The effects of green tea (Camellia sinensis) waste silage and supplemental polyethylene glycol (PEG) on rumen fermentation and blood components were studied in cattle. Six Holstein steers were fed three diets in a 3${\times}$3 Latin square design, replicated twice. One diet was a control with no added silage, and the other two diets were supplemented (20% of the dry matter) with green tea waste silage either with (PEG) or without PEG (tea). Most of the fermentation parameters including major volatile fatty acids (VFA) were not affected by the diet treatments. The concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol in the PEG group and urea nitrogen in the tea and PEG groups were greater than those in the control before morning feeding. The plasma 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid equivalent concentration was not different before morning feeding, but 3 h after morning feeding, its concentrations in both the tea and PEG groups were higher than in the control. Although the concentration of plasma vitamin A in the animals was not affected by feeding green tea waste silage, the concentrations of plasma vitamin E were significantly higher in the tea and PEG groups than in the control, both before and 3 h after morning feeding. The results from the present study suggest that feeding diets containing 20% of the dietary dry matter as green tea waste silage to Holstein steers has no negative impact on their ruminal fermentation, and increases their plasma antioxidative activity and concentration of vitamin E.
BLOOD PROTEIN POLYMORPHISMS OF NATIVE AND JUNGLE FOWLS IN INDONESIA
Hashiguchi, T.,Nishida, T.,Hayashi, Y.,Maeda, Y.,Mansjoer, S.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1993 Animal Bioscience Vol.6 No.1
In an attempt to reveal the interrelationship between fowls of jungle and native origin, their gene constitutions were compared using gene frequencies at the 16 loci controlling blood protein variations. Of the 16 loci analysed by electrophoresis, polymorphism was detected at following seven loci: Es-1, Amy-1, Akp-akp, Akp-2, Alb, Tf and 6-PGD. The other nine loci: Amy-3, Es-D, PGM, PHI, MDH, To, LDH, Hb-1 and Hb-2, were noted to be monomorphic. Genetic distance between pairs of native fowl and jungle fowls was estimated by a numerical taxonomic method. The Indonesian native fowl was genetically close to the Indonesian red jungle fowl, and the grey jungle fowl was genetically similar to the Ceylonese jungle fowl. It was also suggested that the green jungle fowl was genetically remote from the other jungle fowls and from the Indonesian native flow. The proportion of polymorphic loci (Ppoly), the expected average heterozygosity per individual $\bar{H}$, and the effective number of alleles per locus (Ne) were calculated to evaluate the genetic variabilities in the native and jungle fowls. The Indonesian native fowl exhibited slightly higher the proportion of polymorphic loci than the jungle fowls.
Association of a polymorphism of BTN2A1 with myocardial infarction in East Asian populations

Objective: We have performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic variants that confer susceptibility to myocardial infarction (MI) in Japanese and Korean populations. Methods: A total of 17,447 Japanese or Korean individuals from four independent subject panels was examined. Japanese subject panels A, B, and C comprised 134 individuals with MI and 137 controls, 1431 individuals with MI and 3161 controls, and 643 individuals with MI and 1347 controls, respectively, whereas the Korean population comprised 1880 individuals with MI and 8714 controls. A GWAS for MI was performed in Japanese subject panel A with the use of the Affymetrix GeneChip Human Mapping 500K Array Set. Results: Seventy single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly (P<1.0x10-7) associated with MI by the GWAS were examined further in Japanese subject panel B, revealing two SNPs (rs6929846 of BTN2A1, rs2569512 of ILF3) to be significantly (P<0.0007) associated with MI. The rs6929846 SNP of BTN2A1, but not rs2569512 of ILF3, was also significantly associated with MI in Japanese subject panel C. However, the association of neither rs6929846 nor rs2569512 with MI was replicated in the Korean population. Conclusion: BTN2A1 may be a susceptibility gene for MI in Japanese individuals.

In order to search for new physics beyond the standard model, the next generation of B-factory experiment, Belle II will collect a huge data sample that is a challenge for computing systems. The Belle II experiment, which should commence data collection in 2015, expects data rates 50 times greater than that of Belle. In order to handle this amount of data, we need a new data handling system based on a new computing model, which is a distributed computing model including grid farms as opposed to the central computing model using clusters at the Belle experiment. We have constructed a metadata system and embedded the system in the grid farms of the Belle II experiment. We have tested the system using grid farms. Results show good performance in handling such a huge amount of data.

Mechanisms that regulate the number of cells constituting the body have remained largely elusive. We approached this issue in the ascidian, Halocynthia roretzi, which develops into a tadpole larva with a small number of cells. The embryonic cells divide 11 times on average from fertilization to hatching. The number of cell division rounds varies among tissue types. For example, notochord cells divide 9 times and give rise to large postmitotic cells in the tadpole. The number of cell division rounds in partial embryos derived from tissue-precursor blastomeres isolated at the 64-cell stage also varied between tissues and coincided with their counterparts in the intact whole embryos to some extent, suggesting tissue-autonomous regulation of cell division. Manipulation of cell fates in notochord, nerve cord, muscle, and mesenchyme lineage cells by inhibition or ectopic activation of the inductive FGF signal changed the number of cell divisions according to the altered fate. Knockdown and missexpression of Brachyury (Bra), an FGF-induced notochord-specific key transcription factor for notochord differentiation, indicated that Bra is also responsible for regulation of the number of cell division rounds, suggesting that Bra activates a putative mechanism to halt cell division at a specific stage. The outcome of precocious expression of Bra suggests that the mechanism involves a putative developmental clock that is likely shared in blastomeres other than those of notochord and functions to terminate cell division at three rounds after the 64-cell stage. Precocious expression of Bra has no effect on progression of the developmental clock itself.

The characteristic smell of cow milk was suppressed when herbs were consumed by lactating dairy cows. But it is unclear whether or not peppermint ingestion affects the nutritional and milk production parameters in lactating dairy cows. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of peppermint feeding to lactating dairy cows on nutrient digestibility, energy metabolism, ruminal fermentation and milk production. Eight Holstein cows were given a diet supplemented with or without 5% of dried peppermint per diet on a dry matter basis. The digestion of nutrients from cows fed the diet with peppermint was significantly lower than that of the control group. Energy loss as methane and methane released from cows receiving the peppermint treatment was significantly lower than that in the control cows. Peppermint feeding to cows resulted in the promotion of thermogenesis. However, ruminal fermentation and milk production were not affected by peppermint feeding. In conclusion, peppermint ingestion by lactating dairy cows reduces the nutrient digestibility and methanogenesis, and changes energy metabolism.
