Dolichos biflorus Linn attenuate progression of renal damage in alloxan- induced diabetic rats

GU Chidrewar,VS Mane,MM Ghaisas,AD Deshpande 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2010 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.10 No.2

Dolichos biflorus Linn. (Fabaceae), commonly known as Horse gram is a medicinal plant, used in folk medicine for treating kidney stones and diabetes mellitus. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of daily oral feeding of various doses of methanolic extract of Dolichos biflorus seeds (DB) for 42 days on blood glucose concentrations and kidney functions in Alloxan-diabetic rats. Plasma glucose levels, body weight, serum creatinine, and urinary albumin levels were monitored on 15 th , 29 th , 43 rd day. Renal hypertrophy was assessed as the ratio between the kidney weight and body weight of the rats. Plasma glucose concentrations in Alloxan-diabetic rats were significantly reduced by the administration of DB (350 mg/kg) and DB (700 mg/kg) on day 15 and onwards (P < 0.01). After 15 days of Alloxan administration urinary albumin levels (UAE) were over 5 fold higher in diabetic controls as compared to normal controls. Treatment with DB significantly prevented the rise in UAE levels from day 15 to 43 in comparison to diabetic controls (P < 0.01). Renal hypertrophy was significantly higher in diabetic controls as compared to non-diabetic controls. Treatments with DB (350 mg/kg) and DB (700 mg/kg) significantly prevented renal hypertrophy (P < 0.01) as compared to diabetic controls. DB (175 mg/kg) failed to modify renal hypertrophy. Thus the present study indicates that methanolic extract of Dolichos biflorus may be useful in management of hyperglycemia and kidney functions in Alloxan-diabetic rats.

Antihyperglycemic and lipid lowering effect of Tectona grandis in alloxan induced diabetic rats

        Ghaisas MM,Navghare VV,Takawale AR,Zope VS,Tanwar MB,Phanse MA 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2010 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.10 No.2

In India, Tectona grandis is traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and lipid disorder. In the present study, the antihyperglycemic and lipid lowering effect of ethanolic extract of bark of Tectona grandis (TG) was evaluated using alloxan induced diabetes in rats. Alloxan was given at the dose of 140 mg/kg, i.p. After induction of diabetes, TG was administered for 42 days p. o. and simultaneously different biochemical parameters like plasma glucose, liver glycogen content, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were estimated. Diabetic control showed significant increase (P < 0.01) in plasma glucose, serum triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and significant decrease (P < 0.01) in serum HDL-cholesterol and liver glycogen content. Treatment with TG showed significant reduction (P < 0.01) in plasma glucose when compared with diabetic control. The elevated levels of serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced (P < 0.01) by TG. TG treatment for 42 days showed significant decrease in serum LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.01) and significant increase in serum HDL-cholesterol level (P < 0.01). Moreover, diabetic control there was significant decrease in liver glycogen content which was significantly increased (P < 0.05) by treatment with TG. Hence, from the result obtained in the present study it can be concluded that Tectona grandis has the potential to treat diabetes condition and associated lipid disorder.

Peri-Parturient Nematode Egg Rise in Indonesian Ewes

        Batubara, A.,Dorny, P.,Pandey, VS.,Romjali, E.,Feldman, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1997 Animal Bioscience Vol.10 No.3

Studies were designed to study the peri-parturient rise in strongyle faecal egg counts (FEC) in ewes grazing in a rubber plantation in North Sumatra, Indonesia. In three consecutive lambing seasons strongyle FEC of peri-parturient ewes and dry ewes were monitored from 2 to 3 weeks before lambing until 7 to 9 weeks post lambing to measure the magnitude and duration of the peri-parturient rise. A significant rise in FEC was observed during the post-parturient period in two of the three studies. FEC increased in the three studies from lambing day, and were elevated until 5 to 9 weeks following lambing. Lactating ewes shed on average 3 times more eggs than dry ewes. Lactating ewes were therefore considered as an important source of pasture infection. These findings are discussed in relation to the epidemiology and control of gastrointestinal nematodes in the humid tropics.

      • Prevalence of Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption among Fishermen in Udupi Taluk, Karnataka, India: a Cross-Sectional Study

Rane, Prasad Pramod,Narayanan, Prakash,Binu, VS,Unnikrishnan, Bhaskaran Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Background: Stress associated with fishing is known to trigger consumption of alcohol and tobacco among fishermen. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption among fishermen in Udupi Taluk in the state of Karnataka, India, and to study associations with health status and job stress. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted among 825 fishermen in Udupi Taluk of Karnataka between January-June 2015, using a two stage cluster sampling procedure. Associations between variables of interest were assessed using multivariable analysis and logistic regression models. Results: The prevalences of consumption of tobacco, alcohol and either of these substances were 64.2%, 45.6% and 86.9% respectively. There was a positive association between alcohol and any form of tobacco consumption with income but none with respondent's job stress and health status. Conclusions: Our study concluded that fishermen with poor health status are seen more among tobacco and alcohol users.

      • Salivary Her2/neu Levels in Differentiation of Oral Premalignant Disorders and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas

        Varun, Chopra,Dineshkumar, Thayalan,Jayant, VS,Rameshkumar, Annasamy,Rajkumar, Krishnan,Rajashree, Padmanaban,Mathew, Jacob,Arunvignesh, Rajendran K Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.14

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is thought to develop from precancerous dysplastic lesions through multistep processes of carcinogenesis involving activation of oncogenes and loss of tumor suppressor genes. The human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her-2/neu [erbB-2]), a cell membrane glycoprotein, is a growth factor receptor that has receptor tyrosine kinase activity. Her2/neu activation plays a central role in cell proliferation and survival. It has been shown that overexpression of Her2/neu increases the rate of cell division and growth, leading to precancerous changes. The aim of the present study was to compare the serum and salivary Her2/neu levels between cases with premalignant and malignant oral lesions. Materials and Methods: Fasting blood samples and unstimulated saliva by passive drooling were collected from three groups of healthy control (n=20), premalignant disorder (PMD) (n=20) and OSCC (n=25) subjects. The HER2 extracellular domain (HER2 ECD) levels were measured using ELISA. Results: The levels of serum Her2/neu showed no significant differences between any of the groups but on the other hand salivary Her2/neu levels were found to be significantly (p<0.05) higher when compared between control (median 68.7 pg/ml, range: 21.5 - 75.8) and OSCC (median 145.6 pg/ml, range: 45.1-191.1). A similar trend was observed when comparing between PMD (median 43.3, range: 22.1 -94.7) and OSCC with a statistical significance of p<0.05. Conclusions: Our study provided evidence of increased salivary Her2/neu in OSCC when compared to PMD and control which was not the case for serum levels. This suggests that probably Her2/neu is not highly amplified as in breast cancer so as to be reflected in serum. Since saliva is in local vicinity of the OSCC, even a mild increase might be mirrored. On the whole, this study proposes Her2/neu as marker for distinguishing premalignant and malignant conditions.

Selective aerobic-oxidation of glycerol to lactic acid over ruthenium-vanadium bimetallic catalysts

Hanumanth Reddy Pemmana,Prince Kumar Barnwal,Ramagopal VS Uppaluri,Nageswara Rao Peela 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.124 No.-

Ongoing trends to increase biodiesel production translates into enhanced surplus glycerol production, driving the need to develop value-added products, such as lactic acid, from glycerol. The present workis devoted to synthesizing Ru-V bimetallic and monometallic catalysts supported on activated carbonand testing them to produce lactic acid from glycerol through selective aerobic oxidation. The synthesizedcatalysts were thoroughly characterized to obtain morphological and structural properties, elementalcomposition, and surface area. The Ru-V2O5/AC (Ru-V/AC) bimetallic catalysts demonstrated superiorperformance to monometallic Ru and V catalysts, exhibiting a synergistic effect. The Ru-V/AC bimetalliccatalyst containing 1.5 wt% Ru and 0.5 wt% V exhibited the best catalytic performance with a lactic acidyield of 75.5% at 98.7% glycerol conversion under mild operating conditions (1 NaOH/glycerol molar ratio,4400 glycerol/metal molar ratio, 473 K temperature, 5 Bar air pressure and 3 h reaction time). The Ru-V/AC bimetallic catalyst showed good stability during the reaction with only a marginal loss in activitywhen reused for four consecutive cycles, suggesting that this catalyst can be recycled multiple times.
