<P>We report the synthesis of Fe3O4@mSiO2 nanostructures of different meso-silica (mSiO2) shell thickness, their biocompatibility and behaviors for loading and release of a model drug ibuprofen. The composite nanostructures have superparamagnetic magnetite cores of 208 nm average size and meso-silica shells of 15 to 40 nm thickness. A modified Stöber method was used to grow the meso-silica shells over the hydrothermally grown monodispersed magnetite particles. The composite nanoparticles show very promising drug holding and releasing behaviors, which depend on the thickness of meso-silica shell. The biocompatibility of the meso-silica-coated and uncoated magnetite nanoparticles was tested through cytotoxicity assay on breast cancer (MCF-7), ovarian cancer (SKOV3), normal human lung fibroblasts MRC-5, and IMR-90 cells. The high drug holding capacity and reasonable biocompatibility of the nanostructures make them ideal agents for targeted drug delivery applications in human body.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s11671-015-0920-5) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>
Human Anthropomorphic Gripper as an Automation Tool
Alvaro Uribe,Edgar Diaz,Hernando Leon 제어로봇시스템학회 2012 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.10
This paper presents the design, development and implementation of a 14 DOF human anthropomorphic pneumatic gripper as a tool for teaching automation basics using pneumatics and PLCs. The dexterity of the human hand allows several types of power and precision grasps for interacting with various scenarios, these features have inspired the development of robotics mimicking the human hand in applications such as collaborative robotics workcells, where each finger is an actuated mechanism with a specific task. Collaborative actions through pneumatic and PLC programming basics using this hand allows enhancing the user’s knowledge based on concepts and familiarity with the device. The pneumatic hand can be used on site, with the user directly operating it, and offline with a virtual reality tool for offering simultaneous accessible devices when multiple users need the hand. Robotics currently assists training surgical procedures, manipulation of elements in hazardous environments for us, kinematics, dynamics and path planning simulations for various industrial processes, or as didactic tools for inspiring school students for working with robotics. The pneumatic hand system is composed of an actuation, control and teleoperation subsystems, these interact for simulating the muscles, and the user’s inputs for executing the chosen tasks.
Memantine Reverses Social Withdrawal Induced by Ketamine in Rats
Ezequiel Uribe,José Landaeta,Richard Wix,Antonio Eblen 한국뇌신경과학회 2013 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.22 No.1
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of memantine on schizophrenia-like symptoms in a ketamine-induced social withdrawal model in rats. We examined therapeutic effects of memantine, an NMDA antagonist, and haloperidol, a classic antipsychotic drug, on this behavioral model. Administration of memantine (10 or 15 mgㆍkg-1) significantly reduced ketamine-induced social withdrawal, and this effect was more effective than that of haloperidol (0.25 mgㆍkg-1) by restoring the social interaction between rats with no modification in general motor activity. These results suggest that memantine could have a therapeutic potential for schizophrenia.

Objective Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-RI) is a rare and potentially treatable encephalopathy that usually affects people older than 50 years old and has an acute or subacute clinical presentation characterized by rapidly evolving cognitive decline, focal deficits and seizures. In a small subset of patients the disease can adopt a pseudotumoral form in the neuroimages that represents a very difficult diagnostic challenge. Methods Here in we report a patient with a tumour-like presentation of histopathologically confirmed CAA-RI. Results We also conducted a search and reviewed the clinical and radiological features of 41 cases of pseudotumoral CAA-RI previously reported in the literature in order to identify those characteristics that should raise diagnostic suspicions of the disease, there by avoiding unnecessary surgical treatments. Conclusion The therapy of CAA-RI with steroids is usually effective and clinical and radiological remission can be achieved in the first month in approximately 70% of cases.

Chemometric models using mid-infrared (MID-FTIR) spectroscopy were developed for detection and quantification of oxytetracycline and sulfathiazole contamination in honey samples. Low standard error of calibration (SEC) and prediction (SEP) values were achieved using a partial least squares algorithm (SEC= 1.02 and SEP=1.39 for oxytetracycline and SEC=1.24 and SEP=1.79 for sulfathiazole). Chemometric model-predicted concentrations of antibiotics were compared with ELISA results with coefficient of determination R2=0.8577 for oxytetracycline and R2=0.8216 for sulfathiazole. Classification of antibiotic contaminated honey samples and uncontaminated samples was carried out using Soft Independent Modeling Class Analogy analysis with a 100% correct classification rate with interclass distances in the range of 6.93-13.3. MID-FTIR chemometric models developed for detection and quantification of oxitetracycline and sulfathiazole in honey samples have been demonstrated.
Financing COVID-19 Deficits in Fiscally Dominant Economies: Is The Monetarist Arithmetic Unpleasant?
Martin Uribe 대외경제정책연구원 2020 East Asian Economic Review Vol.24 No.4
The coronavirus pandemic of 2019-20 confronted fiscally dominant regimes around the world with the question of whether the large deficits caused by the health crisis should be monetized or financed by issuing debt. The unpleasant monetarist arithmetic of Sargent and Wallace (1981) states that in a fiscally dominant regime tighter money now can cause higher inflation in the future. In spite of the qualifier ‘unpleasant,’ this result is positive in nature, and, therefore, void of normative content. I analyze conditions under which it is optimal in a welfare sense for the central bank to delay inflation by issuing debt to finance part of the fiscal deficit. The analysis is conducted in the context of a model in which the aforementioned monetarist arithmetic holds, in the sense that if the government finds it optimal to delay inflation, it does so knowing that it would result in higher inflation in the future. The central result of the paper is that delaying inflation is optimal when the fiscal deficit is expected to decline over time.
Arm-like Mechanism User Interface for 3D Animation
Alvaro Uribe-Quevedo,Hernando Leon,Byron Perez-Gutierrez 제어로봇시스템학회 2013 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2013 No.10
Character animation is traditionally accomplished using traditional input devices such as keyboards, mouse, joysticks, programming pads or motion capture systems with elevated costs making them unavailable to common users. However, 3D User Interfaces such as electromechanical sensors, depth maps and vision tracking have been changing how we interact with information in several applications and common use devices. Animation using 3D user interfaces allows more natural, fluent and precise queues of motion, which is why this work presents the implementation of an anthropomorphic mechanism for motion capture through flexion/extension and abduction/adduction with an arm mechanism of four Degrees of Freedom. The goal is to present the feasibility of assembling a low cost device that allows tracking suitable motion for performing an animation on a virtual character.
Gesture-based Teleoperation using a Holonomic Robot
Alvaro Uribe,Byron Perez-Gutierrez,Silas Alves 제어로봇시스템학회 2012 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.10
This work presents the development and integration of an user interface (UI) framework based on various current input devices that take advantage of our ergonomics. The purpose is to teleoperate a holonomic robot using upper member gestures and postures for studying the suitable of such interfaces when programming and interacting with a mobile robot. As performance vary from UI to UI the framework is focused to be used as a complementary industrial or didactic tool thus, changing how inexperience users tackle their first impressions when working with mobile robots while performing simple gesture-based teleoperation tasks.

Objective To find the safety of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) compared to each other, and/or placebo in the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) and/or schizoaffective disorder (SZA).Methods We performed a systematic review and a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the safety of LAIs versus other LAIs or placebo in adults diagnosed with SCZ or SZA. The primary outcomes were treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs), serious treatment emergent adverse events (STEAEs), and deaths. The secondary outcomes included treatment discontinuations due to adverse events and all-cause discontinuations. Results Seventeen RCTs were included (n=7,908). There were no significant differences between LAIs and placebo in the risk of presenting TEAEs. LAIs had a significant lower risk of presenting STEAEs except for aripiprazole. No significant differences in deaths were found. LAIs showed a significant protective effect against all-cause discontinuation, except for haloperidol. Only aripiprazole had a significantly lower risk of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events. Conclusion We found no significant differences in the risk of presenting TEAEs between LAIs and placebo. The majority of LAIs had a significantly lower risk of presenting STEAEs than placebo. Development of international guidelines for the report of safety outcomes related to antipsychotics especially for LAIs in clinical trials could minimize report and interpretation biases and improve the accuracy of posterior meta-analysis.

Multilayer polymer films continue to be used in food packaging high-speed lines;this research focuses on obtaining better film adhesion under controlled sealing conditions. The present work aims to describe the presence of temperature gradients in the body of the sealing jaw, the dwell time gradients, and the surface pressure gradients, experimenting with a highspeed sealing process. The samples' adhesion was measured using the peeling test, and the peeling graphs of the tests were analyzed to observe the differences and similarities of each sealing parameter combination. Experimental data were used to generate the surface response families of the seal strength of multilayer polymer film. The model describes, in a 3D space, the influence zones that sealing parameter gradients had on the seal strength. The surface model and experimental data indicate that temperature is a decisive parameter of seal strength.
