Alice Walker has prodused a significant body of work since 1968.She Has been acclaimed by many to be one of the finest novelists in the U.S,.having captured both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer in 1983. Her sustantial body of writing is charcterized by recurrent motifs:the Black woan as creator,the relationship between struggle and change, a spiritual legacy of Black people in the Southe and so forth. Since English began to spread around the world five hundred years ago, all its varieties have taken on an independent history, some of them much influenced by local circumstances, others responding to changes in the prestige dialects of Great Britain and the United States. This research attempts to introduce the characteristics of World Englishes in Asia, Africa and Europe and to indicate the emergence of English as the first foreign language in Europe which has benefited the most from the increasing interest in foreign languages. At the same time this paper introduces the International Corpus of English(ICE), an ambitious projcet. When completed, these corpora will help the users of English and World Englishes. The encessity of mutual understanding among speakers of various Englishes is implicated in the conclusion.

1951년 미국 언어학회에서 Einer Haugen이 처음 사용한 것으로 알려진 '사회언어학'이란 용어는 이제 낯설은 용어에서 탈바꿈하여 언어학의 한 분야로 정립되어 가는 과정에 있다. 언어를 사회현상의 하나로서 체계적으로 연구해 보려는 노력은 새로운 것이 아니다. 프랑스의 Antoine Meillet는 언어와 사회문화적인 여건을 관련시켜 사회언어학 이론의 선구적 역할을 하였고 사회심리학자인 George H. Mead는 사회 상호작용속의 언어의 중요성을 강조하였다. 구조주의와 변형생성 문법에 반기를 들고 나온 사회언어학자들은 다른 사회집단, 다양한 사회적 상황에서 쓰이는 언어의 변이형, 분포연구에 관심을 갖게된 것이다. 사회언어학은 영어교육자의 관심을 차츰 기계적인 행위로서의 언어연구로부터 사회문화적 의미의 언어학적 표현으로서의 연구로 전환시키는데 성공했다. 영어교육자는 사회적으로 용납되는 언어의 문법을 알 필요가 있다. 사회언어학적 언어지식은 무한한 수의 특이한 문장을 만들어 내고 또한 다른 인간과 의사소통을 하는데 중요한 문법지식 만큼이나 중요하다. 실상 언어의 적절한 사용은 그것의 사회적 문화적 배경을 반영하며 동시에 사회문화적 목적을 전달한다. 모국인에게 있어서도 사회언어학적 능력 습득과정은 언제나 점진적일 수밖에 없다. 그런데 모국어의 사회언어학적 능력은 외국어의 사회언어학적 법칙을 사용하고 해석하는 데 밑바탕이 되기도 한다. 단지 익숙하지 못한 부분의 것을 상황, 대상, 대에 따라 적절하게 사용하도록 가르치는 것이 필요할 것이다. 교실에서 사용할 수 있는 언어수행능력 증진방법으로 사회적 언어의 규약, 대화, 문제해결 위주의 활동, 모의연습, 외국인과의 접촉을 통한 언어활동 등이 제시되고 있다. 사회언어학적 이해가 고려된 자료가 더욱 더 개발되고 교수와 학생 쌍방이 언어의 사회언어학적 양상을 제대로 알게 될 때 영어교육은 더 재미있고 효과적이며 산 결실을 맺게 될 것이다. 사회언어학이 태동되기까지의 역사적인 배경, 즉 언어학과 인류학, 언어학과 사회과학 등 타분야와의 관계 제시 및 사회언어학의 기본개념 소개는 본 논문의 앞 부분에 실려있다.

Invisible Man is a crucial text in which Ralph Ellison addresses the problematic of black identity in a society that hs denied the validity of that identity. This paper deals with two kinds of stories presented in the novel. The first one focuses on an imposition of meaning on the past, present, future that may necessitate distorting or ignoring the social reality. The second one puts emphasis on specific, discontinuous reality to the point of negating the possibility of meaning. The three sequences to be discussed include college experiences, life in New York, and the Brotherhood. The narrator finds his identity in nonidentity.

Since his enforced migration to America from the shores of west Africa, beginning in the 17th century, the Black American, both as slave and freedman, has had to cope with all kinds of hardships including the manipulation of a white majority. In 1940 when Richard Wright's Native Son was published, there were mixed reactions toward it. However, the novel soon turned out to be innovative and even revolutionary especially to the Black writers and the public. Even though the Black literature existed in the previous decades, Native Son was one of the first serious Black novels that had ever been produced. Native Son consists of three parts: Fear, Flight, and Fate. The novel is mainly a story of Bigger Thomas. Ge is a "Nigger" in a white man's world. His crimes horrify the whole of Chicago. Caught up by forces he could neither understand nor control, Bigger finds a sense of freedom and identity in acts of violence. Never does Bigger actively participate in either the Black America or the white America. However, he is surely and American. He is a native son. He is surely a faithful "damned nigger". On the whole, Wrighted did a good job in developing each part of the novel. Book Two is tightly knit and well written. Especially the flight scene is superb. However, Max's long speech in Book Three somehow seems to have destroyed the general flow of the novel. In spite of all, Native Son clearly shows the extent and content of black Americal literature. Wright did shown his themes of alienation, human fear, guilt and dread. Besides, he made an important contribution to American literature. His contribution is noteworthy.

Diverse Englishes as Tools for Better Cultural Understanding and Literacy

영어 사용자의 수가 10억에 육박함에 따라 영어의 모국어화자나 비모국어화자의 영어 사용과 기능은 그것의 필자나 화자의 국적과는 무관하게 다양해져 가고 있다. 자연히 이에 다른 몇 가지 흥미 있는 결과가 기대되기도 한다. 이들 중 어떤 것은 영어자체와 영어변화의 속도에 대한 사실과 연관되어 있고 다른 것은 영어내의 규범과 기준의 문제, 교육의 목표, 그리고 배우고 가르치는 것과 관련된 성공의 척도와 관련된다. 또 다른 것은 정체성의 인지와 영어 모국어 화자와 비모국어 화자 사이에 존재하는 서로 다른 인식결과와 관련이 있다. 본 논문은 교사들로 하여금 문화와 언어 때문에 영어사용 세계시민을 밖으로 몰아내지 않아야 한다는 그 이유를 강조하며, 문화적 차이를 현명하게 수용하게끔 하기 위해 영어의 전파와 그리고 세계영어들의 현 상태를 살펴보며 다양한 영어의 중요성 재인식을 강조한다.
