AGEING IN THE UNITED STATES AT THE END OF THE CENTURY

The belief that America is a “young” nation is widely held by many individuals in the United States. Historically, individualism, self-reliance, and an orientation towards youth have been cherished values reflecting of our national heritage and tradition dating from the 18th through the mid-20th Century. However, America is no longer a “young” nation. Rather, we are an “aging” population, as we show in our analysis of demographic transitions reviewed in this paper. The phenomenon of “cultural (or structural) lag” is discussed in two different contexts: first-the context of the aging family; and second-the context of ethnic/racial minority groups. Finally, some of the relevant public policy responses to aging are described. We look at government programs in four major categories, namely, 1) income; 2) health care; 3) social services; and 4) housing.

농산물교역자유화에 따른 농업부문의 득실과 경제개방화에 따라 발생할 수 있는 사회적 비용을 최소화하는 방안을 분석했다. 한편 비농업부문과 균형을 이루면서 농업을 산업으로 육성시킬 수 있는 구조정책대안을 제시했다. 구조 조정 방향은 농업내부에 있어서 비교우위 원칙에 따라 농업생산을 전문화하고 농업생산 기술진보를 통해 생산성을 증대시키고 농산물의 질은 향상시키도록 해야한다. 또한 경영규모를 확대해 생산비를 절감시켜 저염한 농산물을 생산해야 할 것으로 분석되었다.
ERS-1 and CCRS C-SAR Data Integration for Look Direction Bias Correction using Wavelet Transform

Look direction bias in a single look SAR image can often be misinterpreted in the geological application of radar data. This paper investigates digital processing techniques for SAR image data integration and compensation of the SAR data look direction bias. The two important approaches for reducing look direction bias and integration of multiple SAR data sets are (1) principal component analysis (PCA), and (2) wavelet transform(WT) integration techniques. These two methods were investigated and tested with the ERS-l (VV-polarization) and CCRS*s airborne (HH-polarization) C-SAR image data sets recorded over the Sudbury test site, Canada. The PCA technique has been very effective for integration of more than two layers of digital image data. When there are only two sets of SAR data are available, the PCA technique requires at least one more set of auxiliary data for proper rendition of the fine surface features. The WT processing approach of SAR data integration utilizes the property which decomposes images into approximated image (low frequencies) characterizing the spatially large and relatively distinct structures, and detailed image (high frequencies) in which the information on detailed fine structures are preserved. The test results with the ERS-l and CCRS*s C-SAR data indicate that the new WT approach is more efficient and robust in enhancing the fine details of the multiple SAR images than the PCA approach.

Approximately 5% of breast cancer patients develop leptomeningeal metastases over the course of their disease. Though several treatments options are available for these patients, their prognosis is typically considered to be poor. We report a case of leptomeningeal failure after a patient underwent prior radiotherapy, radiosurgery, surgery, chemotherapy, and biologic therapy. This patient experienced a prolonged response after receiving bevacizumab and capecitabine. The literature currently contains several reports regarding the use of systemic therapy to manage leptomeningeal metastases from breast cancer, which we summarize. Finally, we review the relevant effects of the patient’s treatment modalities and provide a rationale for the mechanism that led to her prolonged response.

Background: Increased oxidative stress has been suggested as one of the underlying mechanisms in iodide excess-induced thy roid disease. Metallothioneins (MTs) are regarded as scavengers of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in oxidative stress. Our aim is to investigate the effects of propylthiouracil (PTU), a thyroid peroxidase inhibitor, perchlorate (KClO4), a competitive inhibitor of iodide transport, and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) on mitochondrial superoxide production instigated by high concentra tions of iodide in the thyroids of MT-I/II knockout (MT-I/II KO) mice. Methods: Eight-week-old 129S7/SvEvBrd-Mt1 tm1Bri Mt2tm1Bri/J (MT-I/II KO) mice and background-matched wild type (WT) mice were used. Results: By using a mitochondrial superoxide indicator (MitoSOX Red), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and methyl thia zolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay, we demonstrated that the decreased relative viability and increased LDH release and mitochon drial superoxide production induced by potassium iodide (100 μM) can be relieved by 300 μM PTU, 30 μM KClO4, or 10 U/L TSH in the thyroid cell suspensions of both MT-I/II KO and WT mice (P<0.05). Compared to the WT mice, a significant de crease in the relative viability along with a significant increase in LDH release and mitochondrial superoxide production were de tected in MT-I/II KO mice (P<0.05). Conclusion: We concluded that PTU, KClO4, or TSH relieved the mitochondrial oxidative stress induced by high concentrations of iodide in the thyroids of both MT-I/II KO and WT mice. MT-I/II showed antioxidant effects against high concentrations of io dide-induced mitochondrial superoxide production in the thyroid.
