Language Metaphoricity : Its Implications in SLA
Lopez, Beatriz Vera 대한언어학회 2002 언어학 Vol.10 No.1
Lopes, Beatriz Vera. 2001. Language Metephoricity: Its Implications in SLA. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 10(1), 135 155. Metaphoricity is discussed as a main feature of language processing that must be taken into account to assess: (i) Psycholinguistic trends intending to explain SLA, mainly that of connectionism or Parallel Distributed Processing, and kellerman's theory of prototypicality in SLA transference. (ii) Cognitive and metacognitive processes in teaming. (iii) Ways to enhance learner autonomy. A methodology for language and literature teaching is proposed, taking metaphors as minimal triggers of autonomous learning. Metaphors are considered in their heuristic and pragmatic dimension.
ASTROMETRIC OBSERVATION OF MIRA VARIABLES WITH VERA
NAKAGAWA, AKIHARU,OMODAKA, TOSHIHIRO,HANDA, TOSHIHIRO,KAMEZAKI, TATSUYA,PROJECT, VERA The Korean Astronomical Society 2015 天文學論叢 Vol.30 No.2
The calibration of the period luminosity relation (PLR) for Galactic Mira variables is one of the principle aims of the VERA project. We observe $H_2O$ maser emission at 22 GHz associated with Mira variables in order to determine their distances based on annual parallaxes. We conduct multi-epoch VLBI observations over 1-2 years with a typical interval of one month using VERA in order to obtain annual parallaxes with an accuracy of better than than 10%. Recently, the annnual parallax of T Lep was determined to be $3.06{\pm}0.04$ mas corresponding to a distance of $327{\pm}4pc$ (Nakagawa et al., 2014). The circumstellar distribution and kinematics of $H_2O$ masers was also revealed. With accurate distances to the sources, calibrations of K-band absolute magnitudes ($M_K$) can be improved compared to conventional studies. By compiling Mira variables whose distances were determined with astrometric VLBI, we obtained a PLR of $M_K=3.51logP+1.37{\pm}0.07$.

Red blood cell (RBC) deformability has become one of the important factors to assess blood and cardiovascular diseases. The interest on blood studies have promoted a development of various microfluidic devices that treat and analyse blood cells. Recet years, besides the RBC deformability assessment, these devices are often applied to cancer cell detection and isolation from the whole blood. The devices for cancer cell isolation rely mainly on size and deformability of the cells. However, the examination of deformability of the RBCs mixed with cancer cells is lacking. This study aims at determining the deformation index (DI) of the RBCs in contact with cancer cells using a hyperbolic microchannel which generates a strong extensional flow. The DIs of human healthy RBCs and human RBCs in contact with a tumor cell line (HCT-15, colon carcinoma) were compared by analyzing the flowing RBCs images captured by a high speed camera. The results reveal that the RBCs that were in contact with HCT-15 cells have lower deformability than the normal RBCs.
Internet of Things (IoT) Framework for Granting Trust among Objects
Vera Suryani,Selo Sulistyo,Widyawan Widyawan 한국정보처리학회 2017 Journal of information processing systems Vol.13 No.6
The concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) enables physical objects or things to be virtually accessible forboth consuming and providing services. Undue access from irresponsible activities becomes an interestingissue to address. Maintenance of data integrity and privacy of objects is important from the perspective ofsecurity. Privacy can be achieved through various techniques: password authentication, cryptography, and theuse of mathematical models to assess the level of security of other objects. Individual methods like these areless effective in increasing the security aspect. Comprehensive security schemes such as the use of frameworksare considered better, regardless of the framework model used, whether centralized, semi-centralized, ordistributed ones. In this paper, we propose a new semi-centralized security framework that aims to improveprivacy in IoT using the parameters of trust and reputation. A new algorithm to elect a reputationcoordinator, i.e., ConTrust Manager is proposed in this framework. This framework allows each object todetermine other objects that are considered trusted before the communication process is implemented. Evaluation of the proposed framework was done through simulation, which shows that the framework can beused as an alternative solution for improving security in the IoT.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture point PC6 (Neiguan) in controlling nausea during intraoral impression taking. This study was con- ducted in Piracicaba, Sa ˜o Paulo, Brazil. The sample consisted of 33 adult volunteers with nausea, who were randomly divided into control and study groups, and treated with non- penetrating sham acupuncture and real acupuncture, respectively, at acupoint PC6. The two groups had two maxillary impressions taken, one prior to acupuncture and the other after acupuncture. The nausea assessment was made using the visual analog scale, Gagging Severity Index (GSI), and Gagging Prevention Index. Volunteers’ expectation that nausea would be reduced through acupuncture was also assessed. For statistical analysis, we used the t test and the Spearman correlation (p < 0.05). When assessed by Gagging Severity Index/Gagging Prevention Index, nausea was reduced in the real acupuncture group (p < 0.01). In the visual analog scale assessment, similar reductions of nausea were noted in both groups (p > 0.05). No correlation existed between the expected and the actual reductions in nausea. Our results indicate that acupoint PC6 was effective for con- trolling nausea during the maxillary impression-taking procedure. Patients’ expectation did not influence the results.
Off-Label Prescription and How it is (Not) Regulated in China
Vera Lúcia C. Raposo 이화여자대학교 생명의료법연구소 2017 Asia Pacific Journal of Health Law & Ethics Vol.10 No.3
Off-label prescription—the use of a drug outside the scope of its marketing authorization (MA) and the content of its summary of product characteristics (SmPC)—is a medical practice spread all around the world, China being no exception. Several reasons, mostly related to financial strategies from pharmaceutical companies, can justify the decision of not requiring an MA for a certain drug use. The main reason is the purpose of having a profit without taking excessive risks, either economic or legal. This paper will define off-label prescription, discuss the various reasons leading to it, describe the general framework of this practice in Europe and in the United States and analyze off-label prescription in China, describe its regulation (actually, the lack of it) in the Chinese legal system and comment on the actual practice by Chinese health care providers. To conclude, the paper will sustain that a regulation for off-label prescription is essential to clarify for doctors the requirements of lawful off-label uses, and thus protect patients from injuries resulting from risky of-label prescriptions.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), recognized as the most common conditions of chronic orofacial pain, have a multifactorial etiology. Acupuncture can help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with these conditions, because it can rebalance the energy (Qi) circulating in the meridians. The aim of the study was to verify the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating the pain; mouth opening limitation, and energy circulating in the meridians of patients with TMD of muscular or mixed origin. This was a controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical trial conducted at the Piracicaba Dental School (FOP/Unicamp), in Piracicaba SP, Brazil. The Treatment Group received acupuncture with real penetration of the needle, and the Placebo Group received a sham treatment without needle penetration. The acupoints used were: ST6, ST7, SI18, GV20, GB20, BL10, and LI4, during treatment performed for four weekly sessions. The TMD and mouth opening were evaluated according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC). The measurements of the energy at the meridians were performed by the Ryodoraku method, before and after acupuncture in all of the sessions in both groups. The results showed no decrease in pain in the Treatment Group when compared with the Placebo Group (p Z 0.2261). There was no increase in the oral opening limit in the Treatment Group compared with the Placebo Group (p > 0.05). Regarding the energy levels, after acupuncture, there was a decrease in Yang energy in all sessions (p < 0.05), in both groups, however, only real acupuncture was effective in maintaining the Yin energy average throughout the four sessions, with significant difference between groups (p Z 0.0198). In conclusion, volunteers with TMD presented a pattern of energy deficiency and the most prevalent imbalance patterns identified were in the meridians coupled to the kidney and bladder, and in the Shao Yin (heart/kidney) and Shao Yang (triple energizer/gall bladder) energetic planes. The acupuncture points used were equally effective in reducing pain in both groups; increasing the unassisted mouth opening limitation without pain in the Treatment Group, and were also effective in preserving the Yin energy in the Treatment Group. The Yang energy decreased equally in both groups.
