        “THE FORMATION OF NAMSADANG (KOREAN ITINERANT PERFORMER) TROUPES”: CHAPTER ONE OF A STUDY OF NAMSADANG TROUPES

        The namsadang represent a professional class of traveling entertainers that flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Korea. With deep roots in ritual practices and itinerant troupe performance culture, the namsadang in many ways served the role of mass entertainment for their rural, pre-modern Korean audiences. These artistic troupes were composed exclusively of males, and during the height of their activity they featured performances of percussion music and dance, bowl spinning, acrobatics, tightrope walking, mask dance, and puppetry. Although the namsadang were mistrusted and despised by the ruling elite, they were largely embraced by the commoner classes who eagerly awaited their visits to the countryside. The namsadang as an institution came to a close in the mid-twentieth century, under the pressures and other contingencies of the Japanese occupation and the Korean War. A revivalist movement, however, took place beginning in the 1950s with the help and concerted efforts of the activist and folklorist Professor Sim Usŏng. His academic and administrative work helped shed light on the poorly documented past of the namsadang, at the same time elevating their status and appreciation among a modern South Korean population. This article provides a critical translation of the first chapter of his seminal book on the topic, Namsadangp’ae yŏn’gu (A study of namsadang troupes).         Comparative Study of the Temperature-dependent Dielectric Properties of Au/PPy/n-Si (MPS)-type Schottky Barrier Diodes

        The dielectric properties of Au/PPy/n-Si metal-polymer-semiconductor (MPS)-type Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) were investigated by using capacitance-voltage (C-V ) and conductancevoltage (G/!-V ) measurements at various temperatures and voltages at frequencies of 100 kHz and 500 kHz. Both the real and the imaginary parts of the complex dielectric constant and dielectric loss ("0, "00) and of the electric modulus (M0, M00), as well as the conductivity (ac), were found to depend strongly on the temperature and the voltage. Both the C and G/! values increased with increasing applied voltage and had inversion, depletion, and accumulation regions as with a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) type behavior. Both the dielectric constant ("0) and the dielectric loss ("00) increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing frequency. The loss tangent (tan ) vs. temperature curve had a peak at about 200 K for both frequencies. The M0 and the M00 values decreased with increasing temperature and became independent of the frequency at high temperatures. The series resistance (Rs) of the diode decreased with increasing temperature for the two frequencies while the ac increased. Such behaviors of the dielectric properties with temperature were attributed to the restructuring and reordering of charges at interface states/traps due to the varying temperature, the interfacial polarization, and the interfacial polymer layer. ln(ac) vs. q/kT plots had two distinct linear regions with different slopes for the two frequencies. Such behaviors of these plots confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms corresponding to low and high temperatures. The values of the activation energy (Ea) were obtained from the slopes of these plots, and its value at low temperatures was considerably lower than that at high temperatures.

        Efficiency of Various Nutritional Sources to Improve Physical Properties of Saline-Sodic Soil

        This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of various inorganic and organic materials to improve physical properties of soil. Saline sodic soil (saturation percentage = 40.36%, $EC_e=5.15dS\;m^{-1}$, $pH_s=8.70$, $SAR=18.84(m\;mol\;L^{-1})^{1/2}$, bulk density =$1.49Mg\;m^{-3}$) was collected, brought to wire house and filled in pots after laboratory analysis for various parameters. Different sources of organic nutrients like farm manure (FM), press mud, compost, poultry manure and sesbania green manure were analyzed for their chemical composition. The experiment comprised of 12 treatments replicated thrice; $T_1$: control (recommended NPK), $T_2:{\frac{1}{2}}$ recommended NPK, $T_3$: FM at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_4$: pressmud at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_5$: compost at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_6$: poultry manure at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_7$: sesbania green manure at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_8:T_2$ + FM at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_9:T_2$ + pressmud at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{10}:T_2$ + compost at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{11}:T_2$ + poultry manure at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{12}:T_2$ + sesbania green manure at 0.75% by soil weight. These treatments were applied using completely randomized (CR) design and appropriate time was given to decompose these organic nutritional sources. Seeds of wheat cultivar Sahar-2006 were sown. After harvesting the wheat, soil samples were collected from each pot and analyzed for various physical properties like bulk density, porosity and saturation percentage. An improvement in physical properties (bulk density, porosity and saturation percentage) of soil was noticed with the application of various organic nutritional sources but role of compost alone ($T_5$) remained prominent.

        The present study is carried out to examine the combined effect of heat absorption on flow model. The model consists of unsteady flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid. The flow is along an impulsively started oscillating vertical plate with variable mass diffusion. The magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plate. The fluid model under consideration has been solved by Laplace transform technique. The numerical data obtained is discussed with the help of graphs and table. The numerical values obtained for skin-friction have been tabulated. To shorten the lengthy equations in the solution some symbols have been assumed, which are mentioned in appendix. The appendix is included in the article as the last section of the manuscript.

        Static Antiwindup Design for Nonlinear Parameter Varying Systems With Application to DC Motor Speed Control Under Nonlinearities and Load Variations

        <P>In this brief, a novel scheme to design an antiwindup gain by ensuring local stability for nonlinear parameter varying systems having an input saturation is derived. Antiwindup compensator (AWC) design is provided for a dynamic output feedback controller that meets the desired closed-loop stability and performance specifications in the absence of the input saturation. A linear matrix inequality-based condition by application of Lyapunov theory, a local sector condition, an upper bound on the nonlinearity, and parametric bounds is formulated for the AWC design to ensure asymptotic and <TEX>$\mathcal {L}_{2}$</TEX> stability. In contrast to the conventional approaches for nonlinear systems, the proposed AWC approach accounts for parametric variations, considers computationally simple static antiwindup, is straightforward for implementation, is useful for the existing control system, and can reduce the design conservatism. The proposed AWC design approach is tested for a practical scenario on the dc servo system control under armature nonlinearity, load variations, and control input saturation. Both simulation and experimental results are provided.</P>

        조기파막에 관한 임상적 고찰

        1971년 1월 1일부터 1980년 12월 31일까지 총 10년동안 본 고려대학교 의과대학 부속병원에서 분만한 총 8020예중 조기파막 696예를 대상으로 임상적 분석 및 고찰을 하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 조기파막의 예는 분만 8020예중 696예였으며 그 빈도는 8.67%였다. 2. 조기분만 407예중 조기파막은 48예로 11.78%였다. 3. 조기파막 696예중 초산부가 486예로 69.8%, 경산부가 210예로 30.2%을 나타내어 초산부에서 약 2배 이상의 높은 빈도를 보였다. 4. 조기파막을 산모의 연령군에 따라 나누어 볼 때 26세에서 30세에 가장 많이 발생하였다. 5. 모체의 합병질환은 28.87%로서 이중 임신 중독증이 가장 많았으며 그 다음으로는 임신 빈혈의 순위였다. 6. 제왕절개술은 696예의 조기파막환자중 129예로 18.6%를 차지하였으며 그 상응증으로는 협골반 및 아두골반불균이 38예로 가장 많았으며 그 다음으로 자궁내 태아긴박증,이상태아임, 신중독증 등의 순위였다. 그 외 경관이상 및 제대탈출등이 8예 및 6예였다. 7. 태아의 이상이나 산모의 여러가지 합병증 및 조기파막의 잠재기간과 비교하여 유도분만을 시형한 총 예는 123예로 이중 15예에서 36주 이전에 실시하였으며 36주 이후는 105예였다.( 이중 3예에서 유도분만 실패로 제왕절개을 시행하였다.) 8. 조기파막 696예중 신생아 체중은 2500gm~2,999gm 사이가 428예로 61.5%였다. 9. 조기파막 712예중 ( 쌍태임신 포함) 사산이 18예로 사산율은 1000명당 25.9명이었으며 조기사망율도 14명으로 1000명당 20.1명을 차지하므로써 주산기 사망율은 평균 1000명당 46명이었다. 10. 파막후 24시간 이상을 초과한 환자는 산모의 산후 발병이 시간에 정비례하여 높았다. 11. 파막직후 또는 입원즉시 투여하기 시작한 예방적 항생제 치료는 산모의 이환률 및 재원기간을 감소시켰다. This study is the clinical analysis of 696 cases of premature rupture of membranes among 8,020 deliveries at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Korea University Hospital from January 1, 1971 to December 31, 1980. The management of membrans is still controversial problems which is concerned with an increase of prematurity, maternal morbidity and infection of infants. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The incidence of premature rupture of membranes was 8.67% (696 cases out of 8,020 deliveries). 2) The incidence of premature rupture of membranes in premature deliveries was 11.7% (48 cases out of 407 premature deliveries). 3) The incidence of premature rupture of membranes in primipara group (69.8%; 486 cases out of 696 deliveries) was higher than multipara group (30.2%; 210 cases out of 696 deliveries). 4) The age group of 26 to 30 showed highest incidence in premature rupture of membrane. 5) The most frequent coincidental diseases of P.R.O.M. were preeclampsia and anemia. 6) The Cesarean section rate was 18.6% in P.R.O.M. According to frequency, the indications for C/S were C.P.D, intrauterine fetal distress, abnormal presentation, toxemia, cervical dystocia and prolapse of cord. 7) 15 cases before 36 weeks and 105 cases after 36 weeks of gestation were induced labor due to fetal distress or maternal complications in P.R.O.M. 8) The neonatal body weight group of 2,500 to 2,999gm among 696 cases of P.R.O.M. was predominant. 9) Perinatal death rate in P.R.O.M. was 46/1,000 total births, that is, there were 32 cases of perinatal deaths (18 cases of I.U.F.D. and 14 cases of neonatal death). 10) The incidence of the puerperal morbidity showed higher in association with the length of latent period. 11) The maternal morbidity could be reduced markedly by the use of prophylactic antibiotics, and also the prophylactic antibiotic use could reduce the duration of hospitalization.

        We present the capacity analysis of the millimeter Wave (mmWave) systems in a realistic 3-dimensional spatial channel model (3D-SCM) provided by the third-generation partnership project (3GPP). With the consideration of analog elevation beamforming in 3D Urban Micro Streat Canyon (UMi-Street Canyon) environment, capacity comparisons are performed considering mmWave frequencies. In particular, several factors such as rand and gas losses are analyzed, which have significant effects on channel capacity for high frequency communications.

      • Sum Rate Analysis of the Array of Subarrays Structures for mmWave Systems

        We consider the array structure to improve data rates for millimeter wave communication systems. Particularly, by fully utilizing the array of subarrays (AOSA) structure, we perform extensive simulation with various subarray sizes in the AOSA to examine their effects for urban micro scenarios. It is shown that the vertical stacking of subarrays outperforms other combinations with a fixed tilt angle. The sum rate performance is also analyzed based on the number of radio frequency chains among different frequencies.
