Does minimally invasive canal preparation provide higher fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth? A systematic review of in vitro studies

        Usta Sıla Nur,Silva Emmanuel João Nogueira Leal,Falakaloğlu Seda,Gündoğar Mustafa 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.4

This systematic review aimed to investigate whether minimally invasive root canal preparation ensures higher fracture resistance compared to conventional root canal preparation in endodontically treated teeth (ETT). A comprehensive search strategy was conducted on the “PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus” databases, alongside reference and hand searches, with language restrictions applied. Two independent reviews selected pertinent laboratory studies that explored the effect of minimally invasive root canal preparation on fracture resistance, in comparison to larger preparation counterparts. The quality of the studies was assessed, and the risk of bias was categorized as low, moderate, or high. The electronic search yielded a total of 1,767 articles. After applying eligibility criteria, 8 studies were included. Given the low methodological quality of these studies and the large variability of fracture resistance values, the impact of reduced apical size and/or taper on the fracture resistance of the ETT can be considered uncertain. This systematic review could not reveal sufficient evidence regarding the effect of minimally invasive preparation on increasing fracture resistance of ETT, primarily due to the inherent limitations of the studies and the moderate risk of bias.

      • Nurses' Perspective on Positive Attitudes to Cancer Patients in Turkey: A Qualitative Study

Usta, Yasemin Yildirim,Demir, Yurdanur,Yagmuroglu, Huriye Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the meaning of "positive attitude" for medical surgical nurses in caring for cancer patients. Methods: A qualitative method was used in this qualitative descriptive study with data from nurses who had volunteered to participate in an in-depth interview that was conducted between January and February 2012. A total of 10 nurses in general medical and surgical wards of a district hospital were interviewed. Results: The study used three broad themes to describe this multifaceted construct: showing empathy, seeing positively and behaving positively. The nurses were aware of their attitudes towards being positive with cancer patients and its significance in support for cancer patients. Conclusions: The findings of this study can serve as a platform upon which educational and other support programmes can be developed in order to meet the needs of those general nurses working with cancer patients. Future studies are recommended to examine nurses' beliefs about cancer that are thought to affect positive attitudes toward cancer patients.

Anthracenedicarboximide-based semiconductors for air-stable, <i>n</i>-channel organic thin-film transistors: materials design, synthesis, and structural characterization

        Usta, Hakan,Kim, Choongik,Wang, Zhiming,Lu, Shaofeng,Huang, Hui,Facchetti, Antonio,Marks, Tobin J. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012 Journal of materials chemistry Vol.22 No.10

<P>A family of six <I>n</I>-channel organic semiconductors (<B>1–6</B>) based on the <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-dialkyl-2,3:6,7-anthracenedicarboximide (ADI) core was synthesized and characterized. These new semiconductors are functionalized with <I>n</I>-octyl (-<I>n</I>-C8H17), 1<I>H</I>,1<I>H</I>-perfluorobutyl (-<I>n</I>-CH2C3F7), cyano (–CN), and bromo (–Br) substituents, which results in wide HOMO and LUMO energy variations (∼1 eV) but negligible optical absorbance (<I>λ</I>max = 418–436 nm) in the visible region of the solar spectrum. Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) were fabricated <I>via</I> semiconductor vapor-deposition, and the resulting devices exhibit exclusively electron transport with good carrier mobilities (<I>μ</I>e) of 10−3 to 0.06 cm2 V−1 s−1. Within this semiconductor family, cyano core-substitution plays a critical role in properly tuning the LUMO energy to enable good electron transport in ambient conditions while maintaining a low level of ambient doping (<I>i.e.</I>, low <I>I</I>off). Core-cyanated ADIs <B>3</B> and <B>6</B> exhibit air-stable TFT device operation with electron mobilities up to 0.04 cm2 V−1 s−1 in air. Very high current on/off ratios of >107 are measured with positive threshold voltages (<I>V</I>th = 5–15 V) and low off currents (<I>I</I>off = 10−9 to 10−12 A). Single-crystal structures of <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-1<I>H</I>,1<I>H</I>-perfluorobutyl ADIs <B>5</B> and <B>6</B> exhibit slipped-stack cofacial crystal packing with close π–π stacking distances of ∼3.2 Å. Additionally, close intermolecular interactions between imide-carbonyl oxygen and anthracene core-hydrogen are identified, which lead to the assembly of highly planar lamellar layers. Analysis of the air-stability of <B>1–6</B> thin films suggests that air-stability is mainly controlled by the LUMO energetics, and an electrochemical threshold of <I>E</I>red1 = −0.3 to −0.4 V is estimated to stabilize <I>n</I>-channel transport in this family of materials.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A new family of six air-stable <I>n</I>-channel organic semiconductors based on the <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-dialkyl-2,3:6,7-anthracenedicarboximide core has been synthesized and fully characterized. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1jm14713g'> </P>

      • Importance of Social Support in Cancer Patients

Usta, Yasemin Yildirim Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.8

Social support is regarded as a complex construct which has long been suggested to have direct and buffering effects on patients' wellbeing and emotional adjustment to cancer. Cross-sectional and prospective studies show a positive association between perceived social support and psychological adjustment following cancer treatment. Research findings suggest that the evidence for the relationship between social support and cancer progression is sufficiently strong. This report points out the importance of social support in cancer and provides recommendations for health care professionals.

      • High Electron Mobility in [1]Benzothieno[3,2-<i>b</i>][1]benzothiophene-Based Field-Effect Transistors: Toward n-Type BTBTs

        Usta, Hakan,Kim, Dojeon,Ozdemir, Resul,Zorlu, Yunus,Kim, Sanghyo,Ruiz Delgado, M. Carmen,Harbuzaru, Alexandra,Kim, Seonhyoung,Demirel, Gö,khan,Hong, Jongin,Ha, Young-Geun,Cho, Kilwon,Facchetti, American Chemical Society 2019 Chemistry of materials Vol.31 No.14

<P>The first example of an n-type [1]benzothieno[3,2-<I>b</I>][1]benzothiophene (BTBT)-based semiconductor, <B>D(Ph</B><B>F</B><B>CO)-BTBT</B>, has been realized via a two-step transition-metal-free process without using chromatographic purification. Physicochemical and optoelectronic characterizations of the new semiconductor were performed in detail, and the crystal structure was accessed. The new molecule exhibits a large optical band gap (∼2.9 eV) and highly stabilized (Δ<I>E</I>LUMO = 1.54 eV)/π-delocalized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) mainly comprising the BTBT π-core and in-plane carbonyl units. The effect of out-of-plane twisted (64°) pentafluorophenyl groups on LUMO stabilization is found to be minimal. Polycrystalline <B>D(Ph</B><B>F</B><B>CO)-BTBT</B> thin films prepared by physical vapor deposition exhibited large grains (∼2-5 μm sizes) and “layer-by-layer” stacked edge-on oriented molecules with an in-plane herringbone packing (intermolecular distances ∼3.25-3.46 Å) to favor two-dimensional (2D) source-to-drain (S → D) charge transport. The corresponding TC/BG-OFET devices demonstrated high electron mobilities of up to ∼0.6 cm2/V·s and <I>I</I>on/<I>I</I>off ratios over 107−108. These results demonstrate that the large band gap BTBT π-core is a promising candidate for high-mobility n-type organic semiconductors and, combination of very large intrinsic charge transport capabilities and optical transparency, may open a new perspective for next-generation unconventional (opto)electronics.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Poster Session:PS 0186 ; Endocrinology : Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio as an Infl ammatory Marker in Obesity

( Hanife Usta Atmaca ),( Feray Akbas ),( Ilker Nihat Okten ),( Eda Nuhoglu Kantarci ),( Berrin Belcik Inal ),( Mustafa Boz ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Obesity is a disease known to stimulate low grade infl ammation. N/L ratio has been started to be used as an indicator of systemic infl ammation. This study aims to examine the relationship between obesity and N/L ratio over anthropometric measurements, obesity grade, and some biochemical parameters. Methods: 96 obese patients (mild-moderate and severe) who are being monitored in obesity outpatient clinic, who have no concomitant disease, and who do not have a history of smoking and drug use, and as the control group, 20 patients of normal weight with the same characteristics were included in the study. Anthropometric measurements were recorded, and BMI was calculated. Biochemical tests and total blood counts were performed. N/L ratio was obtained by dividing neutrophil count by lymphocyte count. The results were evaluated using SPSS statistical analysis program. Results: A signifi cant increase was present in neutrophils and lymphocyte counts of morbid obese group compared to control groups. Due to both increased neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, even though L/N ratio increased, it was not found statistically signifi cant. The increase in total leucocyte count of morbid obese was statistically signifi cant compared to mild obese. While N/L ratio demonstrated a strongly positive correlation with total leucocyte count and neutrophil count, it demonstrated a weakly positive correlation with waist circumference and with hip circumference. Conclusions: N/L ratio increases by obesity grade and reveals that concomitant infl ammatory response increases. High count of circulating neutrophil in obese patients might be considered as an acute infl ammatory response to a chronic infl ammatory state. Therefore, N/L ratio might be used as an infl ammatory marker in obese patients, and might be helpful in the prediction of cardiovascular and metabolic risks for the patient.

      • Poster Session:PS 0491 ; Nephrology : Congenital Agenesis of the Inferior Vena Cava in a Presenting with Acute Renal Failure

( Hanife Usta Atmaca ),( Feray Akbas ),( Yesim Karagoz ),( Ebru Pekguc ),( Mustafa Boz ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Introduction: Agenesis of IVC (inferior vena cava) is a rare congenital anomaly which is generally incidentally found in asymptomatic patients. In patients with congenital intra-abdominal venous malformation, extreme care must be taken during radiological or surgical interventions. Case Report: A 35-year-old male patient was presented with nausea and vomiting following abdominal CT- performed for chronic abdominal pain-, presenting a subsequent decrease in urine output, and elevation of blood urea and creatinine. The patient had suffered from disseminated varicosities since the age of 15. In physical examination, intense subcutaneous venous collaterals on both lower extremities and abdomen and hepatosplenomegaly were observed. Grade 2 hydronephrosis in the right kidney and grade 4 hydronephrosis with decreased parenchymal thickness in the left kidney were present on renal ultrasonography. CT scan revealed discontinuity of contrast in the left portal vein compatible with portal vein thrombosis. On the left, ureteral continuity was not found. MR venography revealed an abnormally narrow IVC. The diagnosis was established as contrast induced nephropathy and the patient underwent hemodialysis. After 3 sessions, serum urea and creatinine levels, renal functions, and urine excretion returned to normal. The patient was discharged and a follow-up was planned. Discussion: Recognition of vascular abnormalities is important to prevent related complications. Agenesis of IVC enhances the risk of acute renal failure; regarding decreased renal fi ltration due to insuffi ciency of venous return and the mass effect on ureters, Extreme caution or even total abstinence for contrast media injection is necessary. Surgeons and interventional radiologists should be warned against potential complications.

      • Poster Session : PS 0396 ; Infectious Disease ; A Rarely Seen Empyema Cause: Leuconostoc Mesenteroides

( Hanife Usta Atmaca ),( Feray Akbas ),( Yesim Karagoz ),( Betul Borku Uysal ),( Mustafa Boz ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Case report: 64 year-old male patient was presented with cough, fever and sputum production. His medical history was unremarkable. He was producing and selling pickled vegetables. Only pathological fi nding in his physical examination was the reduction of pulmonary sounds in the lower part of left lung. Hemogram showed; leukocyte:5500/mm³ (neutrophil 65%, lymphocyte 30%), platelet: 287000/mm³, hematocrit 28%. Biochemical tests revealed normal, serum CRP level was 11,7 mg/dl. Pleural effusion was present in chest X-ray. Pleural ponction was performed. Gram-positive cocci and high concentration of leukocytes were seen in gram-staining in the exudative pleural fi uid. In the culture Leuconostoc mesenteroides was grown. CT showed pleural effusion and a consolidation containing air bronchogram. The patient was diagnosed with pleural empyema and drainage treatment with thorax tube and 2 grams of ceftriakson and 1 gr claritromycin daily were started. The symptoms regressed beginning from the fourth day. On the fourteenth day, CRP level returned to normal. The treatment was stopped at twenty-fi rst day with full recovery. Discussion: Leuconostocs are members of the family Streptococcacae and have only recently been recognized as potential pathogens. Infections by Leuconostoc species bacteria are uncommon, and usually affect patients with an underlying disease, or those fi tted with a venous catheter or subjects previously treated with vancomycin. Bacterias are found naturally in plants and vegetables and are used in milk, pickle and wine industries. While an underlying factor is needed for those organisms to become pathogenic, our case was completely healthy and had no invasive procedure previously. Because he was selling and directly producing pickles, it was considered that the organism could have passed directly. This case points out that; Leuconostoc mesenteroides should be considered as a causative agent in nasocomial infections, also in non- immunocompromised patients.
