        새커리의『허영의 시장』 : 광대 가면을 쓴 화자와의 대화 Dialogue with the Clown-Masked Narrator

        Thackeray's Vanity Fair has evoked many different critical responses, especially, regarding its narrator. Many critics who follow Henry James' art of fiction have been troubled with the intrusive narrator, but some critics such as Wayne Booth have recognized the value of an intrusive narrator and argued that the use of an intrusive narrator is most appropriate in the dramatic context of Vanity Fair. In this paper, I attempt to push Booth's argument a little further and maintain that this narrator is in fact the best example of the clown-masked narrator which Bakhtin sees as one of the literary sources that have made a profound impact upon European literature. A clown can take on the mask of anybody with no responsibility for his words and actions. He can filter through himself the values of people or disclose their falsity or hypocrisy. In the meantime, as a narrator, he does not have to feel responsible for his narrative. For this reason, Bakhtin argues that a clown as a narrator can maintain an appropriate distance from the narrative and the dialogic relationships of all people including himself. The narrator of Vanity Fair is a clown, a mask of the author, whose reflections of characters and the author mock them and show their vanity. What's more noticeable is that he himself contradicts himself, which suggests that the clown as a narrator is also vain just like any character in the novel. For this reason, all perspectives of characters, the author, or even the reader are in dialogical relations, with no one perspective being subjected to another. No one single perspective or idea has the absolute value of goodness or badness, for we, or our perspectives, are all equally independent and continuously in dialogue.

        Four strains of Drosophila melanogaster : one wild strain gathered from the native inhabitant group on Ssangchon-dong in Kwangju, Korea, from May 10 to 23, 1988 and three strains bred and kept in incubators of Kwangju Teachers college for many years-namely, Oregon-R, cinnarbar brown and SD-72 were taken for this experiment to find the effects of two medicines are so constitued Diethylstilbestrol, Euvestrol, and Stilbestrol (Jungwon pharm. Co.) respectively, on the development and eclosion of Drosophila melanogaster. Eggs and imagines of these strains were given Euvestrol and Stilbestrol, and bred in incubators separately, and the following results were obtained from observation. When the laid eggs of Drosophila melanogaster were given Euvestrol Inj., no difference was found by strains, but there was difference by quantity of medicines given. When the imagines of Drosophila melanogaster were given Euvestrol Inj., no difference was observed by strains, but some difference by concentration of medicines with serious effect in high concentration. When the laid eggs of Drosophila melanogaster were given Stilvestrol tab., difference of effects was observed neither of strains by quantity of medicines. When the imagines of Drosophila melanogaster given Stilbestrol tab., showed little difference of effects among the four strains, and no difference by quantity of medicines

      • 실외용 절연 재료 개발을 위한 에폭시 복합재료의 망목 구조 개질에 관한 연구

        옥외용 절연재료를 개발하기 위하여, 에폭시 수지에 SIN(상호침입망목) 구조를 도입하여 내환경성을 연구하였다. 단일망목 시편(E 계열)은 에폭시 수지로만 제작하였고, 상호침입망목 시편(EM 계열)은 일차망목으로 에폭시 수지, 이차 망목으로 메틸메타아크릴수지로서 제작하였다. 충진제 함량에 따라 10종의 시편을 제작하여, 시편의 망목구조 변화를 확인하기 위하여 주사전자 현미경으로 내부 구조를 관찰하였다. 그리고 교류전압절연파괴강도를 측정하였다. 또한, 내환경성을 측정하기 위하여 자외선 조사 실험과 트래킹 실험을 하였다. 그 결과, 내부 구조의 변화를 확인할 수 있었고, 상호침입망목 구조 시편이 단일망목 시편보다 내환경성이 우수함을 확인하였다. In order to develop outdoor insulating materials, SIN(simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network) was introduced to epoxy resin and the environment resistance was investigated. The single network structure specimen(E series) formed of Epoxy resin alone and simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimen (EM series) in which epoxy resin was taken as the first network and methyl methacrylate resin as the second network were manufactured. Ten kinds of specimens were manufactured by filler (SiO_2) content. SEM were utilized in order to confirm their network structure changes, and AC voltage dielectric strength was measured. Also, UV-test and tracking test were carried out to investigate the environment resistance characteristic. Therefore the variations of network structure were happened as a result of SEM test, and it was confirmed that simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network specimens were more excellent than single network structure specimens.

        Tardive Dyskinesia 에 대한 Sodium Valproate 의 치료효과에 관한 연구

        We performed the double-blind placebo-controlled study to investigate the therapeutic effect of sodium valproate known as GABA-ergic agent on tardive dyskinesia. 15 out of 31 patients were treated with sodium valproate (maintenance dose: 1500-2700㎎) and the rest of them were treated with placabo over 8 weeks. We checked the severity of tardive dyskinesia by TDRS (Tardive Dyskinesia Rating Scale, Simpson et al, 1979) just before treatment, the 4th week, the 8th week and the 12th week following beginning of treatment. We checked the serum level of sodium valproate at the 4th weeks and the 8th weeks since the beginning of treatment. The results were as follows: 1) Both TDRS scores of 4th week and 8th week were significantly low compared with those of pretreatment in the group treated with sodium valproate (P<0.001), but TDRS scores returned to the pretreatment score at 12th week (4 weeks after withdrawal of medication). There was no significant relationship between serum level of sodium valproate and TDRS total scores. 2) All of the TDRS scores of 4th week, 8th week, and 12th week were significantly low compared with those of pretreatment in the group treated with placebo.(P<0.01) 3) TDRS scores of the group treated with sodium valproate were not significantly different from those of the group treated with placebo at the time prior to treatment, 4th week, 8th week and 12th week.

        Inhibitory Effects of EGCG on the Dopaminergic Neurons

        This study was designed to investigate the effects of high concentration of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on the neuronal activity of rat substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons. Sprague-Dawley rats aged 14 to 16 days were decapitated under ether anesthesia. After treatment with pronase and thermolysin, the dissociated dopaminergic neurons were transferred into a chamber on an inverted microscope. Spontaneous action potentials and potassium currents were recorded by standard patch-clamp techniques under current and voltage-clamp modes respectively. 18 dopaminergic neurons (80%) revealed inhibitory responses to 40 and 100 μM of EGCG and 4 neurons (20%) did not respond to EGCG. The spike frequency and resting membrane potential of these cells were decreased by EGCG. The amplitude of afterhyperpolarization was increased by EGCG. Whole potassium currents of dopaminergic neurons were increased by EGCG (n=10). These experimental results suggest that high concentration EGCG decreases the neuronal activity of the dopaminergic neurons by altering the resting membrane potential and afterhyperpolarization.

        Expression of the Bacillus thuringiensis Crystal Protein Gene in Pseudomonas Isolated from Rhizosphere Soil of Korean Crops

        Screening of Pseudomonas strains that can be used as hosts for expression of crystal protein gene of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-73 was carried out. From rhizosphere soil of 7 kinds or crops as fluorescent Pseudomonas strains were isolated. A hybrie plasmid, pKTC1, composed of the broad host range vector pKT230 and the crystal protein gene was constructed and used for transformation of the 35 Pseudomonas strains. As the result, the crystal protein gene could be introduced into 4 isolates. Several methods including bioassay and immunochemical detection indicated that the crystall protein gene was expressed in the Pseudomonus isolates. B. thuringiensis가 생산하는 살충성 독소 단백질의 생태학적 응용방법을 개발하기 위한 목적으로 우선 독소 단백질 유전자를 옮겨 발현시키기에 적합한 숙주 미생물의 분리작업을 수행하였다. 국내 주요농산물인 고추, 감자, 무우 등 7가지 농작물의 뿌리부근에 군락을 형성하는 35종의 형광성Pseudomonas들을 분리하였고 독소 단백질 유전자를 함유하는 재조합 plasmid에 대한 숙주로서의 이응가능성을 검토해 보기 위하여 분리균주 35주에 대한 형질전환을 실시한 결과 4주에 독소 단백질 유전자의 도입이 가능하였고 생물검정과 면역학적인 방법 등에 의한 결과 BT 독소 유전자의 발현을 확인하였다.
