TOLEDANO, C.,WIEGNER, M.,GROß, S.,FREUDENTHALER, V.,GASTEIGER, J.,MÜ,LLER, D.,MÜ,LLER, T.,SCHLADITZ, A.,WEINZIERL, B.,TORRES, B.,O'NEILL, N. T. Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2011 Tellus. Series B, Chemical and physical meteorolog Vol.63 No.4
<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The SAMUM‐2 experiment took place in the Cape Verde islands in January–February 2008. The colocated ground‐based and airborne instruments allow the study of desert dust optical and microphysical properties in a closure experiment. The Meteorological Institute of the University of Munich deployed one sun‐sky photometer and two tropospheric lidar systems. A travelling AERONET‐Cimel sun‐sky radiometer was also deployed. During the measurement period the aerosol scenario over Cape Verde mostly consisted of a dust layer below 2 km and a smoke‐dust layer above 2–4 km a.s.l. The Saharan dust arrived at the site from the NE, whereas the smoke originated in the African equatorial region. This paper describes the main results of the Sun photometer observations, supported by lidar information. An analysis of the variations in the aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the range 340–1550 nm, the Ångström exponent, volume size distributions and single scattering albedo is presented. The aerosol mixtures are analysed by means of the fine mode fraction of the AOD provided by the sun‐sky inversion data and the Spectral Deconvolution Algorithm. The mean AOD (500 nm) was 0.31, with associated low Ångström exponent of 0.46. Several types of events were detected within the data set, with prevalence of dust or mixtures as characterized by the Ångström exponents of extinction and absorption and the fine mode fraction. Aerosol properties derived from sunphotometry were compared to in situ measurements of size distribution, effective radius and single scattering albedo.</P>
Microbial 2-Cys Peroxiredoxins: Insights into Their Complex Physiological Roles

The peroxiredoxins (Prxs) constitute a very large and highly conserved family of thiol-based peroxidases that has been discovered only very recently. We consider here these enzymes through the angle of their discovery, and of some features of their molecular and physiological functions, focusing on complex phenotypes of the gene mutations of the 2-Cys Prxs subtype in yeast. As scavengers of the low levels of $H_2O_2$ and as $H_2O_2$ receptors and transducers, 2-Cys Prxs have been highly instrumental to understand the biological impact of $H_2O_2$, and in particular its signaling function. 2-Cys Prxs can also become potent chaperone holdases, and unveiling the in vivo relevance of this function, which is still not established, should further increase our knowledge of the biological impact and toxicity of $H_2O_2$. The diverse molecular functions of 2-Cys Prx explain the often-hard task of relating them to peroxiredoxin genes phenotypes, which underscores the pleiotropic physiological role of these enzymes and complex biologic impact of $H_2O_2$.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic pathogen, often associated with nosocomial infections. Ten S. maltophilia were isolated from clinical samples during the period January 2021 and June 2022. Eight (80%) patients had cancer as a background disease and 2 patients had coronavirus disease 2019. A fatal outcome was recorded in 4 cases (40% of patients). All the isolates were susceptible to minocycline and levofloxacin. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and ceftazidime resistance rates were 20% and 40% respectively. Eight different patterns were observed by Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, only two isolates being clonally identical. The isolation of S. maltophilia in clinical settings requires the implementation of infection prevention measures.

Background and Purpose We aimed to determine the correlation between subjective evaluations of mood and cognitive functions by patients and informants, and the findings of a battery of neuropsychological tests. Methods We analyzed 74 subjects recruited from a general neurology clinic, comprising 37 patients with cognitive complaints and 37 informants (either relatives or caregivers in close contact with the patients). Four ordinal scales concerning recent memory, verbal expression, initiative, and mood were correlated with the findings of a series of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires using the tau b coefficient. Results The scores for the patients on the scales were most strongly correlated with scores on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), while the scores for the informants were most strongly correlated with scores on GDS-15, the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline, and the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). The most significant correlation was between the initiative scale from informants and FAQ (tau b=-0.591, p<0.001), and it was the only one that remained significant after correcting for multiple testing (p Holm=0.013). Conclusions Cognitive complaints from patients mainly reflect their mood, whilst informant reports mainly reflect both the functional ability and mood of the patients.

Aims: Current guidelines recommend the use of a basal-bolus insulin regimen in hospitalized patients with hyperglycemia or type 2 DM. In addition a simple strategy facilitating the reconciliation of medication on discharge can improve glycemic control post-discharge. With our study we want to test whether this better glycemic control is maintained over time. Methods: Our study is a prospective and observational study during routine clinical practice. It has been held in an Department of Internal Medicine during hospitalization, with follow-up visit at 3 months after discharge and followed up for 3 years. Study patients (30) were treated with a regimen of basal-bolus insulin during hospitalization and an adjustment of their antidiabetic treatment at discharge. As a control group we included patients(30) hospitalized with similar characteristics, treated with other regimen of insulin or oral antidiabetic agents and to which either no treatment adjustment is recommended at discharge. A follow-up to all patients at 3 months after discharge and again after 3 years I realize. Results: Comparing the study group with the control group we found no differences in baseline HbA1c (8,52%±0,81 vs 8,61%±0.72; p:0,652), age (67,7±3,76 vs 67,8±3,71; p:0,86), sex (16 male vs 17 mal) and BMI (30,33±1,62 Kg/m2 vs 30,41±1,63 Kg/m2). Compared with baseline, the HbA1c at 3 months after discharge is lowe r(7,51%±0.81 vs 8,52%±0,81;p:0,001) and 3 years after discharge also remains lower(7,81%±0,81vs8,52%±0,81; p:0,013). Compared with control subjects, patients included in study have lower HbA1c at 3 months after discharge (7,51%±0,81 vs 8,71% ± 0,81:p:0,004) and lower HbA1c at 3 years after discharge (7,81%±0,81 vs 8,91%±0,81; p:0,002). Conclusion: This study confi rm that protocols to manage hyperglycemia with basal-bolus insulin regimens are also feasible and effective in routine clinical practice, and demonstrate that a simple strategy facilitating the reconciliation of medication on discharge can improve glycemic control post-discharge, that remains after 3 years or follow.

<P>Experimental observations on the B4 phase of liquid crystal mixtures formed from bent-core (P-8-O-PIMB) and rod (5CB) achiral molecules reveal the stabilization of the B4 phase with an unusually large size of chiral domains. The phenomenon is interpreted as an intrinsic property of the B4 phase when arising below the isotropic liquid (Iso); actually direct transition between Iso and B4 phases occurs except for only very limited regions of pure P-8-O-PIMB and 5CB molecules. The phase diagram of the mixture shows the existence of a new phase, closely related to the B4 phase.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Experimental observations of liquid crystal mixtures formed from bent-core (P8-OPIMB) and rod (5CB) achiral molecules reveal the stabilization of the B4 phase with an unusually large size of chiral domains. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=b507875j'> </P>
