        <P>The magnetic properties of polycrystalline ceramic samples (Nd1-xYx)(0.7)Sr0.3MnO3 with x = 0.21 - 0.35 were studied by means of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Experimental results reveal a strong decrease of the ferromagnetic (FM)-paramagnetic phase-transition temperature (T-C) from 97 to 65 K as increasing x from 0.21 to 0.35, respectively. There is magnetic inhomogeneity associated with short-range FM order. Particularly, the samples undergo a spin-glass (SG) phase transition at the so-called blocking temperature (T-B) below T-C, which shifts toward lower temperatures with increasing the applied field, Hex; T-B -> T-g (the SG phase-transition temperature) as H-ex -> 0. The existence of the SG behavior in these samples was also confirmed by frequency (f) dependences of the ac susceptibility. For the in-phase/real component, chi' (T), it shows a frequency-dependent peak at the SG freezing temperature (T-f); T-f -> T-g as f -> 0. Dynamics of this process were analyzed by means of the slowing down scaling law, tau/tau(0) proportional to (T-f/T-g - 1)(-zv), where tau(0) and zv are the characteristic time and critical exponent, respectively. Fitting the experimental T-f(f) data to the scaling law gave the results of zv = 10.1-12.3 and tau(0) = 10(-21)-10(-15)s. These values are different from those expected for canonical SG systems with zv = 10 and tau(0) = 10(-13)s, revealing the cluster-SG behavior of (Nd1-xYx)(0.7)Sr0.3MnO3 samples. Notably, the increase in Y content leads to the shift of tau(0) and zv values toward those of canonical SG systems, which is ascribed to an expansion of SG clusters.</P>

      • Brevundimonas albigilva sp. nov., isolated from forest soil

        <P>Strain NHI-13(T), a Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and short rod-shaped bacterium, was isolated from forest soil at Kyonggi University in Suwon, South Korea. It grew optimally in R2A medium, at 20-30 degrees C, in the presence of 0-4 % NaCl. Colonies resulting from incubation of the strain on agar plates for 2 days were circular, raised, translucent, viscous and whitish-yellow, with entire margins. This strain exhibited high catalase activity but was negative for oxidase. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain NHI-13(T) formed a coherent cluster with members of the genus Brevundimonas. Its similarities were 98.0 % with Brevundimonas aurantiaca DSM 4731(T), 97.9 % with Brevundimonas vesicularis LMG 2350(T), 97.6 % with Brevundimonas intermedia ATCC 15262(T), 97.5 % with Brevundimonas nasdae GTC 1043(T), 97.1 % with 'Brevundimonas olei ' MJ15, 97.1 % with Brevundimonas mediterranea V4.BO.10(T) and 97.0 % with Brevundimonas poindexterae FWC40(T). The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C-18 : 1 omega 7c/C-18 : 1 omega 6c), C-16 : 0 and 11-methyl C-18 : 1 omega 7c. The DNA G+C content was 63 mol%. The predominant quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. The polar lipid profile contained 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-alpha-D-glycopyranuronosyl glycerol, 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-alpha-D-glycopyranosyl glycerol, 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-[D-glycopyranosyl (1 -> 4)-alpha-D-glucopyranuronosyl] glycerols, phosphatidylglycerol, 1,2-diacyl-3-O-(6'-phosphatidyl-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl) glycerol and other unknown lipids. The DNA relatedness of strain NHI-13(T) with its reference strains was in the range of 43-56 %. On the basis of its phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain NHI-13(T) is suggested to be a representative of a novel species, belonging to the genus Brevundimonas. Therefore, the name Brevundimonas albigilva. sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain being NHI-13(T) (=KEME 9005-016(T)=KACC 18249(T)=JCM 30385(T)).</P>

        Tevatron Combination of Single-Top-Quark Cross Sections and Determination of the Magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix ElementVtb

        <P>We present the final combination of CDF and D0 measurements of cross sections for single-top-quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to total integrated luminosities of up to 9.7 fb(-1) per experiment. The t-channel cross section is measured to be sigma(t) = 2.25(-0.31)(+0.29) pb. We also present the combinations of the two-dimensional measurements of the s- vs t-channel cross section. In addition, we give the combination of the s + t channel cross section measurement resulting in sigma(s+t) = 3.30(-0.40)(+0.52) pb, without assuming the standard model value for the ratio sigma(s)/sigma(t). The resulting value of the magnitude of the top-to-bottom quark coupling is vertical bar V-tb vertical bar = 1.02(-0.05)(+0.06), corresponding to vertical bar V-tb vertical bar > 0.92 at the 95% C. L.</P>

        Simple Self Trap Cropping System to Control Tukra Mealy Bug (Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green) Incidence on Mulberry (Morus spp.)

        A field study on self trap cropping system in controlling tukra mealy bug Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green) incidence on mulberry (Morus spp.; V-1 variety; $3'{\times}3'$ spacing) gardens was undertaken in selected sericulture farmers' mulberry gardens of Pydeti village (Parigi Mandal, Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh, India). The study was conducted for three years (2004, 2005 and 2006). Four treatments (T0; control/no treatment, T1; self trap cropping rows with 10 row interval, T2; self trap cropping rows with 10 row interval and treating these rows only with 0.5% neem oil emulsion and T3; self trap cropping rows with 10 rows intervals and treating all the mulberry rows including self trap cropping rows with 0.5% neem oil emulsion) were considered. The results indicated that the incidence increased in T0 and T1 while the same suppressed in T2 and T3. The suppression (%) of tukra incidence between T2 and T3 was not significant. Hence, T2 only was recommended to farmers as its economical viable practice. The results are discussed based on the importance of tukra, its suppression and cost of treatment.

      • Unusual Critical Behavior in La<sub>1.2</sub>Sr<sub>1.8</sub>Mn<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> Single Crystal

        <P>In this paper, we present a detailed analysis on the critical behavior of La<SUB>1.2</SUB>Sr<SUB>1.8</SUB>Mn<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> single crystal via isothermal magnetization measured at different temperatures around the paramagnetic–ferromagnetic phase transition at <TEX>$T_{C} = 85$</TEX> K. Using the Landau–Lifshitz coefficients, the Arrott plots ( <TEX>$H/M = a(T) + b(T)M^{2}$</TEX>) of sample have been analyzed. It showed that a(T) changed from positive to negative values at different temperatures in the field ranges of <TEX>$H = 0$</TEX>–10, 10–30, and 30–50 kOe, indicating that the critical behavior could not be described with a single model under different applied fields. Through the modified Arrott plots method, the Kouvel–Fisher method, and the critical isotherm analysis, we determined the values of the critical exponents for La<SUB>1.2</SUB>Sr<SUB>1.8</SUB>Mn<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> around its magnetic phase transition over different magnetic field ranges. The critical exponent <TEX>$\beta $</TEX> value is found to be 0.501, 0.417, and 0.371 under field ranges of <TEX>$H = 0$</TEX>–10, 10–30, and 30–50 kOe, respectively. This means that the <TEX>$\beta $</TEX> value depends strongly on the strength of the applied field, shifting from the value approaching that of the mean field model ( <TEX>$\beta = 0.5$</TEX>) to the 3-D-Heisenbeg model ( <TEX>$\beta = 0.365$</TEX>). Meanwhile, its <TEX>$\gamma $</TEX> value is quite stable ( <TEX>$\gamma =0.973$</TEX>–1.074), almost independent on the choice of field fitting range. In addition, using the reduced temperature <TEX>$\varepsilon = (T-T_{C}$</TEX>)/ <TEX>$T_{C}$</TEX> and the obtained critical exponents, almost <TEX>$M(H, T$</TEX>) data measured near <TEX>$T_{C}$</TEX> obey the scaling equation <TEX>$M(H, \varepsilon) = \varepsilon ^{\boldsymbol {\beta }}f_{\pm }(H/\varepsilon ^{\boldsymbol {\beta +\gamma }}$</TEX>), where <TEX>$f_{+}$</TEX> and <TEX>$f_{-}$</TEX> are regular analytic functions corresponding to data at <TEX>$T > T_{C}$</TEX> and <TEX>$T < T_{C}$</TEX>, respectively.</P>

        A genome project has been launched and aims to sequence total genome of Cotesia plutellae bracovirus. On this process, several open reading frames (ORFs) have been identified. This study was intended to clone and express protein tyrosine phosphatase genes, PTP1 and PTP6. The ORFs of these two genes consist of 900 and 891 bp, respectively. PTP1 and PTP6 are genes of a group of genes that has been implicated as important regulatory components in cell growth, differentiation and malignant transformation by certain viruses. In this work,we studied the cloning and expression patterns of these genes in Plutella xylostella, a lepidopteran host of C. plutellae. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) produced the corresponding products of PTP1/6. These PCR products were cloned and expressed using an expression vector pBAD-TOPO, and then over-expressed using an inducer, L-arabinose. Then the purified proteins were confirmed using Western blotting (immunoblotting using V5 antibody) and the apparent molecular weights of both proteins were about 40 kDa. Expression of PTP genes were analyzed in the parasitized P. xylostella by realtime RT-PCR, which indicated late expression pattern of both PTPs during parasitization. We are pursuing to elucidate their physiological function in the parasitized host insect.

      • An Effective Route to Control the Magnetic-Phase Transition and Magnetocaloric Effect of La<sub>0.7</sub>Ca<sub>0.3</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> Nanoparticles

        <P>This paper points out that the magnetic-phase transition and magnetocaloric effect of La<SUB>0.7</SUB>Ca<SUB>0.3</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB> (LCMO) can be easily controlled by using the mechanical milling method. Changing the milling time from 5 to 30 min, we have obtained LCMO nanoparticles (NPs) with average crystallite sizes (d, determined by the Williamson-Hall method) ranging from 100 to 45 nm. The magnetic studies (based on a superconducting quantum interference device) and simple analyses (based on Banerjee's criteria) prove the magnetic-phase transformation from the first-order to the second-order, which takes place at a threshold value of d located in the range 60-70 nm. Compared with the as-prepared LCMO sample (a first-order magnetic phase transition), though the d decrease reduces the values of the T<SUB>C</SUB>, magnetization, magnetic-entropy change, and refrigerant capacity, but the width of the magnetic phase transition is increased remarkably. This widens the working range of LCMO NPs in magnetic refrigeration applications. We believe that the presence of surface-related effects, lattice strain, and distortions leads to Mn<SUP>3+</SUP>-Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> ferromagnetic interactions in LCMO NPs weaker than that in the as-prepared sample.</P>

      • Antigen-bearing dendritic cells from the sublingual mucosa recirculate to distant systemic lymphoid organs to prime mucosal CD8 T cells

        Effector T cells are described to be primed in the lymph nodes draining the site of immunization and to recirculate to effector sites. Sublingual immunization generates effector T cells able to disseminate to the genital tract. Herein, we report an alternative mechanism that involves the recirculation of antigen-bearing dendritic cells (DCs) in remote lymphoid organs to prime T cells. Sublingual immunization with a muco-adhesive model antigen unable to diffuse through lymphatic or blood vessels induced genital CD8 T cells. The sublingual draining lymph nodes were not mandatory to generate these lymphocytes, and antigen-bearing DCs from distant lymph nodes and spleen were able to prime specific CD8 T cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that antigen-bearing DCs originating from the site of immunization recirculate to distant lymphoid organs and provides insights into the mechanism of distant CD8 T-cell generation by sublingual immunization.

      • Measurement of the $ {{\rm t}\bar{\rm t}} $ production cross section and the top quark mass in the dilepton channel in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV

        <P>The t (t) over bar production cross section and top quark mass are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment. The measurements are performed in events with two leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state. Results of the cross section measurement in events with and without b-quark identification are obtained and combined. The measured value is sigma(tt) - 168 +/- 18 (stat:) +/- 14 (syst:) +/- 7 (lumi:) pb, consistent with predictions from the standard model. The top quark mass m(top) is reconstructed with two different methods, a full kinematic analysis and a matrix weighting technique. The combination yields a measurement of m(top) = 175.5 +/- 4.6 (stat:) +/- 4: 6 (syst:) GeV/c(2).</P>
