Abstract A Study on Hallyu in Vietnam Focusing on K-pop Tran Tuyet Hanh Department of Digital Media, Graduate School, Myongji University Directed by Associate Professor Kwak Han Ju This thesis deals with the current status and prospects of Hallyu(Korean Wave) in Vietnam. To this end, I will first examine Hallyu as a whole and discuss its development process, current status, and future prospects in Vietnam, focusing on K-pop. Since the end of the 1990s, Hallyu has attracted much attention. In the late 1990s, it began in East Asia, spreading to the rest of the world. Its field also started with TV dramas and K-pops, and spread to movies, games, fashion, and beauty. Hallyu, which is a global popular culture phenomenon that can not be ignored, has been very popular in Vietnam. In Vietnam, Hallyu began with broadcasting of Korean TV dramas in 1997 and has spread not only to broadcasting but also to popular music and movies. Vietnam, an emerging economy with a large population in Southeast Asia, was either restricted or passive in accepting foreign cultures because of its historical experience of suffering from the invasion of foreign powers and the peculiarity of a state governed by a socialist ideology. Nevertheless, Hallyu is booming, changing not only the popular culture but also becoming a major culture influencing lifestyle of numerous Hallyu fans. Especially for K-pop, which is having a great influence in recent years, its songs and music videos are not only being avidly consumed through online but also Korean pop artists have performed in Vietnam. V-pop singers who imitate K-pop's music, choreography, and fashion are appearing, and there are even instances where the plagiarism is apparent. In addition, the performance of the K-pop concert affects V-pop positively, and the Vietnamese singers are expanding the exchange between the two countries performing in Korea. In this way, it seems that the excellence of Hallyu content, Vietnamese yearning for developed culture but also the cultural similarity with Korea such as Vietnam's Confucian tradition and family-centeredness propel and continue Hallyu in Vietnam. As the bilateral relations on the economic, political and cultural planes have become more intensive, Hallyu and other relations have had a positive influence on each other. Keyword: Hallyu, Localization, K-Pop, V-Pop, Cultural Exchange, Vietnamese Culture. 국문초록 K-pop을 중심으로 한 베트남 내 한류 연구 (A Study on Hallyu in Vietnam Focusing on K-pop) Tran Tuyet Hanh 명지대학교 대학원 디지털미디어학과 지도교수 곽 한 주 본 논문은 베트남 내의 한류의 현황과 전망을 다룬다. 이를 위해 우선 한류 전반에 대해 살펴보고 베트남 내의 한류 전개과정, 현재 상태, 향후 전망을 K-pop 한류를 중심으로 논의한다. 1990년대 말 이후 현재까지 이어지고 있는 한국 대중문화의 해외 진출 현상인 한류는 그동안 많은 주목을 받아왔다. 지역적으로는 1990년대 후반 동아시아로부터 시작해 전 세계로 퍼져나가고 있으며, 해당 분야도 TV드라마와 K-pop에서 시작해 영화, 게임, 패션, 뷰티 등으로 확산하고 있다. 무시할 수 없는 글로벌 대중문화 현상인 한류는 베트남에서도 큰 호응을 받아왔다. 베트남에서 한류는 1997년 TV드라마의 방영을 시작으로 방송뿐만 아니라 대중음악, 영화 등 분야로 확산돼 왔다. 동남아시아의 부상하는 인구 대국이자 경제개발 도상국인 베트남은 외세의 침탈에 수난을 당한 역사적 경험과 사회주의 이념을 내세우는 정권이 통치하는 국가라는 특수성 때문에 외국 문화의 수용에 폐쇄적이거나 소극적이었다. 그럼에도 한류가 붐을 일으키며 대중문화 양상을 바꾸고 있을 뿐만 아니라 한류 팬을 중심으로 라이프스타일에까지 영향을 미치는 주요한 문화로 자리 잡아 가고 있다. 특히 근래 큰 영향을 미치고 있는 K-pop은 온라인을 통한 K-pop의 소비만이 아니라 한류 가수들의 현지 공연으로 한류 팬을 확보하는 차원을 넘어서서, 베트남 대중음악에도 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. K-pop의 음악 및 안무, 패션 등을 모방하는 V-pop 가수들이 등장하고 있고 심지어 노골적인 표절로 문제가 된 사례도 나타나고 있다. 이와 함께 K-pop 공연의 영향으로 베트남 공연의 수준향상도 나타나고 있고 베트남 가수가 한국에서 공연을 펼치는 양국 간 교류로 확대되고 있다. 이처럼 베트남에서 한류가 호응을 얻으며 지속되고 있는 것은 한류 콘텐츠의 우수성뿐만 아니라 선진 문화에 대한 동경, 베트남의 유교적 전통 및 가족 중심주의 등 한국과의 문화적 유사성 등에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 여기에 양국 관계가 경제적, 정치적, 문화적으로 더욱 긴밀해지면서 한류와 기타 관계가 서로 순방향의 영향을 미치는 단계로 접어든 것으로 보인다. 주제어 : 한류, 현지화, K-pop, V-pop, 문화교류, 베트남문화.
