Selection of the Lowest Instrumented Vertebra and Relative Odds Ratio of Distal Adding-on for Lenke Type 1A and 2A Curves in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Che-Wei Liu,Lawrence G. Lenke,Lee A. Tan,Taemin Oh,Kou-Hua Chao,Shi-Ding Lin,Ru-Yu Pan 대한척추신경외과학회 2020 Neurospine Vol.17 No.4

Objective: To examine existing literature and pool the data to determine the relative odds ratio of “adding-on” (AO) based on various reported criteria for lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves. Methods: Using electronic databases, studies reporting on AO and LIV selection in Lenke type 1A and 2A curves were identified. Studies were excluded if they failed to meet the following criteria: ≥30 patients, Lenke type 1A or 2A curves, thoracic-only fusions, and inclusion of outcome differences in AO and non-AO groups. Review articles, letters, and case reports were excluded. Results: Six studies were identified reporting on 732 patients with either Lenke type 1A or 2A curves treated with thoracic-only fusions. Five different landmarks were used for LIV selection in these studies including the stable vertebra (SV) -1, end vertebra (EV) +1, neutral vertebra (NV), touched vertebra (TV), and substantially touched vertebra (STV) versus nonsubstantially touched vertebra (nSTV) +1. The pooled odds ratios of AO for choosing LIV at levels above the afore landmarks (i.e., ending the construct “short”) versus at the landmarks were 2.59 (SV-1), 2.43 (EV+1), 3.05 (NV), 3.40 (TV), and 4.52 (STV/nSTV+1), all at 95% confidence interval. Conclusion: Five landmarks shared a similar characteristic in that the incidence of AO was significantly higher if the LIV was proximal to the chosen landmark. In addition, choosing STV/(nSTV+1) as the LIV have the lowest absolute risk of AO and the greatest risk reduction. If additional levels were fused (i.e., LIV distal to the landmark), there was no statistically significant benefit in further reducing the risk of AO. Selection of the optimal LIV is a complex issue and spine surgeons must balance the risk of AO with the need for motion preservation in young patients.

Methyl jasmonate induced responses in four plant species and its effect on Spodoptera litura Fab. performance

        Ching-Wen Tan,Shaw-Yhi Hwang,Ju-Che Lo,Jitendra Yadav,Kaliova Tavou Ravuiwasa 한국응용곤충학회 2011 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.14 No.3

Defensive proteins, such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and trypsin inhibitor (TI), are induced by herbivore wounding and exogenous methyl jasmonate application in various plant species. This study was conducted to measure induction of PPO and TI in radish, sweet pepper, tomato, and water spinach plants following herbivore wounding (I), methyl jasmonate application (M), and a combination of the two treatments (M+I). The effect of induced responses was also examined against third instar Spodoptera litura Fab. PPO activity was induced in radish by treatment I only; in sweet pepper, by treatments I and M; in tomato, by treatments I, M,and M+I; and in water spinach, by treatments M and M+I. The activity of TI was enhanced 1.2–1.4-fold in radish, sweet pepper, and tomato by M and M+I treatments, whereas in water spinach, it was enhanced 1.2-fold by all 3 treatments. The relative growth rate (RGR) of S. litura was reduced by 53% on radish plants following M treatment only. It was reduced by 37% and 42% on sweet paper plants following M and M+I treatment, respectively. RGR was significantly reduced on test tomato plants following I, M, and M+I treatments. The RGR of S. litura was unaffected on water spinach plants following any treatment. Collectively, the results of this study indicated that induction of plant defensive proteins in response to S. litura feeding or exogenous methyl jasmonate application varied among plant species, which further affected the induced plant resistance to the caterpillars.

Design of LLCL Filter for Single Phase Inverters with Confined Band Variable Switching Frequency (CB-VSF) PWM

        Hussain A. Attia,Tan Kheng Suan Freddy,Hang Seng Che,Ahmad H. El Khateb 전력전자학회 2019 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.19 No.1

Recently, the use of LLCL filters for grid inverters has been suggested to give better harmonic attenuation than the commonlyused L and LCL filters, particularly around the switching frequency. Nevertheless, this filter is mainly designed for constantswitching frequency pulse width modulation (CSF PWM) methods. In variable switching frequency PWM (VSF PWM), theharmonic components are distributed across a wide frequency band which complicates the use of a high order filter, includingLCL and LLCL filters. Recently, a confined band variable switching frequency (CB-VSF) PWM method has been proposed anddemonstrated to be superior to the conventional constant switching frequency (CSF) PWM in terms of switching losses. However, the applicability of LLCL filters for this type of CB-VSF PWM has not been discussed. In this paper, the authors study thesuitability of an LLCL filter for CB-VSF PWM and propose design guidelines for the filter parameters. Using simulation andexperimental results, it is demonstrated that the effectiveness of an LLCL filter with CB-VSF PWM depends on the parametersof the filters as well as the designed variable frequency band of the PWM. Simulation results confirm the performance of thesuggested LLCL design, which is further validated using a lab scale prototype.

Evaluating Permeability and Efficiency of Substrates by Using Permeation Grouting Sand Column Test

        Jen-Chen Fan,Wen-Yao Liu,Che-Hsin Liu,Chien-Lin Huang,Yun-Wei Tan,Jia-Jun Guo 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.8

This study design the sand column tests in the laboratory to evaluate permeability and efficiency of substrates by using permeationgrouting technology. The results show, the coarser the test sand and the lower the substrates viscosity, the better the grouting effect. Ifmore than 5% fines added will affect the grouting results significantly. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and stepwiseregression method were applied to analysis 36 sets of sand columns testing results. The relationships among the effective size of testsand (D10), the viscosity of substrates and grouting height, grouting time, grouting rate and outflow rate were obtained. The results ofthis study might be helpful for applying the permeation grouting technology to remedy the contaminated groundwater in the field.

Food security and diet quality among urban poor adolescents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Janice Ee Fang Tay,Satvinder Kaur,Wui Wui Tham,Wan Ying Gan,Nik Norasma Che Ya,Choon Hui Tan,Serene En Hui Tung 한국영양학회 2023 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.17 No.2

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the food security status of urban poor adolescents and its association with diet quality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 188 adolescents aged 13–18 yrs living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Household food insecurity and dietary intake data were collected using the Radimer/Cornell hunger and food insecurity instrument and 2-day 24-h dietary recalls, respectively. Diet quality was determined using the Malaysian Healthy Eating Index (HEI). Weight and height were measured and body mass index-for-age, as well as height-for-age z scores were calculated. RESULTS: The present study revealed that 47.9% of the adolescents experienced household food insecurity, 24.5% experienced individual food insecurity, 18.6% household food security, and 9.0% child hunger. The mean score of diet quality was 56.83 ± 10.09, with a significantly lower HEI score among food insecure adolescents (household food insecure, individual food insecure, and child hunger) than household food secure adolescents (P = 0.001). The differences between food secure and food insecure households were found to be significant for energy (P = 0.001) and nutrients including proteins (P = 0.006), carbohydrates (P = 0.005), dietary fiber (P = 0.001), folate (P < 0.001), and vitamin C (P = 0.006). The multiple linear regression showed that adolescents who experienced food insecurity (β = −0.328; P = 0.003) were found to be significantly associated with poor diet quality (F = 2.726; P < 0.01), wherein 13.3% of the variation in the diet quality was explained by the food security status. CONCLUSIONS: Experiencing food insecurity contributed to poor diet quality among urban poor adolescents. Further longitudinal studies are needed to comprehensively understand this association to improve food insecurity and diet quality among urban poor communities.
