Making Southeast Asian Migrant Workers Visible in Taiwanese Cinema: "Pinoy Sunday" and "Ye-Zai"
Tzu-Chin Insky Chen 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2019 Cross-Currents Vol.0 No.33
In Taiwan, the term for “migrant workers” (waiji yigong) refers to non-Han immigrant populations—including those from Thailand and the Philippines—whose numbers have been increasing since the 2000s. As these populations have grown, they have become part of the public conversation, and cinematic representations of migrant workers have increased as well. Immigrant films function as a form of recognition and thereby challenge the homogeneous Taiwanese national identity. Two questions arise: Is it possible to change existing stereotypes and cultural conflicts? And, how can we avoid a crisis of oversimplified presentations of immigrants? In order to address these questions, this article examines two films: Ho Wi Ding’s Pinoy Sunday (Taibei Xingqitian 台北星期天 2009), a comedy that focuses on two Filipino immigrant workers’ lives in Taipei, and Tseng Ying-ting’s Ye-Zai 椰仔 (2012), a crime film with a plot that involves tracking down “runaway migrant workers” (taopao wailao). The author employs three different lenses or paradigms to consider the establishment of migrant-worker subjects in these films in order to fully understand the power dynamics at play in the workers’ interactions with Taiwan’s broader society. Because of state and social attempts to control these migrant workers, the first important paradigm is the act of “running away,” which makes border restrictions in Taiwan clear and creates a space to explore strategies of escape from routine lives. Second, by considering how different powers intersect, the author explores the relationship between the viewer and the viewed, and how migrant workers can become the subjects, not just the objects, in this paradigm. By employing two techniques of visualization—the gaze and symbolism—these films present migrant workers’ emotions and desires, which are rarely shown in mainstream cinemas, and encourage viewers to recognize the perspectives of migrant workers. Finally, the author suggests the use of the language act as a means of resistance to show different affiliations and identities in both films; the visibility of these migrant workers challenges their discrimination.
Supervised Control for Robot-Assisted Surgery Using Augmented Reality
Tzu-Hsuan Ho,Kai-Tai Song 제어로봇시스템학회 2020 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2020 No.10
In this paper, we propose an AR-based robotic system that can plan and execute a trajectory based on a 3D medical model and allow the surgeon to supervise the execution of surgical process. In order to achieve image-guided surgery, a hand-eye calibration procedure is developed by using AprilTag to obtain the transformation between the workspace coordinate and the robot coordinate, and perform the image navigation task of the surgical robot to complete a drilling task. A procedure of robot supervised control is proposed to assign or modify the robot trajectory based on AR visualization and 3D model. A specified AR marker is used to project virtual objects in the AR glasses. We developed a robot registration algorithm to match the AR virtual coordinate system and the workspace coordinate system, and convert the planned trajectory into robot trajectory. Experimental results on the lab-built robotic system show that a user can adjust the position and orientation of the insertion point on a bone model, and transmit the trajectory information to the robot for execution. The proposed visualization-based robot navigation method has the potential to enhance the safety of surgical operation.

In the current body of knowledge about the influence of native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) on the professional identity of non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs), the fundamental question of ‘What exactly do native English speakers (NESs) mean to NNESTs?’ has been left unanswered and the voices of preservice NNESTs are largely absent. This study examined the influence of NESTs as ‘significant others’ in the English language teaching profession on preservice NNESTs’ identity by looking into how preservice NNESTs interpret the term native English speakers, accept native speaker norms, and respond to the active recruitment of NESTs through the national policy in Taiwan. Survey and interview data were collected from 258 preservice English teachers. The findings show that although the participants held diverse views on who constitute NESs, they shared a unanimous subscribingto native-speakerism. The participants gave conditional support to the policy of recruiting NESTs while highlighting their opposition to uncertified NESTs and differentiated payment. Implications to teacher education and policy decisions are provided.
Corticosteroids, Psychological Stress, and Dermatitis
( Tzu Kai Lin ),( Juan Luis Santiago ) 한국피부장벽학회 2013 한국피부장벽학회지 Vol.15 No.2
Dry environmental conditions induce a variety of pathological modifications in skin such as epidermal proliferation and inflammation, which are involved in the physiopathology of atopic dermatitis. Environmental dryness also induces cortisol secretion in the epidermis, which correlates with IL-1β synthesis in keratinocytes. This local production of cortisol might modulate inflammation and content the flares in chronic dermatitis. In fact, corticosteroids are widely used in the treatment of different inflammatory dermatoses by dermatologists. On the other hand, psychological stress (PS) is well recognized to increase the plasma glucocorticoid (GC) levels and exacerbate inflammatory dermatoses in humans. PS has been shown to impair skin barrier in murine model. Not only the stress-induced delay of barrier repair, but also the increase in plasma GC could be blocked by pretreatment with chlorpromazine, a tranquilizer. When mice were treated with the GC receptor antagonist, RU-486, baseline TEWL or barrier recovery rate were not altered. These results suggest that the stress-induced increase in GC might explain the impairment in skin barrier. Since increased endogenous GC production is induced by a variety of different stressors, including trauma, surgery, infection, and inflammation, it is likely that barrier homeostasis will be compromised in a wide range of situations. Because PS has been preserved along evolution, there should be some advantage on health and survival. In fact, acute PS might provide some benefits decreasing the intensity of the early inflammatory response.

The coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is one of the most widely used precision measurement machines in the machinery industry. In this study, the analysis and compensation of structural deformation in spatial coordinates effectively depicts the improvement of the spatial accuracy of the motion of a three-dimensional measuring machine in a measurement area. In addition to accuracy, it is also projected that the measurement can be carried out more efficiently. Therefore, the measurement speed of the CMM and dynamic characteristics of the structure are becoming increasingly important. Consequently, the measuring machine has better dynamic characteristics and meets high precision requirements. During measurement, the geometric errors generated by the machine are mainly because of its moving structure in the spatial position. In this study, the CMM is driven by aerostatic bearings; the boundary conditions and parameter settings of each component are established to obtain analysis results that are highly consistent with the actual machine characteristics. The finite element method is used as an analysis tool, including static deformation, modal, spectrum, and transient analyses. Because of the structural deformation and spatial geometric errors caused by the moving structure of the measuring machine, the relative deformation errors can be evaluated through the analysis of the spatial position error compensation to improve the measurement accuracy of the machine.
