The effectiveness of wax secretion on chemical control in some mealybug species

        ULUSOY Selcuk,KAHYA Dogancan,BILGIN Mustafa Gokhan,APALAK Alaittin 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.3

The wax structure of mealybugs can be seen on the body naturally, causing natural resistance and decreasing the efficacy of insecticides. This study was conducted to determine effectiveness of wax structure on chemical control by removing with isoamyl alcohol(ISO) for Planococcus citri Risso (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera:Pseudococcidae) and Phenacoccus madeirensis Green (Hemiptera: Pseudococci dae). Before and after the occurrence of wax, LC 50 levels with bioassay were detected for Buprofezin (BP), sulfoxaflor (SF), chlorpyrifos ethyl (CH), dimethoate (DM), spirotetramat (SP), Lambda- Cyhalothrin (LC), pyr iproxyfen (PY) insecticides. The effectiveness of PY increased 10.6 and 6.5 times for P. Citri and P. solenopsis, the efficacy of BP increased 3 times for P. Madeirensis with the dissolution of the wax structure after the application of ISO. The lowest increase of efficacy was found 1.6 and 1.4 times for P. maderiensis and P. solenopsis for SF,1.1 times for BP on P. citri. The reproduction of the wax for adult female mealybugs was seen 72 h later after the ISO application. It has been revealed that the mealybug wax structure significantly reduced the effectiveness of some insecticides and this factor can provide remarkable contributions in chemical control.

Taurine relaxes human radial artery through potassium channel opening action

        Ulusoy, Kemal Gokhan,Kaya, Erkan,Karabacak, Kubilay,Seyrek, Melik,Duvan, ibrahim,Yildirim, Vedat,Yildiz, Oguzhan The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2017 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.21 No.6

The vascular actions and mechanisms of taurine were investigated in the isolated human radial artery (RA). RA rings were suspended in isolated organ baths and tension was recorded isometrically. First, a precontraction was achieved by adding potassium chloride (KCl, 45 mM) or serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT, $30{\mu}M$) to organ baths. When the precontractions were stable, taurine (20, 40, 80 mM) was added cumulatively. Antagonistic effect of taurine on calcium chloride ($10{\mu}M$ to 10 mM) -induced contractions was investigated. Taurine-induced relaxations were also tested in the presence of the $K^+$ channel inhibitors tetraethylammonium (1 mM), glibenclamide ($10{\mu}M$) and 4-aminopyridine (1 mM). Taurine did not affect the basal tone but inhibited the contraction induced by 5-HT and KCl. Calcium chloride-induced contractions were significantly inhibited in the presence of taurine (20, 40, 80 mM) (p<0.05). The relaxation to taurine was inhibited by tetraethylammonium (p<0.05). However, glibenclamide and 4-aminopyridine did not affect taurine -induced relaxations. Present experiments show that taurine inhibits 5-HT and KCl -induced contractions in RA, and suggest that large conductance $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^+$ channels may be involved in taurine -induced relaxation of RA.

      • Turkish Colour Naming on the Net

        Ulusoy, B.,Griffin, L.D.,Mylonas, D. 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

We explored Turkish colour naming using an Internet-based colour naming experiment to: a) collect colour names in wide cultural use with their corresponding colour ranges and response times, b) to estimate colour coordinates of centroids of 11 Turkish basic colour terms (BCTs) and to compare them to the 11 English BCTs estimated using the same web-experiment, and c) to establish the English equivalents of the most common Turkish colour names (n>11) based on the distribution of their colour coordinates. Turkish colour names were mostly monolexemic (61%) and 39% of responses were BCTs. The most frequent responses were the BCTs mor (eq. purple), pembe (eq. pink), mavi (eq. blue), yeşil (eq. green) and sarı (eq. yellow) followed by the non-basic turkuaz (eq. turquoise) and lila (eq. lilac). Response time analysis showed that participants responded quicker to sarı, mor, beyaz (eq. white) and siyah (eq. black) than to other terms. Turkish speakers reached consensus (dominance > 50%) for 25 colour names; sarı had the most samples named with consensus followed by mor, bordo (eq. burgundy) and lacivet (eq. navy blue). The comparison between centroids of Turkish and English eleven BCTs showed a very good agreement (CIEDE2000 distances: mean separation=2.5, standard deviation=1.5).

Comparison of the translucency of shaded zirconia all-ceramic systems

        Mutahhar Ulusoy,Sevcan Kurtulmus-Yilmaz 대한치과보철학회 2014 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.6 No.5

PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the translucency of shaded zirconia all-ceramic systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS Translucency of 3 different zirconia all-ceramic systems colored by different techniques was compared with a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max Press). Square-shaped specimens with 0.5 mm thickness were fabricated from In-Ceram YZ, ICE Zirkon and Katana systems in A1, A2 and A3.5 shades according to Vitapan Classical shade tab (n=11). Specimens were then veneered and glazed with corresponding veneer ceramic recommended by each zirconia system manufacturer and the total thickness was set to 1.5 mm. Translucency measurements were performed with VITA Easyshade Compact spectrophotometer after each stage and translucency parameter was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison test. RESULTS The control group was significantly more translucent than the zirconia systems (P<.05). ICE Zirkon cores showed the least translucency; neither In-Ceram YZ nor Katana systems were superior to each other in terms of translucency. Translucency of all specimens was decreased after veneering, and the translucency rankings were changed. CONCLUSION Coloring technique did not have a significant effect on translucency of zirconia cores. Although zirconia systems were less translucent than lithium disilicate glass ceramic, they had partial translucency and there were translucency differences among the zirconia systems. Chroma affected the translucency of precolored zirconia cores.

Bleeding metastasis of renal cell cancer to anal canal treated with radiation

        Cemal Ulusoy,Sila Guclu Mete,Andrej Nikolovski 대한방사선종양학회 2023 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.41 No.3

Renal cell cancer (RCC) has the ability to metastasize to various organs, including the anal canal which is reported to be the rarest location. An 88-year-old male patient who had previously been treated for right RCC subsequently developed distant metastases to the prostate, lungs, and small bowel. Four years following nephrectomy, the patient presented with a bleeding anal mass which was excised and has been proven to be an anal canal metastasis of RCC. Seven months post excision, regrowth occurred. The patient underwent stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy resulting in satisfactory regression during the 2-month follow-up period, without episodes of bleeding. The treatment options for metastatic post-nephrectomy disease should be considered with a multidisciplinary approach in order to achieve satisfactory symptom relief.

Active structural control via metaheuristic algorithms considering soil-structure interaction

Serdar Ulusoy,Gebrail Bekdaş,Sinan Melih Nigdeli 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.75 No.2

In this study, multi-story structures are actively controlled using metaheuristic algorithms. The soil conditions such as dense, normal and soft soil are considered under near-fault ground motions consisting of two types of impulsive motions called directivity effect (fault normal component) and the flint step (fault parallel component). In the active tendon-controlled structure, Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) type controller optimized by the proposed algorithms was used to achieve a control signal and to produce a corresponding control force. As the novelty of the study, the parameters of PID controller were determined by different metaheuristic algorithms to find the best one for seismic structures. These algorithms are flower pollination algorithm (FPA), teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) and Jaya Algorithm (JA). Furthermore, since the influence of time delay on the structural responses is an important issue for active control systems, it should be considered in the optimization process and time domain analyses. The proposed method was applied for a 15-story structural model and the feasible results were found by limiting the maximum control force for the near-fault records defined in FEMA P-695. Finally, it was determined that the active control using metaheuristic algorithms optimally reduced the structural responses and can be applied for the buildings with the soil-structure interaction (SSI).

A Case of Anomalous Origin and Course of Vertebral Artery in a Patient with Klippel Feil Syndrome

        Onur Levent Ulusoy,Hadi Sasani,Sezgi Burçin Barlas,Ayhan Mutlu,Mehdi Sasani 대한영상의학회 2016 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.17 No.4

Patients with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) have an increased incidence of vascular anomalies as well as vertebral artery (VA) anomalies. In this article, we presented imaging findings of a 15-year-old female patient with KFS with a rare association of extraforaminal cranially ascending right VA that originated from the ipsilateral carotid bulb. Trifurcation of the carotid bulb with VA is a very unusual variation and to the best of our knowledge, right-sided one has not been reported in the literature.
