A Kröger-Vink Compatible Notation for Defects in Inherently Defective Sublattices

        Truls Norby 한국세라믹학회 2010 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.47 No.1

Traditional Kröger-Vink (K-V) notation defines sites in ionic crystals as interstitial or belonging to host ions. It enables description and calculations of combinations of native and foreign defects, including dopants and substituents. However, some materials exhibit inherently disordered partial occupancy of ions and vacancies, or partial occupancy of two types of ions. For instance, the high temperature disordered phases of Bi2O3, Ba2In2O5, La2Mo2O9, mayenite Ca12Al14O33, AgI, and CsHSO4 are all good ionic conductors and thus obviously contain charged point defects. But traditional K-V notation cannot account for a charge compensating defect in each case, without resorting to terms like “100% substitution” or “Frenkel disorder” – the former arbitrary and awkward and the latter inappropriate. Instead, a K-V compatible nomenclature in which the partially occupied site is defined as the perfect site, has been proposed. I here introduce it thoroughly and provide a number of examples.

      • Dissolution of Protons in Oxides

Norby, Truls The Korean Ceramic Society 1998 The Korean journal of ceramics Vol.4 No.2

The paper gives a brief introduction to protonic defects and their chemistry, thermodynamics and transport in oxides. The temperature dependence of the equilibrium concentration of protons is illustrated and compared for different acceptor-doped oxides. The difficulties of saturating as well as emptying the oxides of protons are discussed. In order to illustrate the possibility of lattice relaxation of defects, a conceptual study is made of a case where the enthalpy of dissolution of protons(water) at the cost of oxygen vacancies is assumed dependent on the concentration of vacancies. It is shown how this changes the behavior of hydration curves vs temperature and water vapour pressure. finally, a discussion is given on the water uptake in heavily oxygen deficient oxides; how water uptake may affect order-disorder in the oxygen sublattice and eventually lead to defective, disordered or ordered oxyhydroxides or hydroxides of potential interest as intermediate temperature proton conductions.

A Longitudinal Study of the Relationship Between Health Behavior Risk Factors and Dependence in Activities of Daily Living

        정상혁,박경옥,Jung, Sang-Hyuk,Ostbye, Truls,Park, Kyoung-Ok The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2006 예방의학회지 Vol.39 No.3

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to shed further light on the effect of modifiable health behavior risk factors on dependence in activities of daily living, defined in a multidimensional fashion. Methods: The study participants were 10,278 middle aged Americans in a longitudinal health study, the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS). A multi-stage probability sampling design incorporating the effect of population sizes (Metropolitan and non-metropolitan), ethnicity (the non- Hispanic White, the Hispanic, and the Black), and age (age 51-61) was utilized. Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) were measured using five activities necessary for survival (impairment in dressing, eating, bathing, sleeping, and moving across indoor spaces). Explanatory variables were four health behavior risk factors included smoking, exercise, Body Mass Index (BMI), and alcohol consumption. Results: Most participants at baseline were ADL independent (1992). 97.8% of participants were independent in all ADL's at baseline and 78.2% were married. Approximately 27.5% were current smokers at baseline, and the subjects reported moderate or heavy exercise were 74.8%. All demographic characteristics and behavioral risk factors were significantly associated with the ADL status at Wave 4 except alcohol consumption. Risk behaviors such as current smoking, sedentary life style and high BMI at Wave 1 were associated with ADL status deterioration; however, moderate alcohol consumption tended to be more related to better ADL status than abstaining at Wave 4. ADL status at Wave 1 was the strongest factor and the next was exercise and smoking affecting ADL status at Wave 4. People who were in ADL dependent at Wave 1 were 15.17 times more likely to be ADL dependent at Wave 4 than people who were in ADL independent at Wave 1. Concerning smoking cigarettes, people who kept only light exercise or sedentary life style at Wave 1 were 1.70 times more likely to be died at Wave 4 than the people who did not smoke at Wave 1. Conclusions: All demographics and health behaviors at wave 1 had consistently similar OR trends for ADL status to each other except alcohol consumption. Smoking and exercise in health behaviors, and age and gender in demographics at Wave 1 were significant factors associated with ADL group separation at Wave 4.

The Relationship of Socioeconomic and Behavioral Risk Factors With Trends of Overweight in Korea

Shin, Jin Hee,Dupre, Matthew E.,Ostbye, Truls,Murphy, Gwen,Silberberg, Mina The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2015 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.48 No.6

Objectives: Previous studies have shown that overweight (including obesity) has increased significantly in Korea in recent decades. However, it remains unclear whether this change has been uniform among all Koreans and to what extent socioeconomic and behavioral factors have contributed to this increase. Methods: Changes in overweight were estimated using data from the 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007-2009, and 2010-2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=55 761). Results: Overweight increased significantly among men but not among women between 1998 and 2012. Changes in socioeconomic and behavioral factors over the time period were not associated with overall trends for both men and women. However, we found significant differences in the prevalence of overweight relative to key risk factors. For men, overweight increased at a significantly greater rate among the non-exercising (predicted probability [PP] from 0.23 to 0.32] and high-calorie (PP from 0.18 to 0.37) groups compared to their active and lower-calorie counterparts, respectively. For women, overweight increased only among the non-exercising (PP from 0.27 to 0.28) and low-income (PP from 0.31 to 0.36) groups during this period. Conclusions: These findings suggest that programs aimed at reducing overweight should target Korean men and women in specific socioeconomic and behavioral risk groups differentially.

Oral Administration and Intralesional Injection of Hyaluronic Acid Versus Intralesional Injection Alone in Peyronie’s Disease: Results from a Phase III Study

        Cai Tommaso,Tiscione Daniele,Favilla Vincenzo,Puglisi Marco,Palumbo Fabrizio,Zucchi Alessandro,Malossini Gianni,Palmieri Alessandro,Bjerklund Johansen Truls E. 대한남성과학회 2021 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.39 No.3

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of combined oral administration and intralesional injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) with intralesional injections alone, in patients with early onset of Peyronie’s disease (PD). Materials and Methods: For this prospective, randomized phase III clinical trial we included patients with recent diagnosis of PD. Eighty-one patients were randomized into two groups. Group A consisted of 41 patients receiving oral administration of HA in combination with weekly intralesional injection of HA for 6 weeks. Group B consisted of 40 patients group B who received weekly intralesional injections of HA for 6 weeks, only. The main outcome measures were the changes from baseline to the end of therapy after three months in penile curvature (°) and changes in the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5) score and patient’s global impressions of improvement (PGI-I) score. Results: Group A had a significantly larger reduction in penile curvature as compared with group B (Group A: -7.8°, Group B: -4.1° [p<0.001]). Group A also showed a higher improvement in IIEF-5 and PGI-I scores in comparison with Group B (Group A: +4 IIEF-5, Group B: +2 IIEF-5 [p<0.001]; Group A: 3 PGI-I, Group B: 1 PGI-I, [p<0.001]). At three months both groups had a significant reduction of penile curvature from baseline (p<0.001). Conclusions: Oral administration combined with intralesional treatment with HA shows greater efficacy to improve penile curvature and overall sexual satisfaction in comparison with intralesional HA treatment alone.

Prostate calcifications: A case series supporting the microbial biofilm theory

        Tommaso Cai,Francesco Tessarolo,Iole Caola,Federico Piccoli,Giandomenico Nollo,Patrizio Caciagli,Sandra Mazzoli,Alessandro Palmieri,Paolo Verze,Gianni Malossini,Vincenzo Mirone,Truls E. Bjerklund Joha 대한비뇨의학회 2018 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.59 No.3

Purpose: Prostate calcifications are a common finding during transrectal prostate ultrasound in both healthy subjects and patients, but their etiopathogenesis and clinical significance are not fully understood. We aimed to establish a new methodology for evaluating the role of microbial biofilms in the genesis of prostate calcifications. Materials and Methods: Ten consecutive patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy were enrolled in this study. All of the patients presented with prostate calcifications during transrectal ultrasound evaluation before surgery and underwent Meares-Stamey tests and clinical evaluation with the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index and the International Prostate Symptom Score. At the time of radical prostatectomy, the prostate specimen, after removal, was analyzed with ultrasonography under sterile conditions in the operating room. Core biopsy specimens were taken from the site of prostate calcification and subjected to ultrastructural and microbiological analysis. Results: The results of the Meares-Stamey test showed only 1 of 10 patients (10%) with positive cultures for Escherichia coli. Two of five patients (40%) had positive cultures from prostate biopsy specimens. Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus raffinosus, and Citrobacter freundii were isolated. Ultrastructural analysis of the prostate biopsy specimens showed prostate calcifications in 6 of 10 patients (60%), and a structured microbial biofilm in 1 patient who had positive cultures for E. faecalis and E. raffinosus. Conclusions: Although the findings are supported by a low number of patients, this study highlights the validity of the proposed methodology for investigating the role of bacterial biofilms in the genesis of prostate calcification.
