There is a difference in the inhibitory effects to supplemental UVB (wavelengths 280 to 320 nm) among Japanese rice (Oryza sativa L.), the cultivar Norin I is less resistant while the cultivar Sasanishiki is resistant. UVB induces photodamage in DNA. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) is a major UV-induced DNA lesion. Photorepair, which is mediated by photolyase, is the major pathway in plants for repairing CPD. We have analyzed CPD induction and repair in Sasanishiki and its close relative Norin I using alkaline agarose gel electrophoresis. Norin I is deficient in CPD photoreactivation and excision, thus UV sensitivity correlates with deficient dimer repair [I]. The photorepair deficiency in Norin I results from a functionally altered photolyase with a photoflash analysis [2]. In this paper, we examined the UVB-sensitivity of several other UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars and found that the CPD photolyase activity was deficient in UV-sensitive ones. It was also evident that there was a variation in the deduced amino acid sequences of CPD photolyases of the UV-sensitive and -resistant cultivars, whereas each deduced amino acid sequence of the UV-sensitive cultivars and of the UV-resistant ones was the same. These results suggest that the difference in the CPD photolyases of UV-sensitive and -resistant rice might be due to the structural alteration of CPD photolyase.
Optimal Macroprudential Policy for Korean Economy

Fujimoto et al. (2014) set up a model with financial frictions through search and matching between firms and banks in the loan market. They also show that optimal policy criteria in the model include terms of credit variables. In this paper, we calibrate the model of Fujimoto et al. (2014) for South Korea and investigate the simple and optimal monetary and macroprudential policy rules that include credit variables in addition to the consumption gap and inflation rate as explanatory variables. We compare the performances of a standard Taylor rule and these optimal rules. Numerical simulations show that the simple macroprudential and monetary policy rules with credit terms can induce higher welfare than the estimated Taylor rule for the Korean economy. Simultaneously, simple macroprudential and monetary policy rules with credit terms do not always improve welfare.

Barium titanate ($BaTiO_3$) nanoparticle is one of the most promising materials for future multi-layer ceramic capacitor and ferroelectric random access memory. It is well known that electrical property of nanoparticles depends on the atomistic structure. Although surface may possibly have an impact on the atomistic structure, reconstructed structure at the surface has not been widely investigated. In the present study, Ba-ion position near surface in a $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticle has been quantitatively characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that some Ba ions at the surface were greatly displaced in non-uniform directions.
A new structure for a magnetic field concentrator using NbTi sheet superconductors
Zhang, Z.Y.,Matsumoto, S.,Choi, S.,Teranishi, R.,Kiyoshi, T. North-Holland 2011 Physica. C, Superconductivity Vol.471 No.21
The magnetic lens, a new device for concentrating magnetic flux using the diamagnetism of superconductors, has been experimentally confirmed by employing HTS bulk. In this paper, a new magnetic lens made of NbTi/Cu rings is introduced. The rings, which have identical outer diameters and increasing inner diameters, were stacked to form a hollow cone. Each ring has a slit to suppress the circumference current. The slits were placed in the same position to form a leakage path. The lens was assembled in an existing cryostat system with a NbTi magnet, and the magnetic properties were measured. The concentrated magnetic flux density rose to 0.618T when the background field reached 0.339T at the tip of the lens. The concentration ratio was 1.82. These experimental results agree well with the numerical results.
