Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumor composed of cancellous or compact bone, classified as peripheral, central, or extraskeletal. Peripheral osteomas are uncommon. Excluding the maxillary sinuses, the maxilla is a rare site for osteomas. The purpose of this report was to describe clinicopathological and radiological features of two peripheral osteomas occurring in the jaws, one located in the mandible and another in the edentulous maxillary alveolar ridge. The tumors were asymptomatic and were fully excised without any complications or recurrence. The lesions were submitted to histopathological analysis and diagnosed as peripheral osteoma, compact type.

Talita B. de Almeida,Vera LR. Zotelli,Ronaldo S. Wada,Maria L.R. Sousa 사단법인약침학회 2019 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.12 No.6
The aim of this study was to assess whether the effectiveness of acupuncture is similar to the use of analgesics in the management of toothache. The research included 56 volunteers who were divided into 4 groups: Real Acupuncture group, Placebo Acupuncture group, Real Dipyrone group, and Placebo Dipyrone group. The interventions of the study were performed before the dental care. Inclusion criteria were toothache of pulpal origin with pain scale (Visual Analogue Scale) above 4, absence of medication for the pain, and aged over 18 years. The Real Acupuncture volunteers received a session of acupuncture using piercing needles, while volunteers from the Placebo Acupuncture group received an acupuncture session using non-piercing sham needles. Volunteers from the Real Dipyrone group received a dipyrone tablet and the Placebo Acupuncture group received a tablet with no active ingredient. Before any therapeutic intervention, we collected samples from the volunteers’ saliva to analyze the salivary cortisol, the volunteers rated the intensity of their pain using VAS, and we measured their energy level by the Ryodoraku method. After 20 minutes of treatment, all the volunteers’ analysis parameters were collected again. The Real Acupuncture group presented a greater reduction of VAS than the reduction obtained by the Real Dipyrone group (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups for the salivary cortisol and energy level variables. It can be concluded that acupuncture was more effective in reducing odontalgia than the dipyrone and that it can be an alternative for odontalgia management.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate three different degrees of white striping (WS) addressing their automatic assessment and customer acceptance. The WS classification was performed based on a computer vision system (CVS), exploring different machine learning (ML) algorithms and the most important image features. Moreover, it was verified by consumer acceptance and purchase intent. Methods: The samples for image analysis were classified by trained specialists, according to severity degrees regarding visual and firmness aspects. Samples were obtained with a digital camera, and 25 features were extracted from these images. ML algorithms were applied aiming to induce a model capable of classifying the samples into three severity degrees. In addition, two sensory analyses were performed: 75 samples properly grilled were used for the first sensory test, and 9 photos for the second. All tests were performed using a 10-cm hybrid hedonic scale (acceptance test) and a 5-point scale (purchase intention). Results: The information gain metric ranked 13 attributes. However, just one type of image feature was not enough to describe the phenomenon. The classification models support vector machine, fuzzy-W, and random forest showed the best results with similar general accuracy (86.4%). The worst performance was obtained by multilayer perceptron (70.9%) with the high error rate in normal (NORM) sample predictions. The sensory analysis of acceptance verified that WS myopathy negatively affects the texture of the broiler breast fillets when grilled and the appearance attribute of the raw samples, which influenced the purchase intention scores of raw samples. Conclusion: The proposed system has proved to be adequate (fast and accurate) for the classification of WS samples. The sensory analysis of acceptance showed that WS myopathy negatively affects the tenderness of the broiler breast fillets when grilled, while the appearance attribute of the raw samples eventually influenced purchase intentions.

Zn-Mg alloys are considered to have potential application in bone implants, since both metals are biocompatible and have biodegradable characteristics. Adding Mg to Zn can boost mechanical and corrosion resistances. However, the literature is very limited on quantifying the interrelation of solidification parameters, microstructural features and mechanical/corrosion properties of Zn-Mg alloys. The present study examines the interrelations of alloy Mg content, macrosegregation effects, morphology and scale of the matrix and eutectic phases, nature of intermetallics and tensile and corrosion properties of near-eutectic Zn-Mg alloys. The alloys samples are obtained by unsteady-state directional solidification resulting in a wide range of solidification thermal parameters and microstructures. We examine microstructural features of both dendritic and complex regular eutectic phases. It is shown that the eutectic exhibits a bimodal pattern with neighboring areas of coarse and fine lamellae. Experimental growth laws relating the primary, secondary and eutectic spacings to the solidification cooling rate and growth rate are proposed. Hall-Petch type equations are derived expressing tensile strength and elongation to dendritic and eutectic spacings. Electrochemical parameters determined by polarization curves during corrosion tests and SEM analyses of corroded areas have shown that the alloy having an essentially eutectic microstructure is associated with better corrosion resistance.

Canine mesenchymal cells (MSCs) derived from Wharton’s jelly were co-cultured, then supplemented or not supplemented with platelet richplasma (PRP) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) to verify osteogenic differentiation. Osteoblastic differentiation followed by mineralizedbone matrix production was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) when MSCs were associated with PRP/DBM in culture after 14–21-days of induction. Osteopontin and osteocalcin gene expression were significantly superior (p < 0.05) under the same culture conditionsafter 21 days of observation. In conclusion, addition of PRP to DBM co-cultured with MSCs successfully induced osteogenesis in vitro.

Al–Cu–Ni alloys are of scientifi c and technological interest due to high strength/high temperature applications, based on thereinforcement originated from the interaction between the Al-rich phase and intermetallic composites. The nature, morphology, size, volume fraction and dispersion of IMCs particles throughout the Al-rich matrix are important factors determiningthe resulting mechanical and chemical properties. The present work aims to evaluate the effect of the addition of 1wt%Ni intoAl–5wt%Cu and Al–15wt%Cu alloys on the solidification rate, macrosegregation, microstructure features and the interrelationsof such characteristics on tensile and corrosion properties. A directional solidification technique is used permitting awide range of microstructural scales to be examined. Experimental growth laws relating the primary and secondary dendriticspacings to growth rate and solidification cooling rate are proposed, and Hall–Petch type equations are derived relating theultimate tensile strength and elongation to the primary dendritic spacing. Considering a compromise between ultimate tensilestrength and corrosion resistance of the examined alloys samples from both alloys castings it is shown that the sampleshaving more refined microstructures are associated with the highest values of such properties.

<P>Epigenetic regulation of imprinted genes is regarded as a highly plausible explanation for linking dietary exposures in early life with the onset of diseases during childhood and adulthood. We sought to test whether prenatal dietary supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during pregnancy may modulate epigenetic states at birth. This study was based on a randomized intervention trial conducted in Mexican pregnant women supplemented daily with 400 mg of DHA or a placebo from gestation <I>week 18–22</I> to parturition. We applied quantitative profiling of DNA methylation states at <I>IGF2</I> promoter 3 (<I>IGF2</I> P3), <I>IGF2</I> differentially methylated region (DMR), and <I>H19</I> DMR in cord blood mononuclear cells of the DHA-supplemented group (<I>n</I> = 131) and the control group (<I>n</I> = 130). In stratified analyses, DNA methylation levels in <I>IGF2</I> P3 were significantly higher in the DHA group than the control group in preterm infants (<I>P</I> = 0.04). We also observed a positive association between DNA methylation levels and maternal body mass index; <I>IGF2</I> DMR methylation was higher in the DHA group than the control group in infants of overweight mothers (<I>P</I> = 0.03). In addition, at <I>H19</I> DMR, methylation levels were significantly lower in the DHA group than the control group in infants of normal weight mothers (<I>P</I> = 0.01). Finally, methylation levels at <I>IGF2/H19</I> imprinted regions were associated with maternal BMI. These findings suggest that epigenetic mechanisms may be modulated by DHA, with potential impacts on child growth and development.</P>

Flavonoids—compounds abundant in balanced daily diets—have been extensively investigated for biological activity. The pronounced antiproliferative effects of flavonoids have prompted studies to elucidate their mode of action against tumor cells. The anticancer properties of myricetin, a 3′,4′,5′-tri-hydroxylated flavonol, have been confirmed for a number of neoplasms, but myricitrin, its 3-O-rhamnoside derivative found in fruits and other parts of edible plants, has been scarcely investigated as a chemopreventive agent. This study evaluated the antiproliferative potential of myricitrin obtained from Combretum lanceolatum (Combretaceae) against MCF7 (breast), PC-3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), 786-0 (kidney), and HL-60 (acute promyelocytic leukemia) cancer cell lines, using the sulforhodamine B and tetrazolium salt assays. Myricitrin proved most effective in inhibiting growth of HL-60 cells (GI50 = 53.4 μmol·L−1), yet showed weak antiproliferative activity against other cell lines. Possible cytotoxic mechanisms involving inhibition of topoisomerases I and IIα by myricitrin were also evaluated, revealing inhibitory activity only against topoisomerase IIα. The results suggested that topoisomerase IIα inhibition is the probable mechanism responsible for the antiproliferative activity of myricitrin. In vivo mutagenicity by myricitrin and its possible antimutagenic effect on doxorubicin-induced DNA damage were also investigated by performing the somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) on Drosophila melanogaster. Myricitrin proved nonmutagenic to the offspring of standard (ST) and high-bioactivation (HB) crosses, while cotreatments with doxorubicin revealed the antimutagenic properties of myricitrin, even under conditions of high metabolic activation.
