        Large deformation analysis of inflated air-spring shell made of rubber-textile cord composite

        This paper deals with the mechanical behaviour of the thin-walled cylindrical air-spring shell (CAS) made of rubber-textile cord composite (RCC) subjected to different types of loading. An orthotropic hyperelastic constitutive model is presented which can be applied to numerical simulation for the response of biological soft tissue and of the nonlinear anisotropic hyperelastic material of the CAS used in vibroisolation of driver's seat. The parameters of strain energy function of the constitutive model are fitted to the experimental results by the nonlinear least squares method. The deformation of the inflated CAS is calculated by solving the system of five first-order ordinary differential equations with the material constitutive law and proper boundary conditions. Nonlinear hyperelastic constitutive equations of orthotropic composite material are incorporated into the finite strain analysis by finite element method (FEM). The results for the deformation analysis of the inflated CAS made of RCC are given. Numerical results of principal stretches and deformed profiles of the inflated CAS obtained by numerical deformation analysis are compared with experimental ones.

        Trends in prediabetes and diabetes prevalence and associated risk factors in Vietnamese adults

        OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is rapidly increasing in Vietnam, particularly among adults aged over 45 years. This study estimated trends in diabetes and prediabetes prevalence and determined risk factors in Vietnamese adults (over 45 years). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on data from an annual diabetes screening program among people aged 45-69 years in an urban city in central Vietnam (Da Nang). Joinpoint regression analyses were performed to calculate the annual percentage change and ptrend-values. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors. RESULTS: In total, 3,765 men and 9,149 women were included in this analysis. The age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in 2017 was 11.4% and 52.9%, respectively. The prevalence of diabetes was higher in men (15.1%) than in women (10.3%), but that of prediabetes was similar in both genders (53.4% vs. 52.8%). The prevalence of prediabetes significantly increased during the study period, whereas no upward or downward trend for diabetes was observed. The prevalence of obesity, abdominal obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia showed no obvious trend. Obesity, a high waist-to-hip ratio, hypertension, more severe abdominal obesity, and dyslipidemia were significantly associated with a higher risk of diabetes and prediabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes and prediabetes were more prevalent among people aged over 45 years than in the general population. Da Nang has experienced a marked increase in the prevalence of prediabetes. These findings have significant implications regarding the need for nationwide public health interventions and management aiming at diabetes prevention and control.

        A breakage model with different liquid properties for pressurized bubble columns in a homogeneous regime

        The bubble breakage rate in gas-liquid bubble columns increases for organic liquid and at high pressure. This study developed a breakage model that accounts for different liquid properties in gas-liquid pressurized bubble columns in the homogeneous regime. The Luo (1996), Lehr (2002), and Wang (2003) breakage models, which are widely used for the population balance equation (PBE) of bubble columns, were compared in terms of the total breakage rate, daughter size distribution, and computational time. The model with two empirical equations, modified from Luo’s breakage kernel, was proposed. One represented bubble deformation behavior in different liquid properties in terms of buoyancy, surface tension, and viscosity. The other considered the effect of operating pressure (or gas density) on the breakage rate. The modified model was compared with experimental data and a rigorous breakage model from the literature. The proposed breakage model shows good agreement with experimental data and computational efficiency. This breakage model is applicable for computational fluid dynamics with PBE in pressurized bubble columns with organic liquids.
