategy is proposed to adapt the appearance variations of the target. Experimental results on challenging benchmark video sequences demonstrate that the proposed tracking algorithm performs favorably against several state-of-the-art methods.

      • Wavelet Subspace Based Integrated Face Recognition Scheme

        In this paper, based on the study of the Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis (2DPCA), Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis (2DPCA) and fuzzy set theory, we propose a integrated face recognition algorithm based on wavelet subspace. This method can make good use of the advantages of each single method, and also can make up for the defect of each other. The comparison of the results of the different methods identification effect on the ORL、YALE and FERET face database show, the integrated method proposed in this paper improves the recognition rate, and it also reduces the training and classification time as well.

        A Novel Material Fluorescence Probe Based on Covalently Functionalized Graphene Oxide by Aminocoumarin for Detection of CN-

        Owing to the hazardness, the sensitive and selective detection of cyanide (CN-) in water or water-containing systems has still been a puzzle plaguing scientists all around the world. In this paper, a novel fluorescence probe based on covalently functionalized graphene oxide (GO) by aminocoumarin for highly selective detection of CN- in deionized water was prepared under the action of EDC/NHS. This probe bears aminocoumarin group as the recognition site and fluorophore, and its fluorescence quantum yield is increased by 0.07. Simultaneously, by loading on GO, the dispersibility, selectivity and reversibility were soundly improved, which facilitated the detection process. The fluorescence spectra showed that the probe has high selectivity and sensitivity for cyanide, and has potential application in real water.

      • Target Handoff with Appearance Model Inheriting and Learning

        We address the issue of continuous tracking of the target in an environment covered by multiple cameras. In such a scenario, target handoff is a key problem. In this paper, we propose a novel target handoff method based on appearance model inheriting and learning. The appearance model is initially learned by sparse representation using the tracking results in the first camera. The next camera inherits the appearance model for target handoff and updates it after getting the whole tracking results. Then, the appearance model is transferred to the following camera. By the appearance model inheriting and learning, the appearance model can describe the target more and more precisely, which will make the target handoff more accurately and effectively. We also demonstrate the performance of our method on several video surveillance sequences.

        Effect of Acupuncture Manipulations at LI4 or LI11 on Blood Flow and Skin Temperature

        Acupuncture induces physiological changes, and patients have reported warm or cool sensations with “Burning Fire” (BF) or “Penetrating Cool” (PC) manipulations. This study aimed to evaluate whether these techniques had distinct effects on skin temperature and blood flow and to examine whether skin temperature correlated with blood flow. The participants were 25 healthy volunteers, each receiving acupuncture manipulations on points LI4 and LI11 bilaterally. Skin temperatures and blood flow were recorded continuously on both arms. The study found that acupuncture significantly increased skin temperature on the needling arm by 0.3514°C on average, but decreased it on the contralateral arm by 0.2201°C on average. Blood flow decreased significantly in both arms during needling (−3.4% and −5.97% for the ipsilateral and the contralateral sides, respectively), but the changes in skin temperature did not correlate with the changes in blood flow. Furthermore, these changes were not significantly different between acupuncture techniques and acupuncture points. In conclusion, acupuncture changes local skin temperature and blood flow independent of the manipulation technique. Moreover, blood flow may not be affected by the increased temperature on the needling arm. These results help to verify traditional Chinese medicine concepts and may help in establishing standards for acupuncture treatments.
