      • The Effect of Benzene on the Activity of Adenosine Deaminase in Tissues of Rats

Turhan, Ali,Dere, Egemen Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.3

Swiss Albino (Rat rattus norvegicus) rats were intraperitoneally injected with a 100 mg $kg^{-1}$ dosage of benzene, a toxic and carcinogenic agent widely used for industrial purposes. Changes in the adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in the liver, kidney and serum of rats were investigated at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 h following injection. Serum physiological was administered to each control group. Enzyme activities were measured spectrophotometrically. Our purpose was to further investigations of some diseases caused by benzene, and present evidence of variations in the activity of ADA enzyme effected by benzene. While benzene caused significant inhibitions in ADA activity in the liver at 16 and 32 h and at 0.05 probability level, no significant inhibition or activation occurred at other test periods (hours). ADA activity did not present any significant variation in the kidneys. It was observed that ADA activity displayed similar patterns in the control groups. Comparisons of ADA activities in the two groups showed a statistically significant decrease between $4^{th}$ and $64^{th}$ hours (p< 0.05), demonstrating a direct correlation between benzene and its effects on ADA enzymes.

Evaluation of the Nutritional and Storage Quality of Meatballs Formulated with Bee Pollen

Turhan, Sadettin,Yazici, Fehmi,Saricaoglu, Furkan Turker,Mortas, Mustafa,Genccelep, Huseyin Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resource 2014 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.34 No.4

In this study, the nutritional and storage quality of meatballs formulated with different levels (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0%) of bee pollen were investigated during storage at $41^{\circ}C$ for 9 d. Protein content of meatballs increased, while moisture content decreased with increased pollen. The addition of pollen improved cooking loss but decreased the redness (Hunter a value) and sensory scores. Textural parameters (hardness, springsness, gumminess, and chewiness) were affected by pollen addition and the hardness and gumminess values of meatballs decreased as the pollen content increased. While C18:0 content of meatballs slightly decreased with pollen addition, C18:2n-6c, C18:3n-3, C20:5n-3, and PUFA contents increased. The PUFA/saturated fatty acids (P/S) ratio increased from 0.05 in the control to 0.09 in meatballs with 6.0% pollen. The n-6/n-3 ratio decreased from 11.84 in the control to 3.65 in the meatballs with 6.0% pollen. The addition of pollen retarded the lipid oxidation and inhibited the bacterial growth in meatballs. The pH, redness, TBA value and total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, coliform bacteria and S. aureus counts values changed significantly during storage. The results suggest that bee pollen could be added to enhance the nutritional and storage quality of meatballs with minimal changes in composition and/or sensory properties.

The Partial Purification and Properties ofPepsin Obtained from Turkey Proventriculus

        Sadettin Turhan,Hasan Temiz,Umut Aykut,Emin Okumus 한국생물공학회 2007 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.12 No.4

In this study, pepsin from turkey proventriculus was purified, and its biochemical properties examined. Initially, the turkey proventriculus (stomach) was mixed with 10% NaCl (1:2, w/v) and extracted by centrifugation to produce a crude extract. The partial purification of the extract was carried out using Sephadex G-50 resin in gel filtration column chromatography. The fractions obtained by gel filtration were analyzed for milk clotting activity (MCA), protein content, proteolytic activity (PA), purification factor (PF), and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis was also performed. The enzyme was purified 207-fold with a recovery of 36%. The first 4 fractions did not have any activities; fractions 7, 8, and 9 exhibited the highest levels of milk clotting and proteolytic activity. The electrophoretic patterns revealed that further purification steps should be applied for better results.

Influence of Rootstocks on Yield and Fruit Characteristics and Quality of Watermelon

        Ahmet Turhan,Nese Ozmen,Hayrettin Kuscu,Mehmet Sitki Serbeci,Vedat Seniz 한국원예학회 2012 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.53 No.4

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of grafting and kinds of rootstocks on yield that are economically feasible for the watermelon producer. Fruit characteristics and quality attributes of grafted plants in open field conditions were also analyzed. The tongue approach grafting method was adopted. Three Watermelon cultivars of ‘Crimson Tide’, ‘Dumara’, and ‘Farao’ were used as the scion. Three hybrid squashes of ‘Dynamo’, ‘RS-841’, and ‘Shintosa’ were used as rootstocks. Results showed that some fruit quality indicators such as dry matter, total soluble solids, total sugar and titratable acid contents were lower in grafted plants while lycopene contents remained unchanged. The pH was slightly altered by grafting. Use of rootstock did not show advantages at comparable fruit quality indicators. Results also showed that fruit shape index, rind thickness, fruit weight, total yield and marketable yield were significantly influenced by grafting. Use of rootstocks significantly increased previously mentioned values which is related with yield,as compared to the non-grafted plant. Analyses proved the use of rootstocks as economically feasible and an advantageous alternative in watermelon production.

Predicting Prolonged Wound Drainage after Hemiarthroplasty for Hip Fractures: A Stacked Machine Learning Study

        Sultan Turhan,Umut Canbek,Tugba Dubektas-Canbek,Eralp Dogu 대한정형외과학회 2023 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.15 No.6

Background: Prolonged wound drainage (PWD) is one of the most important reasons that increase the risk of early periprosthetic joint infection after arthroplasty. It is very important to evaluate the risk factors for PWD in the surgical field after arthroplasty surgery. This can be accomplished using machine learning or artificial intelligence methods. Our aim in this study was to compare machine learning methods in predicting possible PWD. Methods: The study was carried out on clinical, laboratory, and radiological data of 313 patients who underwent hemiarthroplasty (HA) for proximal femur fractures. We preprocessed the dataset and trained and tested machine learning methods using cross validation. We compared various machine learning algorithms (linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, k-nearest neighbors, gradient boosting machine, and logistic regression [LR]) based on performance measures. We also combined the most successful algorithms with a metaclassifier. To help understand the relationship between risk factors, we provided a risk factor severity ranking. Results: To estimate the risk of PWD, classification was performed with first-level classifiers and then integrated as a LR-based meta-learner stacking method. More performance improvements were achieved with the stacking method. Conclusions: We found that the stacking method was superior to other methods in PWD classification. We determined that the volume of fluid collected from the drain, morbid obesity class, blood transfusion, and body mass index score were the four most important risk factors according to stacking.
