α-Amino Acid Pendant Polymers as Endosomal pH-Responsive Gene Carriers

In order to prepare gene carriers responsive to an endosomal pH, amino groups of linear poly(allylamine)(PAA) or poly(L-lysine) (PLL) were coupled with a-carboxyl groups of α-amino acids (Gly, His, Lys, Arg, and Orn). Acid-base titration indicated that Lys-, Arg-, and Orn-pendant polymers had both strongly basic groups and endosomal pH-responsive α-amino groups. These polymers, like PAA and PLL, formed stable complexes with DNA. Lys-,Arg-, and Orn-pendant polymers were effective transfection reagents independent of the backbone polymers. The pH-responsive α-amino groups enhanced transfection activity as shown by the observation that acetylation of the α-amino group resulted in a considerable loss in transfection activity. These results strongly suggested a lysosomotropic activity of the α-amino groups. Among the α-amino acid-pendant polymers tested, the Orn-pendant polymer exhibited the highest transfection activity/toxicity index. Since PLL with α-amino acid-pendants is composed of naturally occurring amino acids, it is expected to be biodegradable, and these reagents have promise as gene carriers.
Contemporary Falconry in Altai-Kazakh in Western Mongolia

A classical form of ‘eagle falconry’ is still practiced in theAltai-Kazakh community of Bayan-Ölgii (Баян-Өлгий)Prefecture in western Mongolia. Their form of falconry isunique in that they use female golden eagles, they hunt onhorseback and foxes are the main prey. This makes itdifferent from any other type of falconry in Asia or Europeand for this reason it is regarded as a form of intangiblecultural heritage. However, little is known about thespecific cultural context in which this activity is practicedand no serious scientific research has hitherto beenconducted into it. The author carried out anthropologicalresearch in the Altai-Kazakh community from July 2011 toJanuary 2012 with financial support from the TakanashiFoundation for Arts and Archaeology. This research wasbased on close observation of the hunters, interviews, andthe author’s own experience of taming a golden eagle atSagsai (Сагсаи) Village. The findings support the view thatthis type of falconry is indeed a unique form of intangiblecultural heritage. In addition, the fact that the practice ofhunting foxes with eagles has declined in recent years,suggests that we should now take action to safeguard thepractice and preserve it for the future. This paper reportsthe preliminary results of research undertaken in thesummer of 2011.

Proposed in this study and fabricated on a glass substrate without adopting impurity doping were p-channel polycrystalline silicon (Si) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a metal source/drain (S/D) electrode. The amorphous 50-nm-thick Si films deposited on a glass substrate via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition were polycrystallized using blue laser diode annealing. Gold (Au), a highwork- function metal, was evaporated for the S/D electrode directly onto the Si channel layer. As a result of the TFT formation, the typical Id–Vg characteristics of the p-channel TFT were successfully obtained. In addition, after hydrogenation at 200°C, the drain current drastically increased. The 14 cm2/Vs effective field effect hole mobility was deduced at the drain voltage of −1V.

The modeling of driving behaviors is important to analyze and design comfortable functions for the driving systems. The estimation method of the non-linear steering model using the eye tracking information was studied using the heuristic search algorithm. However, the model was limited to gaze and the inattentive driving was not modeled. It is considered that the steering model is consists of a hybrid steering model that switches the controllers according to the eye tracking information is classified in the effective/peripheral viewing field. In this paper, an estimation method of the hybrid system focusing on the effective visual field during driving is proposed. The hybrid model is constructed by steering model depending on the gazing distance and simple on-off controller. This estimation algorithm consists of 2-steps; clustering which classifies data by k-means method and the estimation of the parameters by Particle Swarm Optimization. The experiment with the long driving course consisting of five-curves and straight lines is demonstrated by HONDA driving simulator.

Recent transcriptome analyses have shown that long non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play prevalent roles in transcriptional regulation. We have reported that promoter-associated ncRNAs (pancRNAs) activate the partner gene expression via local epigenetic changes. Here, we identify thousands of genes under the pancRNA-mediated transcriptional regulation in five mammalian species in common. In the mouse, 1) pancRNA-partnered genes show tissue-specific expression pattern, 2) expression of pancRNAs significantly enriched H3K4me3 and H3K27ac marks towards the partner gene expression, 3) H3K4me1 marks the pancRNA-partnered genes regardless of their expression level, and 4) C- or G-skewed motifs were exclusively overrepresented between -200 and -1 bp relative to the transcription start sites of pancRNA-partnered genes. More importantly, the comparative transcriptome analysis among five different mammalian species using a total of 25 counterpart tissues showed that overall pancRNA expression profile exhibited extremely high species-specificity compared to that of mRNA, suggesting that a significant number of pancRNAs contributed to the enhancement of a set of partner genes' expression in a sequence-specific manner. We conclude that the gain and/or loss of gene-activation-associated pancRNA repertories, caused by formation or disorganization of the genomic GC-skewed structure, finely shapes tissue-specific pattern of gene expression according to a given species.
Mathematical Programming of City and Urban Traffic

This paper deals with mathematical programming model of city and urban traffic. The aim of our research is to acquire ideal images of city and urban traffic. To achieve the aim, we propose optimization models which consist of city, mobilities and inhabitants. Two kinds of models distinguished by accuracy and computation time are proposed. One is relatively accurate but takes a lot of time to compute. The other is less accurate, however, larger size instances can be computed. To confirm the proposed models, several scenarios which have extreme conditions are examined.
The generalized Cucconi test statistic for the two-sample problem

When testing hypotheses in two-sample problem, the Lepage test statistic is often used to jointly test the location and scale parameters, and this test statistic has been discussed by many authors over the years. Since two-sample nonparametric testing plays an important role in biometry, the Cucconi test statistic is generalized to the location, scale, and location–scale parameters in two-sample problem. The limiting distribution of the suggested test statistic is derived under the hypotheses. Deriving the exact critical value of the test statistic is difficult when the sample sizes are increased. A gamma approximation is used to evaluate the upper tail probability for the proposed test statistic given finite sample sizes. The asymptotic efficiencies of the proposed test statistic are determined for various distributions. The consistency of the original Cucconi test statistic is shown on the specific cases. Finally, the original Cucconi statistic is discussed in the theory of ties.
