Optimal Timing to Assess Drain Amylase Concentration after Elective Gastrectomy

Purpose: While the amylase concentration of the drainage fluid (dAmy) has been reported to be a predictor of postoperative pancreas-related complications (PPRC), the optimal timing for its measurement has not been fully investigated. Materials and Methods: The clinicopathological data of 387 patients who underwent elective gastrectomy for gastric cancer were reviewed. Laboratory data, including dAmy on postoperative days 1 (dAmy1) and 3 (dAmy3), and serum C-reactive protein (sCRP) concentrations on postoperative days 1 (sCRP1) and 3 (sCRP3) were compared between patients with PPRC and without PPRC. Results: Nineteen of the 387 patients (4.9%) developed PPRC. The optimal cutoff values of dAmy1, dAmy3, sCRP1, and sCRP3 were 1514 IU/L, 761 IU/L, 8.32 mg/dL, and 15.15 mg/dL, respectively. The area under the curve of dAmy1 was greater than that of dAmy3 (0.915 vs. 0.826), and that of sCRP3 was greater than that of sCRP1 (0.820 vs. 0.659). In the multivariate analysis, dAmy1 (P<0.001) and sCRP3 (P=0.004) were significant predictors of PPRC, while dAmy3 (P=0.069) and sCRP1 (P=0.831) were not. Thirteen (41.9%) of 31 patients with both dAmy1 ≥1,545 IU/L and sCRP3 ≥15.15 mg/dL had PPRC ≥Clavien-Dindo II. In contrast, among 260 patients with both dAmy1 <1,545 IU/L and sCRP3 <15.15 mg/dL, none developed PPRC. Conclusions: dAmy1 was more useful than dAmy3 in predicting PPRC. The combination of dAmy1 and sCRP3 may be a useful criterion for the removal of drains on postoperative day 3.
Red Emission from Eu-Implanted GaN

Eu ions were implanted into GaN epilayers on sapphire substrates. Sharp visible red emission lines due to inner 4f shell transitions for Eu3+ can be observed from the photoluminescence of Eu-implanted GaN. The 5D0 !7F2 transition produces the strongest red emission line. Minor lines are observed in the given spectral range. The lines at 546, 603, 624, and 667 nm are assigned to 5D1 !7F1 and 5D0 !7F1;2;3 transitions, respectively. These emission lines are little changed with varying temperature. Eu-implanted GaN can be a suitable material for application in red emission devices.

Photoluminescence of Er-implanted GaN

Visible green emission has been observed from Er(Erbium)-doped GaN epilayers. Various doses of Er ions were implanted in GaN epilayers by using ion implantation. The optical properties of Er-doped GaN were analyzed by using photoluminescence (PL). Sharp emission lines due to inner 4f shell transitions for Er3+ were observed in the PL spectrum of Er-implanted GaN. The emission spectrum consisted of two narrow green lines, 537 and 558 nm. The green emission lines were identied as Er3+ transitions from the 5H11=2 and the 4S3=2 levels to the 4I15=2 ground state. The stronger peaks in the 5 1014 cmက2 sample, together with the relatively higher intensity of the Er3+ luminescence in the lower doped sample, indicate that some damage remains in the 1 1015 cmက2 sample.
Centralized P2P Management System Based on File and Peer Reputation

In recent years, P2P file sharing systems have become one of the most popular applications in networks. However, because of the nature of the openness and anonymity of P2P applications, it is very hard to control peers that can join the system and also to trace the originating peers of shared files. Therefore, P2P systems have also become an avenue of attack and in practice a lot of malicious files are shared in P2P systems in addition to legitimate files. In order to manage P2P networks and prevent the malicious files from spreading, we propose a centralized P2P management system (C2MS) using the reputation of both file and peer. Some simulation results demonstrate that our proposed C2MS can work well even in serious attack situation.
Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Treatments for Traumatic Spinal Injuries due to Snowboarding

Study Design: Retrospective study. Purpose: To assess treatment outcomes of snowboarding-related spinal and spinal cord injuries. Overview of Literature: Snowboarding-related spinal or spinal cord injury have a great impact on social and sporting activities. Methods: A retrospective review of 19 cases of surgically treated snowboard-related injury was done. Analyzed parameters included site of injury, type of fracture, peri- and postoperative complications, pre- and postoperative neurological status, activities of daily living, and participation in sports activities at the final follow-up. Results: The major site of injury was the thoracolumbar junction caused by fracture-dislocation (13/19 cases). The remaining 6 cases had cervical spine injuries. Over 60% of the patients had Frankel A and B paralysis. All patients were surgically treated by posterior fusion with instrumentation. Five underwent additional anterior fusion. Surgical outcome was restoration of ambulatory capacity in 12 patients (63.2%). Ultimately, 15 patients (78.9%) could return to work. Patients with complete paralysis upon admission showed reduced ambulatory capacity compared to those with incomplete paralysis. None of the patients again participated in any sports activities, including snowboarding. Conclusions: Snowboarding-related spinal or spinal cord injury has a great impact on social as well as sports activities. It is necessary to enhance promotion of injury prevention emphasizing the snowboarders’ responsibility code.

(Zn,Mg)O (ZMO) thin films doped with Ga $(0\~0.03mol\%)$ in the target source were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on c-plane sapphire substrates at $500^{\circ}C$, and the effect of Ga contents on the properties of the electrical, optical and crystal properties of the deposited films was investigated. From X-ray diffraction patterns, ZMO film doped with $0.02 mol\%$ Ga showed crystal structure with c-axis preferred orientation, showing only the (0002) and (0004) diffraction peaks. In contrast, ZMO film doped with $Ga=0.03 mol\%$ showed a randomly oriented crystal structure. All the samples were highly transparent, showing the transmittance values of above $85\%$ in the visible region. For all the Ga doped ZMO films, the value of energy band gap was found to be about 3.5 eV, regardless of their Ga contents. From the Hall measurements, the resistivity and the carrier density for the ZMO film doped with $0.01 mol\%$ Ga were about $5\times10^{-4}\Omega-cm$ and $2\times10^{21}cm^{-3}$, respectively.
