      • Comparison of transverse dental changes induced by the palatally applied Frog appliance and buccally applied Karad’s integrated distalizing system

        Fatma Deniz Uzuner,Emine Kaygisiz,Fatih Unver,Tuba Tortop 대한치과교정학회 2016 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.46 No.2

Objective: To compare the transverse dental changes induced by the palatally applied Frog appliance and buccally applied Karad’s integrated distalizing system(KIDS). Methods: We evaluated the pre- and post distalization orthodontic models of 39 patients, including 19 treated using the Frog appliance, which is palatally positioned (Frog group), and 20 treated using KIDS, which is buccally positioned (KIDS group). Changes in intermolar and interpremolar distances and the amount of maxillary premolar and molar rotation were evaluated on model photocopies. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for statistical evaluations. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Significant distopalatal rotation of premolars and distobuccal rotation of molars were observed in Frog group (p < 0.05), while significant distopalatal rotation of molars (p < 0.05), with no significant changes in premolars, was observed in KIDS group. The amount of second premolar and first molar rotation was significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, expansion in the region of the first molars and second premolars was significantly greater in KIDS group than in Frog group (p < 0.001 for both). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the type and amount of first molar rotation and expansion vary with the design of the distalization appliance used.

Decrease trends of ultimate loads of eccentrically loaded model strip footings close to a slope

        Cure, Evrim,Sadoglu, Erol,Turker, Emel,Uzuner, Bayram Ali Techno-Press 2014 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.6 No.5

A series of bearing capacity tests was conducted with eccentrically loaded model surface and shallow strip footings resting close to a slope to investigate behavior of such footings (ultimate loads, failure surfaces, load-displacement curves, rotation of footing, etc.). Ultimate loads of footing close to slope decreased with increasing eccentricity for both surface and shallow footings. Failure surfaces were not symmetrical, primary failure surfaces occurred on the eccentricity side (the slope side) and secondary failure surfaces occurred on the other side. Lengths of failure surfaces decreased with increasing eccentricity. Footings always rotated towards eccentricity side a few degrees. For eccentrically loaded footing, decrease in ultimate load with increasing eccentricity is roughly in agreement with Customary Analysis.

Micro-CT evaluation of the removal of root fillings using rotary and reciprocating systems supplemented by XP-Endo Finisher, the Self-Adjusting File, or Er,Cr:YSGG laser

        Kiraz Gülsen,Kaya Bulem Üreyen,Ocak Mert,Uzuner Muhammet Bora,Çelik Hakan Hamdi 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.4

Objectives This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a single-file reciprocating system (WaveOne Gold, WOG) and a multi-file rotary system (ProTaper Universal Retreatment, PTUR) in removing canal filling from severely curved canals and to evaluate the possible adjunctive effects of XP-Endo Finisher (XPF), the Self-Adjusting File (SAF), and an erbium, chromium: yttrium, scandium, gallium garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser using micro-computed tomography (μCT). Materials and Methods Sixty-six curved mandibular molars were divided into 2 groups based on the retreatment technique and then into 3 based on the supplementary method. The residual filling volumes and root canals were evaluated with μCT before and after retreatment, and after the supplementary steps. The data were statistically analyzed with the t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, analysis of covariance, and factorial analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Results PTUR and WOG showed no significant difference in removing filling materials (p > 0.05). The supplementary techniques were significantly more effective than reciprocating or rotary systems only (p < 0.01). The supplementary steps showed no significant differences in canal filling removal effectiveness (p > 0.05), but XPF showed less dentin reduction than the SAF and Er,Cr:YSGG laser (p < 0.01). Conclusions The supplementary methods significantly decreased the volume of residual filling materials. XPF caused minimal changes in root canal volume and might be preferred for retreatment in curved root canals. Supplementary approaches after retreatment procedures may improve root canal cleanliness.

Is platelet-rich plasma improves the anastomotic healing in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with oxaliplatin: an experimental rat study

        Omer Faruk Buk,Sonmez Ocak,Bugra Genc,Bahattin Avcı,Hatice Olger Uzuner 대한외과학회 2020 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.98 No.2

Purpose: Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a novel treatment option for peritoneal surface malignancies. Due to cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents, anastomosis healing can be impaired and lead to leakage rates higher than conventional intestinal surgery. In this experimental study, we aimed to investigate the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on colonic anastomosis in rats that received HIPEC with oxaliplatin. Methods: Thirty rats were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was determined as control group and hyperthermic saline perfusion was performed after colon anastomosis. In group 2, colon anastomosis then hyperthermic oxaliplatin perfusion was performed. In the last group, the colonic anastomosis was enhanced by PRP gel and then hyperthermic oxaliplatin perfusion was performed. All the rats were reoperated on postoperative day 7 and anastomotic bursting pressure values were recorded. Tissue samples were taken for hydroxyproline assay and histopathological examination. Results: Control group had higher anastomotic bursting pressure value than group 2 and group 3 (P < 0.001). There were significant differences in anastomotic bursting pressure between groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.001). Group 2 had significantly lower hydroxyproline levels than group 3 and control group (P < 0.001). Histopathological examination revealed that PRP application reduced inflammatory response. Conclusion: PRP application on colonic anastomosis improves anastomotic healing and can reduce anastomosis related complications and stoma creation; though further clinical studies are needed.

3D micro-CT analysis of void formations and push-out bonding strength of resin cements used for fiber post cementation

İsmail Hakkı Uzun,Meral Arslan Malkoç,Ali Keleş,Ayşe Tuba Öğreten 대한치과보철학회 2016 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.8 No.2

PURPOSE To investigate the void parameters within the resin cements used for fiber post cementation by micro-CT (µCT) and regional push-out bonding strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-one, single and round shaped roots were enlarged with a low-speed drill following by endodontic treatment. The roots were divided into three groups (n=7) and fiber posts were cemented with Maxcem Elite, Multilink N and Superbond C&B resin cements. Specimens were scanned using µCT scanner at resolution of 13.7 µm. The number, area, and volume of voids between dentin and post were evaluated. A method of analysis based on the post segmentation was used, and coronal, middle and apical thirds considered separately. After the µCT analysis, roots were embedded in epoxy resin and sectioned into 2 mm thick slices (63 sections in total). Push-out testing was performed with universal testing device at 0.5 mm/min cross-head speed. Data were analyzed with Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests (α=.05). RESULTS Overall, significant differences between the resin cements and the post level were observed in the void number, area, and volume (P<.05). Super-Bond C&B showed the most void formation (44.86 ± 22.71). Multilink N showed the least void surface (3.51 ± 2.24 mm2) and volume (0.01 ± 0.01 mm3). Regional push-out bond strength of the cements was not different (P>.05). CONCLUSION µCT proved to be a powerful non-destructive 3D analysis tool for visualizing the void parameters. Multilink N had the lowest void parameters. When efficiency of all cements was evaluated, direct relationship between the post region and push-out bonding strength was not observed.

Evaluation Expression of the Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 Apoptotic Genes in Schizophrenia Patients

Ebubekir Dirican(Ebubekir Dirican ),Halil Özcan(Halil Özcan ),Sevgi Karabulut Uzunçakmak(Sevgi Karabulut Uzunçakmak ),Uğur Takım(Uğur Takım ) 대한정신약물학회 2023 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.21 No.1

Objective: Apoptosis is programmed cell death that occurs by several pathways. Caspase-3 is induced by active caspase-9 via the intrinsic pathway. The aim of this research was to explore the expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in schizophrenia patients and healthy samples. Methods: RNA was isolated from the peripheral blood of 39 schizophrenia patients’ and healthy samples. After cDNA synthesis, real time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to analyse caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression. The severity of psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale for schizophrenia (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impressions (CGI). Results: The expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 genes was higher in schizophrenia patients than in healthy samples (p = 0.012, p = 0.002, respectively). The increase in caspase-3 gene expression was significant with being male, smoking and with a duration of less than 6 years (p = 0.047, p = 0.049, p = 0.034, respectively). On the other hand, the increase in caspase-9 gene expression was significant in patients who is smoke, have children, and are under 33 years old (p = 0.040, p = 0.043, p = 0.045, respectively). A significant positive correlation was detected between the caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression (r = 0.3218, p = 0.049). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that caspase-3 and caspase-9 gene expression may activate cell death mechanisms by intrinsic apoptotic genes. Furthermore, caspase-3 and caspase-9 may play essential roles in different ways in schizophrenia. Hence there is a need to further study the apoptotic mechanism with expanded patient populations.

Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Necati Uzun(Necati Uzun ),Mehmet Akif Akıncı(Mehmet Akif Akıncı ),Hayrullah Alp(Hayrullah Alp ) 대한정신약물학회 2023 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.21 No.1

Objective: The aim of this case-controlled study is to evaluate chronic inflammation, subclinical atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease risk in children and adolescents with ADHD. Methods: A total of 51 medication-free children and adolescents with ADHD and 51 healthy controls were included in this study. K-SADS-PL was used to determine the diagnosis of ADHD and other psychiatric disorders. Conners’ Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short Form and the Conners’ Teacher Rating Scale-Revised Short Form severity of ADHD was used to evaluate severity of ADHD. In order to evaluate subclinical atherosclerosis, common carotid intima media thickness (IMT), epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EAT), and periaortic adipose tissue thickness (PAT) were assessed as well as clinical parameters. Results: The IMT (0.037 ± 0.005 cm vs. 0.026 ± 0.003 cm), EAT (0.472 ± 0.076 cm vs. 0.355 ± 0.051 cm), and PAT (0.135 ± 0.016 cm vs. 0.118 ± 0.009 cm) measurements were significantly higher in the ADHD group than in the control group. Additionally, partial correlation analyses revealed that a positive correlation was observed between IMT and EAT, and PAT measurements separately. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that, body mass index (BMI) positively predicted IMT. Also, age and BMI positively predicted the EAT levels of the subjects with ADHD. Conclusion: Our results suggest that children and adolescents with ADHD have a risk for cardiovascular disease. For this reason, subclinical atherosclerosis should be taken into consideration in the follow-up and treatment of ADHD for cardiovascular disease risk.

Reliability of Corroded Steel Members Subjected to Elastic Lateral Torsional Buckling

Uzun Ertugrul Turker,Engin Aktaş 한국강구조학회 2021 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.21 No.4

Structural steel members are subjected to corrosion due to environmental condition. As a result, there is decreasing in the cross-section properties of the member. This causes diff erent stability problems and reduction in the load carrying capacity of members. Then, the probability of failure, P f increases due to corrosion. The need arises to determine expected level of safety for such members and systems. Besides, reliability of the steel structure is also eff ected by the structural stability problems that result decreasing in the resistance. Lateral torsional buckling is one of the most encountered problems in steel members and aff ected by the critical moment which is a function of lateral and torsional stiff ness. Critical moment depends on the material properties, boundary conditions, unbraced length, load pattern, and the member’s cross section. Under the corrosion, it is inevitable to observe changing in some of properties. In this study, a damage model to determine the reliability of a corroded I-shape steel member under linear moment gradient is developed considering corrosion exposure time. Uniform and varying thickness loss models are considered to show the corrosion eff ect. Infl uence of environmental condition on the load carrying capacity of the members is considered and their eff ects on member design is evaluated. As a result, it is concluded that load carrying capacity of steel members degrades and safety of them adversely eff ected. With presented formulas, it is ensured that the load carrying capacity and reliability indices of the steel members can be calculated practically under the examined situations

      • Free vibration analysis Silicon nanowires surrounded by elastic matrix by nonlocal finite element method

        Uzun, Busra,Civalek, Omer Techno-Press 2019 Advances in nano research Vol.7 No.2

Higher-order theories are very important to investigate the mechanical properties and behaviors of nanoscale structures. In this study, a free vibration behavior of SiNW resting on elastic foundation is investigated via Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory. Silicon Nanowire (SiNW) is modeled as simply supported both ends and clamped-free Euler-Bernoulli beam. Pasternak two-parameter elastic foundation model is used as foundation. Finite element formulation is obtained nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. First, shape function of the Euler-Bernoulli beam is gained and then Galerkin weighted residual method is applied to the governing equations to obtain the stiffness and mass matrices including the foundation parameters and small scale parameter. Frequency values of SiNW is examined according to foundation and small scale parameters and the results are given by tables and graphs. The effects of small scale parameter, boundary conditions, foundation parameters on frequencies are investigated.
