Comparison of Wavelet Based Hybrid Models for Daily Evapotranspiration Estimation using Meteorological Data

Turgay Partal 대한토목학회 2016 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.20 No.5

This paper investigates the comparative performance of wavelet based radial basis networks and multi linear regression in daily reference evapotranspiration estimation. The meteorological data (air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, relative humidity) from two stations in the United States was evaluated for estimating models. The wavelet based radial basis network combines wavelet transformation and radial basis neural network, while the wavelet based regression model combines wavelet transformation and multi linear regression. The results show that the wavelet transformation has significantly positive effects on modeling performance. The wavelet based radial basis network provided the best performance evaluation criteria.

Detection of Pathotypes and Genetic Diversity of Cercospora beticola

Turgay, Emine Burcu,Bakir, Melike,Ozeren, Pinar,Katircioglu, Yakup Zekai,Maden, Salih The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2010 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.26 No.4

The pathotypes of Cercospora beticola, causal agent of sugar beet leaf spot disease, were identified by application of pathogenicity test using 100 isolates obtained from the provinces with intensive sugar beet cultivation. For the identification of pathotypes, five sugar beet cultivars were used each with different resistance factors. Cultivar reactions were determined by inoculation of cultivars with the isolates under controlled conditions and measuring disease severity on the $15^{th}$ day according to the 1-9 KWS Scale. Based on the reactions of the five cultivars, a total of 15 pathotypes were detected. All employed sugar beet cultivars were resistant to Pathotype no:1 comprising most of the isolates. Genetic diversity of the causal agent was characterized by AFLP reaction. The products acquired at the end of AFLP reaction were detected by means of Beckman CEQ 8800 DNA Capillary Series Analysis and the results obtained were evaluated according to the similarity index UPGMA. For the genetic analysis of C. beticola isolates, 9874 polymorphic fragments of sizes between 100 and 500 bp were analysed which were generated by nine primers. The dendrogram derived from AFLP analysis depicted the existence of five different subgroups. The polymorphism rate among isolates was 91.13% and the dendrogram distribution of the pathotypes obtained by pathogenicity indicated that pathotypes were not discriminated and did not compose any groups.

A method for the non-linear and failure load analysis of reinforced concrete frames

Turgay Cosgun1,Baris Sayin 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2014 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.14 No.1

Modern trend in structural design is to use smaller elements in order to ensure several purposes such as economy, functionality and aesthetic in appearance. However, because of decreasing rigidity of the structural elements, the system displacements increases and displacements become an important subject in this kind of structures takes into account both geometrical changes and the carrying capacity of the material after linear-elastic boundary. In this study, a method is proposed to calculate the failure loads and to analyse the reinforced concrete space frame systems. The numerical examples gathered from the literature survey are solved with this method utilising the prepared computer program and the comparable results are presented. The results show that the method is sufficiently accurate.

Effects of Beak Trimming, Stocking Density and Sex on Carcass Yield, Carcass Components, Plasma Glucose and Triglyceride Levels in Large White Turkeys

        Turgay Sengul,Hakan Inci,Ahmet Y. Sengul,Bunyamin Sogut,Selahattin Kiraz 한국축산식품학회 2015 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.35 No.6

This study was conducted to determine the effects of beak trimming, stocking density (D) and sex (S) on live weight (LW), carcass yield and its component, and plasma glucose (PG) and triglyceride levels in Large White turkeys. To accomplish this aims, totally 288 d old large white turkey chicks (144 in each sex) were used. Beaks of 77 male and female poults were trimmed when 8 d old with an electrical beak trimmer. The birds were fed by commercial turkey rasion. Experiment was designed as 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 3 replications in each group. Beak trimming and stocking density did not affect live weight, carcass composition and its components. The higher LW and carcass weight observed in trimmed groups. As expected, male birds are heavier than female, and carcass percentage (CP) would be adverse. However, in this study, CP of male was higher in trimmed, in 0.25 m2 /bird. (D) × sex (S) interaction had an effect on both CP and thigh weights (p<0.05). Significantly D × S was observed in LW, CP and PG. The weight of carcass and its some components were higher in male. S × D interaction had an effect on plasma glucose level (p<0.05). Triglyceride level was affected (p<0.05) by sex. Significant relationships were found between percentage of thighs (r=0.447, p<0.01) and percentage of breast (r=0.400, p<0.01). According to this study, it can be said that trimming is useful with density of 0.25 m2 /bird in turkey fattening.

A REMARK ON THE CONJUGATION IN THE STEENROD ALGEBRA

TURGAY, NESET DENIZ Korean Mathematical Society 2015 대한수학회논문집 Vol.30 No.3

We investigate the Hopf algebra conjugation, ${\chi}$, of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}_2$, in terms of the Hopf algebra conjugation, ${\chi}^{\prime}$, of the mod 2 Leibniz-Hopf algebra. We also investigate the fixed points of $\mathcal{A}_2$ under ${\chi}$ and their relationship to the invariants under ${\chi}^{\prime}$.

Fast and Efficient Method for Fire Detection Using Image Processing

Turgay Celik 한국전자통신연구원 2010 ETRI Journal Vol.32 No.6

Conventional fire detection systems use physical sensors to detect fire. Chemical properties of particles in the air are acquired by sensors and are used by conventional fire detection systems to raise an alarm. However, this can also cause false alarms; for example, a person smoking in a room may trigger a typical fire alarm system. In order to manage false alarms of conventional fire detection systems, a computer vision-based fire detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. The proposed fire detection algorithm consists of two main parts: fire color modeling and motion detection. The algorithm can be used in parallel with conventional fire detection systems to reduce false alarms. It can also be deployed as a stand-alone system to detect fire by using video frames acquired through a video acquisition device. A novel fire color model is developed in CIE L*a*b* color space to identify fire pixels. The proposed fire color model is tested with ten diverse video sequences including different types of fire. The experimental results are quite encouraging in terms of correctly classifying fire pixels according to color information only. The overall fire detection system’s performance is tested over a benchmark fire video database, and its performance is compared with the state-of-the-art fire detection method.

Geometric and Material Nonlinear Analysis of Three-dimensional Steel Frames

Turgay Cosgun1,Baris Sayin 한국강구조학회 2014 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.14 No.1

Results obtained through theoretical and empirical studies which examined the nonlinear behaviour of construction membersenabled us to characterize the behaviour of construction systems under external effects more closely. The calculation methodsthat took into consideration the nonlinear behaviour of the construction members and the nonlinear effects of their geometricalvariations had to be developed in order to evaluate these phenomena and to design structures according to their collapse loadprinciple. In the presented study, a computer program was developed for the characterization of structural systems by takinginto consideration the nonlinear conditions of material behaviours under increasing loads and by considering the second-ordereffects. A matrix-replacement method was used as the basis for developing the program, which takes into consideration theeffects of axial forces on the stiffness of the member by using the stability functions and the effects of plastic hinges bysystematically changing the stiffness matrix in each occurrence of the plastic hinges. In the study, based on the results obtainedfrom the examples, which were solved by the developed program, it was identified that the program could yield rapid andreliable results depending on the user-defined values (number of nodes, error limit for the iteration) and it is observed that theresults are consistent with the literature. The obtained results in this study have contributed to capability of converting twodimensional analyses to three-dimensional analysis of stability functions developed.
