Novel computational approaches characterizing knee physiotherapy

Kim, Wangdo,Veloso, Antonio P.,Araujo, Duarte,Kohles, Sean S. Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2014 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.1 No.1

A knee joint's longevity depends on the proper integration of structural components in an axial alignment. If just one of the components is abnormally off-axis, the biomechanical system fails, resulting in arthritis. The complexity of various failures in the knee joint has led orthopedic surgeons to select total knee replacement as a primary treatment. In many cases, this means sacrificing much of an other-wise normal joint. Here, we review novel computational approaches to describe knee physiotherapy by introducing a new dimension of foot loading to the knee axis alignment producing an improved functional status of the patient. New physiotherapeutic applications are then possible by aligning foot loading with the functional axis of the knee joint during the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis.

        이진모(Rhee, Jinmo),페드로벨로소(Veloso, Pedro) 대한건축학회 2023 대한건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.43 No.2

This paper explores the optimization of apartment building layouts using five different meta-heuristic optimization algorithms: Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Simple Evolutionary Algorithm (SEA), Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution (SADE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC). The study aims to compare and analyze the performance of each algorithm in solving the apartment building layout problem. The optimization process involves placing apartment buildings on a given site while considering design constraints such as floor area ratio, building separation distance, and building height. The objective function is formulated to minimize the number of buildings violating these constraints. The results show that SGA outperforms the other algorithms, achieving the lowest error rate and producing better layouts. SADE follows with a relatively slower but effective optimization performance. SEA and ABC exhibit similar patterns, while PSO demonstrates the least satisfactory results, indicating the need for further optimization. The study provides valuable insights into the characteristics of each algorithm in apartment building layout optimization and can serve as a basis for future research in this field.

        Happiness Leisure Experiences in Consumption

Paula RODRIGUES,Ana SOUSA,Mó,nica VELOSO 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.3

The Personal sense of uniqueness (PSU) is positively associated with subjective well-being and has been recently shown its correlation with happiness, influencing consumer’s experience behavior. However, the effects of hedonic and eudaimonic experience on conspicuous and inconspicuous (consumer’s need for status and inner fulfillment) are unknown. The purpose of this research is to address a gap existing in the literature by testing the effects of PSU on hedonic and eudaimonic leisure experiences and how happiness leisure experiences effects conspicuous and inconspicuous consumption. The relationships hypothesized in the model are tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and bootstrapping procedure. Data was gathered using a self-administrated survey, answered by 200 consumers based on consumers’ leisure experiences. The findings of this study suggest that (i) PSU positively and significantly influence hedonic and eudaimonic happiness; (ii) the effect of PSU on eudaimonic happiness is higher than in hedonic happiness; (iii) eudaimonic happiness positively and significantly influence conspicuous and inconspicuous consumption; and (iv) hedonic happiness negatively and significantly influence conspicuous and inconspicuous consumption. This study helps fill a gap in the literature by introducing and testing the effect of hedonic and eudaimonic leisure experiences and the relationship between these constructs and PSU and (in) conspicuous consumption.

Clinical safety and efficacy of a novel marine source of the long -chain omega-3 fatty acids

        Joung-Hyun Park,Kathy Musa-Veloso,Ho-Seok Ji 한국해양바이오학회 2022 한국해양바이오학회지 Vol.14 No.1

Squid is a sustainable source of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids. This study aims to assess the safety and triglyceride-lowering efficacy of refined oil derived from the squid(Todarodes pacificus) viscera. Male and female participants with elevated fasting serum lipids (i.e., total cholesterol of ≥5.2 mmol/L or fasting serum triglyceride of ≥1.65 mmol/L) were randomly allocated to the control (n = 52) or squid oil group (n = 52), and participants in the latter group were instructed to consume 3 g of squid oil daily for 60 days. None of the subjects reported adverse events associated with the consumption of squid oil. Baseline clinical chemistry and hematological parameter values and those toward the end of the treatment period were similar, and all values were within the normal range. Fasting cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the control and squid oil groups were similar; however, toward the end of the 60 day study period, these levels significantly reduced in the squid oil group relative to those in the control group (P< 0.01). However, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol remained unchanged in both groups. Thus, it can be inferred that squid oil is a safe source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and has beneficial effects on the blood lipid levels. This is the first clinical study on squid oil usage, and suggests that it could be a sustainable source of omega 3 fatty acids.

This research proposes an alternative representation of apartment building mass for developing an automation tool of apartment complex layout design. An apartment building mass is a collection of residential units with required facilities and a constituent of an apartment complex. The shape of mass changes according to the configuration of the unit plans and building codes. Layout design problem is determining appropriate positions and angles by the shape variables such as in-between distance, amount of solar radiation, and angle preferences. By reviewing the precedents of computational representation of the mass, this research will address their limitations in complex layout automation and proposes a new representation which potentially responds to design feedback system in the automation of laying out the complex.

Biomechanical behavior of CAD/CAM cobalt-chromium and zirconia full-arch fixed prostheses

Barbin, Thais,Silva, Leticia Del Rio,Veloso, Daniele Valente,Borges, Guilherme Almeida,Presotto, Anna Gabriella Camacho,Barao, Valentim Adelino Ricardo,Groppo, Francisco Carlos,Mesquita, Marcelo Ferra The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2020 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.12 No.6

PURPOSE. To verify the influence of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) implant-supported prostheses manufactured with cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) and zirconia (Zr), and whether ceramic application, spark erosion, and simulation of masticatory cycles modify biomechanical parameters (marginal fit, screw-loosening torque, and strain) on the implant-supported system. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten full-arch fixed frameworks were manufactured by a CAD/CAM milling system with Co-Cr and Zr (n=5/group). The marginal fit between the abutment and frameworks was measured as stated by single-screw test. Screw-loosening torque evaluated screw stability, and strain analysis was explored on the implant-supported system. All analyses were performed at 3 distinct times: after framework manufacturing; after ceramic application in both materials' frameworks; and after the spark erosion in Co-Cr frameworks. Afterward, stability analysis was re-evaluated after 106 mechanical cycles (2 Hz/150-N) for both materials. Statistical analyses were performed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α=.05). RESULTS. No difference between the two materials was found for marginal fit, screwloosening torque, and strain after framework manufacturing (P>.05). Ceramic application did not affect the variables (P>.05). Spark erosion optimized marginal fit and strain medians for Co-Cr frameworks (P<.05). Screw-loosening torque was significantly reduced by masticatory simulation (P<.05) regardless of the framework materials. CONCLUSION. Co-Cr and Zr frameworks presented similar biomechanical behavior. Ceramic application had no effect on the biomechanical behavior of either material. Spark erosion was an effective technique to improve Co-Cr biomechanical behavior on the implant-supported system. Screw-loosening torque was reduced for both materials after masticatory simulation.

Potential of Whole Pequi (Caryocar spp.) Fruit—Pulp, Almond, Oil, and Shell—as a Medicinal Food

Nara Rubia Rodrigues do Nascimento-Silva,Maria Margareth Veloso Naves 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.9

Pequi (Caryocar) pulp, the most consumed component of pequi fruit, is one of the richest Brazilian carotenoid sources, and the most important carotenoid food source native to the Cerrado. However, there are considerable differences among pequi species regarding total carotenoids content and carotenoids profile. Caryocar brasiliense Camb. pulp presents higher content of total carotenoids than Caryocar villosum (Aubl.) Pers. Regarding the carotenoids profile, few studies are available in the literature, mainly with C. brasiliense. Pequi pulp also has high contents of lipids, dietary fiber, zinc, and magnesium, and is source of calcium and polyphenols. Pequi almond presents high energy, lipid, protein, dietary fiber, and ash contents. Pequi oil (pulp and almond) has high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and relatively high contents of saturated fatty acids, mainly palmitic. Pequi shell (exocarp and external mesocarp) is the largest component of the fruit and a solid residue of the pequi processing, which is rich in dietary fibers, including soluble fibers, and phenolic compounds, mostly gallic acid, ellagic acid, and quercetin. Pulp oil is the pequi byproduct most investigated in in vivo studies. Research with pequi pulp oil in animal models has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, antigenotoxic, and anticarcinogenic effects. In humans, there are evidences supporting anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and antigenotoxic effects. Studies on carotenoids profile of pequi pulp in different fruit species are recommended, and in vivo studies are necessary to better explore the potential health benefits of pequi fruit components, mainly the pequi pulp and shell.

Antimicrobial Activity of Benzophenones and Extracts from the Fruits of Garcinia brasiliensis

        Naldoni, F.J.,Claudino, A.L.R.,Cruz, J.W. Jr,Chavasco, J.K.,Silva, P.M. Faria e,Veloso, M.P.,Santos, M.H. Dos The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.2

The pericarp and seeds from fruits of Garcinia brasiliensis were subjected to extraction with hexane and ethanol. The pericarp hexane extract (PHE) and seed ethanol extract (SEE) were purified by silica gel column chromatography, which permitted isolation of the prenylated benzophenones 7-epiclusianone (1) and guttiferone-A (2), respectively. The antimicrobial activity of PHE, SEE, and compounds 1 and 2 were evaluated against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus cereus cultures. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration were established. The substances presented activity against S. aureus and B. cereus as follows: PHE, $4.0\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $2.4\;{\mu}g/mL$; SEE, $10.0\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $12.6\;{\mu}g/mL$; 7-epiclusianone, $1.2\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.6\;{\mu}g/mL$; and guttiferone-A, $2.4\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $2.4\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The direct relationship between the lipophilic character of the structure and activity in Gram-positive bacteria was specifically observed. Therefore these extracts and prenylated benzophenones represent an interesting topic for further studies and open possibilities for an alternative control of diseases associated with Gram-positive bacteria.

Does vitamin blends supplementation affect the animal performance, carcass traits, and nutrient digestibility of young Nellore finishing bulls?

Dhones Rodrigues de Andrade,Flavia Adriane de Sales Silva,Jardeson de Souza Pinheiro,Julia Travassos da Silva,Nathalia Veloso Tropia,Leticia Artuzo Godoi,Rizielly Saraiva Reis Vilela,Fernando Alerrand Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.12

Objective: This study was realized to evaluate the effects of supplementation with blends of water and fat-soluble vitamins on animal performance and carcass traits of young Nellore bulls. Methods: Forty-three Nellore bulls, with an initial weight of 261±27.3 kg and a mean age of 8±1.0 months, were used. Five animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment (reference group), to determine the initial empty body weight of the bulls that remained in the experiment. The remaining 38 bulls were fed ad libitum and distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2×2 factorial scheme, with or without supplementation of water-soluble (B-blend+ or B-blend-) and fat-soluble (ADE+ or ADE-) vitamin blends. Diets were isonitrogenous (120 g of crude protein/kg dry matter [DM] of total mixed ration) and consisted of a roughage:concentrate rate of 30:70 based on total DM of diet. The experiment lasted 170 days, with 30 days of adaptation and 140 days for data collection. At the beginning and end of the experimental period, the bulls were weighed to determine the average daily gain. To estimate the apparent digestibility of nutrients and microbial efficiency, spot collections of feces and urine were performed for five consecutive days. Results: DM, ashes, organic matter, crude protein, ethereal extract, neutral detergent fiber corrected for residual ash and residual nitrogenous, and N intake and apparent digestibility were not influenced by vitamin supplementation, but total digestible nutrients intake and non-fibrous carbohydrates digestibility were influenced by B complex vitamin supplementation. Nitrogen balance, microbial efficiency, and performance data were not influenced (p>0.05) by vitamin supplementation. Conclusion: Vitamin supplementation (a blend of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins or their combinations) does not influence the animal performance and carcass traits of young Nellore bulls.

Are home-based exercises effective to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive adults? A systematic review

Gabriel Dias Rodrigues,Ligia Soares Lima,Nicole Cristine Simões da Silva,Paula Gomes Lopes Telles,Teresa Mell da Mota Silva Rocha,Victor Quintella de Aragão Porto,Viviane Veloso Cardoso,Pedro Paulo da 대한고혈압학회 2022 Clinical Hypertension Vol.28 No.-

Sedentarism and chronic non-communicable diseases have been a worldwide health problem that is drastically exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic social impacts. Home-based exercises are widely encouraged during social isolation to counterbalance the physical inactive impacts. Although, in the context of hypertension, are home-based exercises effective in blood pressure controlling? Our objective is to conduct a systematic review of high-quality controlled trials comparing the possible effects of different types of home-based exercises in hypertensive patients. The literature search was carried out in three scientific databases: Medline, Europe PMC, and Lilacs. Articles were included following three criteria: analyzing the effect of home-based exercise programs on blood pressure in treated and untreated hypertensive patients; exercises must perform at home and on the frequency, intensity, time, and type (FITT) principle, and the articles were published in English. From the qualitative analysis of 27 original trials screened through 451 identified studies, the main results are the following: 1) both endurance, isometric strength, and respiratory home-based exercise programs were efficient to decrease blood pressure in hypertensive patients; 2) differences in methodological approaches regarding FITT components, distinct blood pressure values at baseline and specific underlying mechanisms must be considered as a potential bias of each home-based interventions. In conclusion, endurance, isometric strength, and breathing home-based programs seems to be effective to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients. However, further randomized controlled trials and mechanistic studies must be performing to guide evidence-based recommendations of home-based exercises as antihypertensive therapy.
