h-index, h-type Indices, and the Role of Corrected Quality Ratio

Tahira, Muzammil,Alias, Rose Alinda,Bakri, Arayti,Shabri, Ani Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2014 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.2 No.4

This study examines the foremost concerns related to most noted research performance index. The most popular and widely acceptable h-index underestimates the highly visible scientist, the middle order group, due to citation distribution issues. The study addresses this issue and uses 'Corrected Quality Ratio' (CQ) to check the implicit underpinnings as evident in h-index. CQ helps to incorporate the aspects of a good research performance indicator. This simple revision performs more intimately and logically to gauge the broader research impact for all groups and highly visible scientists with less statistical error.

      • Harassment of Women in Pakistan under the guise of Legal and Cultural Practices

Tahira Khan 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2016 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2016 No.7

The paper will present the very common problems which are faced by every kind of women in Pakistan. It will highlight the problems of those women who are victims of legal and cultural practices in Pakistan. This paper is based on my research work which I have conducted in district level courts and rural/urban areas of Punjab (Pakistan). This paper will make a connection of women empowerment and economic empowerment and how women exploited by the males of the society. The paper will not just highlight the exploitation of women by men; it will also show the exploitation of women by the women. I would highlight the legal issues of property, divorce and “Hudood” cases and how women become a toy of legal and social/cultural institutions of our society. Based on my work experience in my organization, including field cases I will present case studies which will elucidate how I approached problems and concerns at individual and institutional levels. In the end I would present the consequences which are the outcome of this harassment. The issue addressed in this paper is harassment of women ensuing out of legal and popular cultural practices. The focus of my paper is Zina and Divorce cases. The rationale of using both types of cases was involvement of women in both. Both men and women are and can be subjected to harassment of various types in any society, ours being no exception. The current research however looks into harassment of women and that too within legal culture and in spaces where it interfaces with popular culture. Till very recent law was considered gender neutral (which it is not). Of late there is a controversy around this issue. The legal and social science argument around gender discrimination in legal culture have theoretical as well as policy implications. Before going any further the term harassment needs to be defined. According to the Oxford illustrated Dictionary “Harassment means vex by repeated attacks, trouble and worry”. According to the Berit Backer by “Patriarchy” We mean a community which systematically acknowledges male rights and authority above those of women” (Backer, 1983; p. 53)

Mixing of Isaria fumosorosea with enhanced diatomaceous earth and bitterbarkomycin for control of Rhyzopertha dominica

        Tahira Riasat,Waqas Wakil,Muhammad YASIN,권용정 한국곤충학회 2013 Entomological Research Vol.43 No.4

The virulence of Isaria fumosorosea alone and integrated with an enhanced formulation of diatomaceous earth (diatomaceous earth + bitterbarkomycin, DEBBM) was tested against the lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) under laboratory conditions on stored wheat. The fungus was applied to wheat grains at various concentrations of 3.60 × 106, 3.60 × 108, and 3.60 × 1010 conidia/kg alone, or in combination with 15 and 30 ppm of DEBBM. R. dominica was held at 20, 25 and 30°C and two RH regimes (56 and 75%) and mortality was registered after 5, 10 and 15 d. Generally, I. fumosorosea was most effective at 25°C caused the highest mortality of R. dominica at 56% RH. The increase of temperature, concentration and exposure interval increased the insecticidal effect of DEBBM at low RH level. The DE alone suppressed the progeny emergence at higher dose rate as compared I. fumosorosea alone, but their simultaneous use further reduced the progeny production of R. dominica. The integrated use of both tested bio control agents synergized the effect of each other and caused the highest mortality at 25°C and 56% RH. The results clearly demonstrated that I. fumosorosea and new enhanced DEBBM can be integrated to be an effective control measure for R. dominica in stored wheat.

A Study of the Thermal Properties of Nano-crystalline Binary Oxides Prepared by Co-precipitation Method

        Tahira Amer Bashir Ziya,Muhammad Naeem Ashiq,고재현,Farooq Bashir,Ghulam Shabbir 한국물리학회 2020 새물리 Vol.70 No.2

The Thermal properties of nano-crystalline CeO2, FeO, MgO, Ho2O3, NiO and Y2O3, prepared by using the co-precipitation method, have been investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) at room temperature. The integrated intensity data obtained from the X-ray diffraction experiments was utilized to determine the temperature factor (B(T)), mean square amplitude of vibration (u2(T)), Debye temperature (D), melting point (Tm) and activation energy for vacancy formation (Ef ). The values of (B(T)) and (u2(T)) in the present case were found to be large while the values of D and Ef were found to be lower than the corresponding values reported for the binary oxides with large particle sizes. This suggests that a decrease in particle size from micro to nano-scale may induce weakening of the bonds. On a nano-scale as compared to ordinary size, the values of the melting points were found be higher for the heavier atomic oxides.

      • Digital Technology Practices and Vaccine Campaign in Korea: International Perceptions on Health Diplomacy amid COVID-19 Crisis

Tahira, Iffat World Association for Triple Helix and Future Stra 2022 Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia Vol.21 No.2

The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, to discuss the concept of health diplomacy and the Korean government's response to contain the COVID-19 pandemic; second, to assess and compare assumptions of variances about foreigners' perceptions of how Korea is leveraging digital technology in battling the coronavirus spread, and its vaccine campaign; through the lenses of Chinese, Filipino, and Pakistani foreign nationals who are currently living in Korea. A total of 219 foreigners responded to the survey. The collected data were analyzed as percentages, mean averages, t-test, and ANOVA for statistical analysis. Results show that Korea is utilizing its digital technology practices and vaccine campaign in battling the pandemic through efforts of health diplomacy. ANOVA indicated significant results and assumptions of variance across three ethnic groups showing the Pakistani population had higher mean scores than the Chinese and Filipino about Korea's health diplomacy during the pandemic. This study contributes to the literature on Korea's digital technology practices and vaccine campaigns amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by promoting its image through health diplomacy efforts. It projects the country's soft image on a global scale, to save the lives of locals and foreign nationals, by providing insights into health diplomacy in Korea.

Exogenous Silicon Application Alleviates Salt Stress in Okra

        Tahira Abbas,Abdul Sattar,Muhammad Ijaz,Muhammad Aatif,Samina Khalid,Ahmad Sher 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.4

Salt stress is known to adversely affect a variety of processes in plants, inhibiting growth and decreasingcrop yield. Silicon (Si) protects plants against a variety of environmental stresses. In the present study, seedlings oftwo genotypes of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench; salt-tolerant OH-713 and salt-sensitive Okra-7080) weresubjected to four treatments; control (no NaCl or Si added), only Si (150 mg·L-1Si), only salinity (6.0 dS·m-1), orsalinity + Si, to observe their response at the morphological, physiological, and enzymatic level. The application ofSi in stressed okra cultivars led to significant improvements, including increasing the leaf area and leaf area index, decreasing the leaf water potential and osmotic potential, and enhancing the turgor potential and relative watercontents. It also increased the activity of the enzymatic antioxidants ascorbate peroxidase and guaiacol peroxidase, aswell as increasing nitrate reductase levels and activity. The suppressed concentrations of calcium (Ca) and magnesium(Mg) ions under salt stress were alleviated by the application of Si. The results of the current investigationsuggested that Si confers salt tolerance to okra, potentially by enhancing their water status, improving antioxidantactivity, and enhancing nitrogen metabolism.

Potential of PVA templated Silica Xerogels as Adsorbents for Rhodamine 6G

Pirzada, Tahira,Shah, Syed Sakhawat Korean Chemical Society 2011 대한화학회지 Vol.55 No.6

PVA/silica hybrid xerogels were synthesized by sonohydrolysis of a mixture of 2-way catalyzed TEOS and water solution of PVA. PVA was successfully removed from the xerogels through calcination and its removal was confirmed through TGA analysis of the calcined gel. Microstructure of the gels was studied through SEM, XRD and FTIR. Nitrogen sorption studies were conducted to find out surface area of different samples. It was found out that the samples having PVA removed through calcinations have higher surface area (411.64 $m^2$/g) than the samples (353.544 $m^2$/g) synthesized without any PVA. Adsorption properties of these xerogels synthesized by using different ratios of components were studied by taking Rhodamine G6 as a model adsorbate. The experiments were conducted at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). UV visible spectroscopy was used to measure the concentration of the dye before and after adsorption. The adsorption data of Rhodamine G6 on PVA modified silica is described by the Freundlich's adsorption model.

      • Cultural Tourism Development between Korea and Pakistan

        Iffat Tahira,Isra Sarwar,Saira Khan,Aman Ullah 한양대학교 유럽-아프리카연구소 2021 글로벌 거버넌스와 문화 Vol.1 No.2

The present study aimed to assess the relationship between cultural tourism development through public diplomacy between Korea and Pakistan. In this study, it was hypothesized that public diplomacy conducting cultural tourism would determine tourism development. By using a correlational and comparative study design, a survey was conducted on Korean(n=105) and Pakistani(n=105) populations. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study variables and inferential statistics to make some inferences for the study population. After finding the correlation between the study variables, hierarchical regression was used to test the predictive power of public diplomacy. To compare male and female participants on study variables, independent samples t-test was used. Findings showed a significant positive relationship between cultural tourism development and public diplomacy in reference to Korea and Pakistan. Public diplomacy emerged as a strong predictor for tourism development. The results also showed significant gender differences in the study variables. The findings of the present study will contribute to heritage tourism and educational tourism in regard to cultural tourism development.
