CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION IN JAPAN

An idea has been put forward that special schools should be reconstructed as special resource center, especially schools for the blind. The reason why the ratio of double certificated teachers in special schools is decreasing might be by Japanese segregated special education. Special education teacher can contribute much wider role to solve issues in mainstream school. The number of double certificated teacher should increase and contribute educational reform, that is INCLUSION.

Universities have been trying hard in order to help students learn more effectively. However, students' learning outcomes do not look like increasing accordingly. As we observe how students learn, we presume the main reason is not on lack of professors' teaching neither skills nor students' learning abilities, but rather on lack of students' attitudes to learning. In order to make sure if our assumption holds or not, we have been investigating the students' attitude by taking the approach of analyzing the lecture data and trying to find out useful knowledge. In this paper, we investigate correlations of students' achievements and their learning attitudes by analyzing the usage of words of students which appear in the answer-texts of their looking-back self/class-evaluation questionnaire. Precisely, we classify the words into 4 types based on the students' attitudes to learning, represented by the words. As a result of the study, we found that the students in the middle-achievement group have differences in their word-usages, whereas the high- and low-achievement students rather use ordinary words.

Purpose Vascular endothelial cells (ECs) are continuouslysubjected to mechanical forces such as fluid shear stress,stretching and hydrostatic pressure. The effect of hydrostaticpressure on EC responses has not been fully understoodcompared to that of the other two stimuli. The purpose ofthis study is to assess mechanical responses of ECs to thesemechanical stimuli. Methods Bovine aortic ECs were exposed to hydrostaticpressure of 50, 100, and 150 mmHg and fluid shear stressof 3 Pa in simultaneous or successive fashion. Immunofluorescencestaining of actin filaments and VEcadherin wasthen performed to observe cell morphology and cell-celljunctions, respectively. Results The results showed that ECs subjected to 50, 100,and 150 mmHg for 24 h elongated without predominantorientation and exhibited multilayered structure, whereassimultaneous application of 50 and 100 mmHg and 3 Pa for24 h induced marked elongation and orientation of ECsparallel to the direction of flow maintaining monolayerintegrity. This monolayer integrity was lost in ECs subjectedto 150 mmHg together with 3 Pa. A successive applicationof 100 mmHg for 24 h followed by 100 mmHg and 3 Pa for24 h, indicated that the loss of monolayer integrity due tohydrostatic pressure could not be retrieved by the followingsimultaneous application. Conclusions It can be concluded that physiological shearstress of 3 Pa is dominant to physiological hydrostatic pressureup to 100 mmHg, importantly suggesting the relativecontribution of physiological hydrostatic pressure and fluidshear stress to endothelial monolayer integrity.
The Japanese word for "word/language": with reference to Altaic equivalents

In this paper I discuss the etymology of the Japanese word kotoba(~kotonoha) ‘word/language’, which I believe is unique in its composition.It is historically a compound, consisting of koto ‘fact/word’ and ha ‘edge’. Previous etymological works have explained the reason for ‘edge’ only inadequately. In my view, the two components of the compound represent the relation between signifie and signifiant in Saussurean terms. The word kotoba has a double meaning in relation to form and meaning:it originally referred to ‘word as only a medium’, but soon added anothermeaning ‘word with a meaning’. In relation to koto and ha, we can find ananalogy in the traditional view on our two writing systems: mana and kana. Finally, I will refer to some Altaic equivalents for comparison, payingspecial attention to the semantic distinction among ‘word/language/tongue (body part)’. A tentative survey shows a general similarity between Turkic and Mongolic (‘word≠language=tongue’) in contrast with Tungusic(‘word= language≠tongue’). In this respect, Japanese and Korean seem to be close to the Tungusic type.
Detonation of accumulated gases in BWR nuclear steam tube

Accidental detonation waves in the pipeline systems of industrial plants, such as chemical and nuclear plant, are a threat of serious damages. In 2001, a steam pipeline was raptured due to detonation of radiolysis hydrogen and oxygen in Hamaoka No. 1 nuclear plant, and also a similar accident occurred overseas. After that, Japanese BWR owners, electric companies and plant engineering companies have investigated the whole processes form accumulation, combustion and destruction of pipe, and established a new guide line for designing the pipe system of the new plant and redesigning the existing plant[2]. This paper presents a part of the investigations of the detonation in the 90-degree bent pipes and its effect on the pipe structure.
