<P>Under near-equilibrium solidification conditions, the Co-17.8 wt%Gd eutectic alloy forms rod-like eutectic microstructure of (αCo) solid solution and Co17Gd2 compound. When the solidification condition is far from the equilibrium, the rapid growth of nano-eutectic in Co-17.8 wt%Gd alloy ribbons is realized by the single-roller techniques. The average granular size (d) of nano-eutectic in the center of ribbons varies with the increase of wheel speed (V), d = 510.36-25.51 V+0.44 V2. XRD results of ribbons at different wheel speeds indicate that, with the rise of wheel speed, the main peak of Co17Gd2 compound becomes more and more notable, whereas the main peak of (αCo) solid solution tends to reduce. Along the length direction, the Co-17.8 wt%Gd alloy ribbons have the negative magnetostrictive strain. The magnetostrictive strain enhances with the increase of wheel speed. At the wheel speed of 40 m/s, the magnetostrictive coefficient of ribbons is measured to be - 733 ppm at the magnetic field of 6 kOe. The influence of the wheel speed and the magnetic field on the maanetostrictive coefficient is discussed.</P>

The extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been widely used to estimate the state-of-charge (SoC) of batteries over the past decade. Battery SoC estimation with the EKF is initialized without knowing the true value of the SoC. Thus, it requires a fast convergence rate to provide users with an accurate SoC value in the shortest time. Applying an adaptive rule into the EKF is an unfussy way to improve both the accuracy and convergence rate of SoC estimation. However, an adaptive rule requires additional calculations and consumes additional memory space to store the learning history. This paper applies Busse’s adaptive rule to improve the accuracy and convergence rate of EKF battery SoC estimation. Experimental data from a lithium titanate battery is applied to examine the battery SoC estimation with EKF, covariance-matching adaptive EKF (CM-AEKF), and Busse’s adaptive EKF (Busse-AEKF) algorithms. The findings showed that the Busse-AEKF method has the shortest convergence time with an accuracy that is comparable to that of the CM-AEKF method. After the SoC value is converged, the algorithm gives estimation accuracy of a 1.42% root-mean-square error (RMSE) and a 3.15% of maximum error. In addition, Busse’s AEKF does not require a large memory space to operate. Thus, it is a promising solution for battery SoC estimation.

The storage yard in the study is horizontal layout, in which one quay crane is served by several yard cranes and one vessel is served by several blocks during vessel operation. This study addresses various storage strategies for horizontal container lay yard layout. The storage strategies include the strategy for selecting blocks, reserving spaces for a group of containers in advance, and selecting yard stacks. The proposed strategies are tested by a simulation study.

Effects of Modafinil on Behavioral Learning and Hippocampal Synaptic Transmission in Rats

Purpose: Modafinil is a wake-promoting agent that has been proposed to improve cognitive performance at the preclinical and clinical levels. Since there is insufficient evidence for modafinil to be regarded as a cognitive enhancer, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic modafinil administration on behavioral learning in healthy adult rats. Methods: Y-maze training was used to assess learning performance, and the whole-cell patch clamp technique was used to assess synaptic transmission in pyramidal neurons of the hippocampal CA1 region of rats. Results: Intraperitoneal administration of modafinil at 200 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg significantly improved learning performance. Furthermore, perfusion with 1mM modafinil enhanced the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous postsynaptic currents and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons in hippocampal slices. However, the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons were inhibited by treatment with 1mM modafinil. Conclusions: These results indicate that modafinil improves learning and memory in rats possibly by enhancing glutamatergic excitatory synaptic transmission and inhibiting GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic) inhibitory synaptic transmission.

Traumatic optic neuropathy is an injury to the optic nerve that leads to vision loss. Autophagy is vital for cell survival and cell death in central nervous system injury, but the role of autophagy in traumatic optic nerve injury remains uncertain. Optic nerve crush is a robust model of traumatic optic nerve injury. p62 siRNA and rapamycin are autophagy inducers and have different neuroprotective effects in the central nervous system. In this study, p62 and rapamycin induced autophagy, but only p62 siRNA treatment provided a favorable protective effect in visual function and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival. Moreover, the number of macrophages at the optic nerve lesion site was lower in the p62- siRNA-treated group than in the other groups. p62 siRNA induced more M2 macrophage polarization than rapamycin did. Rapamycin inhibited both mTORC1 and mTORC2 activation, whereas p62 siRNA inhibited only mTORC1 activation and maintained mTORC2 and Akt activation. Inhibition of mTORC2-induced Akt activation resulted in blood–optic nerve barrier disruption. Combined treatment with rapamycin and the mTORC2 activator SC79 improved RGC survival. Overall, our findings suggest that mTORC2 activation after autophagy induction is necessary for the neuroprotection of RGCs in traumatic optic nerve injury and may lead to new clinical applications.
Reduced Autophagy in 5-Fluorouracil Resistant Colon Cancer Cells

We investigated the role of autophagy in SNUC5/5-FUR, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) resistant SNUC5 colon cancer cells. SNUC5/5-FUR cells exhibited low level of autophagy, as determined by light microscopy, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry following acridine orange staining, and the decreased level of GFP-LC3 puncta. In addition, expression of critical autophagic proteins such as Atg5, Beclin-1 and LC3-II and autophagic flux was diminished in SNUC5/5-FUR cells. Whereas production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was significantly elevated in SNUC5/5-FUR cells, treatment with the ROS inhibitor N-acetyl cysteine further reduced the level of autophagy. Taken together, these results indicate that decreased autophagy is linked to 5-FU resistance in SNUC5 colon cancer cells.
Behavior of reinforced concrete corbels

Test results of thirteen reinforced concrete corbels with shear span-to-depth ratio greater than unity are reported. The main variables studied were compressive strength of concrete, shear span-todepth ratio and parameter of vertical stirrups. The test results indicate that the shear strengths of corbels increase with an increase in compressive strength of concrete and parameter of vertical stirrups. The shear strengths of corbels also increase with a decrease in shear span-to-depth ratio. The smaller the shear span-to-depth ratio of corbel, the larger the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The higher the concrete strength of corbel, the higher the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The larger the parameter of vertical stirrups, the larger the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The softened strut-and-tie model for determining the shear strengths of reinforced concrete corbels is modified appropriately in this paper. The shear strengths predicted by the proposed model and the approach of ACI Code are compared with available test results. The comparison shows that the proposed model can predict more accurately the shear strengths of reinforced concrete corbels than the approach of ACI Code.
