        Effect of Buffalo Follicular Fluid Alone and in Combination with PMSG and M199 on in vitro Buffalo Oocyte Maturation

        The effect of replacement of in vitro maturation medium completely with the buffalo follicular fluid (buFF) on in vitro oocyte maturation of buffalo oocytes was studied. 5 to 8 buffalo cumulus oocyte complexes were cultured in a single drop with each of the eight media studied i.e., M199+steer serum (10% v/v), M199+steer serum (10% v/v)+PMSG, M199+buFF (10% v/v), M199+buFF (10% v/v)+PMSG, M199+buFF (50% v/v), M199+buFF (50% v/v)+ PMSG, buFF (100%) and buFF+PMSG at $39^{\circ}C$ and 5% $CO_2$ in air for 24 h. Supplementation of M199 with Steer serum alone resulted in IVM rate of 35% only. When the above medium was supplemented with PMSG, the maturation rate rallied to 82%. Significant increase in the maturation rates were observed when M199 was supplemented with increasing levels of buFF. A further increase in the maturation rate was also obtained when PMSG was incorporated into the medium of M199 supplemented with buFF. The rate of maturation was to the tune of 91% when oocytes were matured in buFF alone which was increased non significantly on the addition of PMSG. Highest maturation rate (97%) obtained with M199+buFF (50%v/v)+PMSG did not differ significantly from that obtained by either M199+buFF (10%v/v)+PMSG or buFF+PMSG. It is suggested that buFF alone without any supplementation can form the effective in vitro maturation medium for buffalo oocytes.

        Fast response of sprayed vanadium pentoxide (V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>) nanorods towards nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) gas detection

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanorods have been successfully spray deposited at optimized substrate temperature of 400°C onto the glass substrates using vanadium trichloride (VCl<SUB>3</SUB>) solution of different concentrations. The effect of solution concentration on the physicochemical and NO<SUB>2</SUB> gas sensing properties of sprayed V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanorods is studied at different operating temperatures and gas concentrations. The XRD study reveals the formation of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> having an orthorhombic symmetry. The FE-SEM micrographs show the nanorods-like morphology of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>. The AFM micrographs exhibit a well covered granular surface topography. For direct allowed transition, the band gap energy values are found to be decreased from 2.45eV to 2.42eV. The nanorods deposited with 30mM solution concentration shows the maximum response of 24.2% for 100ppm NO<SUB>2</SUB> gas concentration at an operating temperature of 200°C with response and recovery times of 13s and 140s, respectively.         Seasonal and geographical toxicity of Indoxacarb against Helicoverpa armigera and influence of different host plants against Indoxacarb in India, 2005–2007

        Indoxacarb, an oxadiazine insecticide, was evaluated for its effectiveness against Helicoverpa armigera collected from selected locations in India. Determination of Indoxacarb efficacy was done using a log-dose probit (LDP) bioassay against third instars collected from cotton (Gossypium arborium) fields near Akola, India. Monthly levels of toxicity of Indoxacarb were determined from July 2005 to March 2007. The maximum tolerance level of Indoxacarb was reported for the Amaravati strain (5.09 p.p.m.) and the minimum tolerance level for the Fatehbad strain (0.22 p.p.m.). Seasonal monitoring of Indoxacarb toxicity revealed an increased trend in tolerance from July 2005 to February 2006, which decreased from March 2006. The LC50 of Indoxacarb was 2.71 p.p.m. in July 2005 and 17.14 p.p.m. in February 2006. During 2006–007, the LC50 was 3.84 p.p.m. at the start of the season and in March 2007 it was 13.51 p.p.m. The minimum LC50 of Indoxacarb was reported for H. armigera larvae fed on Legasca spp. (1.62 p.p.m.) and the maximum LC50 was reported for H. armigera reared on chickpea (Cicer arietium) (8.45 p.p.m.). LC50 of 2.73 and 4.56 p.p.m. were reported for H. armigera fed on cotton (Gossypium arborium) and pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), respectively.

      • OGLE-2011-BLG-0265Lb: A JOVIAN MICROLENSING PLANET ORBITING AN M DWARF

        <P>We report the discovery of a Jupiter-mass planet orbiting an M-dwarf star that gave rise to the microlensing event OGLE-2011-BLG-0265. Such a system is very rare among known planetary systems and thus the discovery is important for theoretical studies of planetary formation and evolution. High-cadence temporal coverage of the planetary signal, combined with extended observations throughout the event, allows us to accurately model the observed light curve. However, the final microlensing solution remains degenerate, yielding two possible configurations of the planet and the host star. In the case of the preferred solution, the mass of the planet is M-p = 0.9 +/- 0.3 M-J, and the planet is orbiting a star with a mass M = 0.22 +/- 0.06 M-circle dot. The second possible configuration (2 sigma away) consists of a planet with M-p = 0.6 +/- 0.3M(J) and host star with M = 0.14 +/- 0.06M(circle dot). The system is located in the Galactic disk 3-4 kpc toward the Galactic bulge. In both cases, with an orbit size of 1.5-2.0 AU, the planet is a 'cold Jupiter'-located well beyond the 'snow line' of the host star. Currently available data make the secure selection of the correct solution difficult, but there are prospects for lifting the degeneracy with additional follow-up observations in the future, when the lens and source star separate.</P>

      • Search for Λc+→ϕpπ0 and branching fraction measurement of Λc+→K−π+pπ0

        <P>We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay Lambda(+)(c) -> pi p(0) in e(+) e(-) collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 fb(-1). The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e(+) e(-) asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the (4S) and (5S) resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Lambda(+)(c) -> phi p(0)) < 15.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level. The contribution of nonresonant Lambda(+)(c) -> K+ K- p pi(0) decays is found to be consistent with zero, and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(Lambda(+)(c) ->. K+ K- p pi(0))(NR) < 6.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level. We also search for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay P-s(+) -> phi p. We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of B(Lambda(+)(c) -> P-s(+) pi(0)) x B(P-s(+) -> phi p) < 8.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level. Finally, we measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay Lambda(+)(c) -> K- pi(+) p pi(0); the result is B(Lambda(+)(c) -> K- pi(+) p pi(0)) = (4.42 +/- 0.05(stat)+/- 0.12(syst)+/- 0.16(norm))%, which is the most precise measurement to date.</P>

      • Binder-free novel Cu<sub>4</sub>SnS<sub>4</sub> electrode for high-performance supercapacitors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this work, for the first time, we report the direct coating of ternary chalcogenide-based nanostructured Cu<SUB>4</SUB>SnS<SUB>4</SUB> (CTS) thin film electrodes for the energy storage application. The phase purity, composition, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of the synthesized electrode are validated through comprehensive characterization techniques. In the supercapacitive application, the CTS electrode delivers an excellent performance with the maximum specific capacitance of 704 F/g, an energy density of 27.77 Wh/kg and a power density of 7.14 kW/kg in 1 M NaOH electrolyte solution. The intrinsic electrode properties such as the electronic conductivity, crystal structure and film hydrophilicity are found to be influential parameters for the obtained high performance and are studied in detail. Furthermore, the solid-state supercapacitive device fabricated using CTS electrodes and polymer gel electrolyte (PVA/NaOH) in a symmetric configuration, demonstrated the highest specific capacitance of 34.9 F/g with an energy density of 2.4 Wh/kg, a power density of 0.291 kW/kg and more than 89.9% capacitive retention.         Superior selectivity and enhanced response characteristics of palladium sensitized vanadium pentoxide nanorods for detection of nitrogen dioxide gas

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Vanadium pentoxide (V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>) nanorods have been deposited onto the glass substrates by spraying 75ml of 30mM vanadium trichloride (VCl<SUB>3</SUB>) solution at optimized substrate temperature of 400°C. The XRD study confirms the formation of orthorhombic crystal structure of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanorods. The FE-SEM micrograph shows the nanorods-like morphology of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>. The presence of palladium (Pd) in the Pd-sensitized V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanorods is confirmed using EDAX study. The gas sensing measurements show that the Pd-sensitized V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> sensing material is an outstanding candidate for nitrogen dioxide (NO<SUB>2</SUB>) gas detection. Obtained results demonstrate that the Pd-sensitized V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanorods show the superior selectivity for NO<SUB>2</SUB> gas in comparison with other gases such as NH<SUB>3</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>S, CO, CO<SUB>2</SUB> and SO<SUB>2</SUB> at an operating temperature of 200°C. It shows the 75% response for 100ppm NO<SUB>2</SUB> gas concentration with response and recovery times of 22s and 126s, respectively. Finally, the gas sensing mechanism based on chemisorption process is proposed to illustrate how Pd nanoparticles affect the gas sensing characteristics (response and response-recovery times).</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Directly comparing GW150914 with numerical solutions of Einstein’s equations for binary black hole coalescence

        <P>We compare GW150914 directly to simulations of coalescing binary black holes in full general relativity, including several performed specifically to reproduce this event. Our calculations go beyond existing semianalytic models, because for all simulations-including sources with two independent, precessing spins - we perform comparisons which account for all the spin-weighted quadrupolar modes, and separately which account for all the quadrupolar and octopolar modes. Consistent with the posterior distributions reported by Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016)] (at the 90% credible level), we find the data are compatible with a wide range of nonprecessing and precessing simulations. Follow-up simulations performed using previously estimated binary parameters most resemble the data, even when all quadrupolar and octopolar modes are included. Comparisons including only the quadrupolar modes constrain the total redshifted mass M-z epsilon [64 M-circle dot - 82 M-circle dot], mass ratio 1/q = m(2)/m(1) epsilon [0.6; 1], and effective aligned spin chi(eff) epsilon [-0.3, 0.2] where chi(eff) = (S-1/m(1)+S-2/m(2)). (L) over cap /M. Including both quadrupolar and octopolar modes, we find the mass ratio is even more tightly constrained. Even accounting for precession, simulations with extreme mass ratios and effective spins are highly inconsistent with the data, at any mass. Several nonprecessing and precessing simulations with similar mass ratio and chi(eff) are consistent with the data. Though correlated, the components' spins (both in magnitude and directions) are not significantly constrained by the data: the data is consistent with simulations with component spin magnitudes a(1,2) up to at least 0.8, with random orientations. Further detailed follow-up calculations are needed to determine if the data contain a weak imprint from transverse (precessing) spins. For nonprecessing binaries, interpolating between simulations, we reconstruct a posterior distribution consistent with previous results. The final black hole's redshifted mass is consistent with M-f,M-z in the range 64.0 M-circle dot - 73.5 M-circle dot and the final black hole's dimensionless spin parameter is consistent with a(f) = 0.62-0.73. As our approach invokes no intermediate approximations to general relativity and can strongly reject binaries whose radiation is inconsistent with the data, our analysis provides a valuable complement to Abbott et al.</P>

        Implantable Thin-film Porous Microelectrode Array (P-MEA) for Electrical Stimulation of Engineered Cardiac Tissues

        We have designed, fabricated, and validated a novel porous, multielectrode array (P-MEA) device capable of low-voltage electrical stimulation of engineered cardiac tissues (ECTs). The primary advantage of this device is the ability to successfully function at a very low voltage thus minimizing any undesirable oxidative by-products in the culture environment or cell injury. Major features of our P-MEA include dimensions of 10 mm width and 82 mm length, four arms to allow movement of the individual pads within ECTs, each embedded electrode arm incorporates eight 100 μm×200 μm rectangular pores surrounding a 950 μm×340 μm exposed electrode, large pads on either side of the porous embedded device to function as current return electrodes, suture holes to aid in vivo suturing and stabilization, and an eight electrode connector pads. Average thickness of the Ni/Au electrodes was 20 nm of nickel and 400 nm of old, an average electrode film thickness of 0.4 μm, and a double polyimide layer thickness of 16 μm. Electrode resistance ranged from 69.45 Ω to 78.52 Ω. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the P-MEA operates in the 0.01 V to 1.0 V range with favorable charge transfer characteristics. Proof of principle experiments confirmed the ability of the P-MEA to effectively embed within ECT and electricallystimulate ECT during chronic, in vitro culture. Histology imaging shows that the embedding of the device has no adverse effects on the ECT and the cardiomyocytes are aligned within the tissue. Experiments are ongoing to evaluate the role of electrical stimulation on the maturation and function of ECTs.         Ingestive Behavior of Heifers Supplemented with Glycerin in Substitution of Corn on Brachiaria brizantha Pasture

        The objective was to evaluate the ingestive behavior of crossbred heifers finished on a Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture receiving four levels of glycerin in their supplementation. Thirty-six crossbred heifers with average initial weight of $264.83{\pm}3.83kg$ and 20 months of age were distributed into a completely randomized design with four treatments and nine replications: control (0%), 4.82%, 10.12%, and 15.56% glycerin in the dry matter. The grazing time reduced linearly (p<0.05), whereas the time spent on activities like rumination, idleness, trough and total chewing time were quadratically affected (p<0.05). Bite rate and number of bites/day were quadratically influenced (p<0.05). The number of bites/swallowed cud and the number of bites/minute, however, increased linearly (p<0.05). Although the time spent on each cud and number of chews per cud were not affected (p>0.05).The number of rumination periods reduced linearly (p<0.05), whereas the number of grazing, idle and trough periods, and the times per grazing, idle, rumination and trough periods were quadratically affected (p<0.05). The feed and rumination efficiencies of the dry matter, non-fibrous carbohydrates, pasture dry matter and concentrate were quadratically affected (p>0.05) whereas the feed efficiency of neutral detergent fiber reduced linearly (p<0.05). Addition of glycerin in substitution of corn in supplements for animals managed on pastures does not influenced feed intake, but reduces the grazing time and increases the idle time. The supplementation also improves feed and rumination efficiencies.
