      • First observation ofγγ→pp¯K+K−and search for exotic baryons inpKsystems

        <P>The process gamma gamma -> p (p) over barK(+)K(-) and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The production of p (p) over barK(+)K(-) and a Lambda(1520)(0) ((Lambda) over bar (1520)(0)) signal in the pK(-) ((p) over barK(+)) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. However, no evidence for an exotic baryon near 1540 MeV/c(2), denoted as Theta(1540)(0) ((Theta) over bar (1540)(0)) or Theta(1540)(++) (Theta(1540)(--)), is seen in the pK(-) ((p) over barK(+)) or pK(+) ((p) over barK(-)) invariant mass spectra. Cross sections for gamma gamma -> p (p) over barK(+)K(-), Lambda(1520)(0)(p) over barK(+) + c.c. and the products sigma(gamma gamma -> Theta(1540)(0)(p) over barK(+) + c.c.)B(Theta(1540)(0) -> pK(-)) and sigma(gamma gamma -> Theta(1540)(++)(p) over barK(-) + c.c.)B(Theta(1540)(++) -> pK(+)) are measured. We also determine upper limits on the products of the chi(c0) and chi(c2) two-photon decay widths and their branching fractions to p (p) over barK(+)K(-) at the 90% credibility level.</P>

      • Inhomogeneous Ferromagnetism and Spin-Glass-Like Behavior in <inline-formula> <tex-math notation='TeX'> <tex> $({\rm Nd}_{1-x}{\rm Y}_{x})_{0.7}{\rm Sr}_{0.3}{\rm MnO}_{3}$ </tex> </tex-math></inline-formula> With <inline-formula> <tex-math notation='TeX

        <P>The magnetic properties of polycrystalline ceramic samples (Nd1-xYx)(0.7)Sr0.3MnO3 with x = 0.21 - 0.35 were studied by means of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Experimental results reveal a strong decrease of the ferromagnetic (FM)-paramagnetic phase-transition temperature (T-C) from 97 to 65 K as increasing x from 0.21 to 0.35, respectively. There is magnetic inhomogeneity associated with short-range FM order. Particularly, the samples undergo a spin-glass (SG) phase transition at the so-called blocking temperature (T-B) below T-C, which shifts toward lower temperatures with increasing the applied field, Hex; T-B -> T-g (the SG phase-transition temperature) as H-ex -> 0. The existence of the SG behavior in these samples was also confirmed by frequency (f) dependences of the ac susceptibility. For the in-phase/real component, chi' (T), it shows a frequency-dependent peak at the SG freezing temperature (T-f); T-f -> T-g as f -> 0. Dynamics of this process were analyzed by means of the slowing down scaling law, tau/tau(0) proportional to (T-f/T-g - 1)(-zv), where tau(0) and zv are the characteristic time and critical exponent, respectively. Fitting the experimental T-f(f) data to the scaling law gave the results of zv = 10.1-12.3 and tau(0) = 10(-21)-10(-15)s. These values are different from those expected for canonical SG systems with zv = 10 and tau(0) = 10(-13)s, revealing the cluster-SG behavior of (Nd1-xYx)(0.7)Sr0.3MnO3 samples. Notably, the increase in Y content leads to the shift of tau(0) and zv values toward those of canonical SG systems, which is ascribed to an expansion of SG clusters.</P>

        Quality-of-life and performance status results from the phase III RAINBOW study of ramucirumab plus paclitaxel versus placebo plus paclitaxel in patients with previously treated gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma <sup>†</sup>

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>The phase III RAINBOW trial demonstrated that the addition of ramucirumab to paclitaxel improved overall survival, progression-free survival, and tumor response rate in fluoropyrimidine–platinum previously treated patients with advanced gastric/gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma. Here, we present results from quality-of-life (QoL) and performance status (PS) analyses.</P><P><B>Patients and methods</B></P><P>Patients with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group PS of 0/1 were randomized to receive ramucirumab (8 mg/kg i.v.) or placebo on days 1 and 15 of a 4-week cycle, with both arms receiving paclitaxel (80 mg/m<SUP>2</SUP>) on days 1, 8, and 15. Patient-reported outcomes were assessed with the QoL/health status questionnaires EORTC QLQ-C30 and EQ-5D at baseline and 6-week intervals. PS was assessed at baseline and day 1 of every cycle. Time to deterioration (TtD) in each QLQ-C30 scale was defined as randomization to first worsening of ≥10 points (on 100-point scale) and TtD in PS was defined as first worsening to ≥2. Hazard ratios (HRs) for treatment effect were estimated using stratified Cox proportional hazards models.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Of the 665 patients randomized, 650 (98%) provided baseline QLQ-C30 and EQ-5D data, and 560 (84%) also provided data from ≥1 postbaseline time point. Baseline scores for both instruments were similar between arms. Of the 15 QLQ-C30 scales, 14 had HR < 1, indicating similar or longer TtD in QoL for ramucirumab + paclitaxel. Treatment with ramucirumab + paclitaxel was also associated with a delay in TtD in PS to ≥2 (HR = 0.798, <I>P</I> = 0.0941). Alternate definitions of PS deterioration yielded similar results: PS ≥ 3 (HR = 0.656, <I>P</I> = 0.0508), deterioration by ≥1 PS level (HR = 0.802, <I>P</I> = 0.0444), and deterioration by ≥2 PS levels (HR = 0.608, <I>P</I> = 0.0063). EQ-5D scores were comparable between treatment arms, stable during treatment, and worsened at discontinuation.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>In patients with previously treated advanced gastric/GEJ adenocarcinoma, addition of ramucirumab to paclitaxel prolonged overall survival while maintaining patient QoL with delayed symptom worsening and functional status deterioration.</P><P><B>ClinicalTrials.gov</B></P><P>NCT01170663.</P>

      • Influence of the Change in Oxidation Number of Mn on Magnetic Properties of <inline-formula> <tex-math notation='TeX'> <tex> ${\rm BaTi}_{{1}-{x}}{\rm Mn}_{x}{\rm O}_{3}$ </tex> </tex-math></inline-formula>

        <P>We prepared BaTi<SUB>1-x</SUB>Mn<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> samples (x = 0 and 0.05) by standard solid-state reaction at 700°C and 900°C in an Ar ambient to change oxidation number of Mn dopants. The fabricated samples were then studied structural characterization and electronic structures by means of X-ray diffraction and absorption, and Raman scattering and electron-spin-resonance spectrometers. We found oxidation numbers 2+ and 3+ of Mn ions coexisting in BaTi<SUB>1-x</SUB>Mn<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> with x = 0.05, where the Mn<SUP>2+</SUP>/Mn<SUP>3+</SUP> ratio is about one for the sample annealed at 700°C. These Mn ions prefer locating at the Ti site in the tetragonal BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> host lattice. In particular, there is a change in the oxidation number of Mn<SUP>2+</SUP> → Mn<SUP>3+</SUP> when the annealing temperature changes from 700°C to 900°C. Their magnetic properties are accordingly changed. Meanwhile, annealing pure BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> in an Ar ambient at 700°C and 900°C does not lead to ferromagnetic (FM) order; they are almost diamagnetic. With the obtained results, we believe that FM order in Mn-doped BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> annealed in an Ar ambient is associated with exchange interactions of Mn<SUP>2+</SUP> ions mediated by oxygen vacancies rather than associated with Mn<SUP>3+</SUP> ions.</P>

        Report of the CCQM-K97: measurement of arsenobetaine standard solution and arsenobetaine content in fish tissue (tunafish)

        <P></P> <P>The CCQM-K97 key comparison was organized by the inorganic analysis working group (IAWG) of CCQM as a follow-up to completed pilot study CCQM-P96 and P96.1 to test the abilities of the national metrology institutes to accurately quantitate the mass fraction of arsenobetaine (AsB) in standard solution and in fish tissue. A pilot study CCQM-P133 was parallelized with this key comparison. National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China and National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) acted as the coordinating laboratories.</P> <P>Six NMIs participated in CCQM-K97 and two institutes participated in CCQM-P133, and all of them submitted the results. Some NMIs submitted more than one results by different methods. The results were in excellent agreement with each other, and obviously better than those of previous P96 and P96.1. Therefore the calibrant which each NMI used was comparable.       • Feasibility of proposed single-nucleotide polymorphisms as predictive markers for targeted regimens in metastatic colorectal cancer

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Surrogate biomarkers for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are urgently needed to achieve the best outcomes for targeted therapy.</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>A clinical association analysis was performed to examine the three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were previously proposed as markers of chemosensitivity to the cetuximab (124 patients) and bevacizumab regimens (100 patients) in mCRC patients. In addition, biological correlations were examined for the candidate SNPs in terms of their regulatory pathway.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>For cetuximab regimens, patients homozygous for the wild-type alleles (<I>GG</I>) of <I>LIFR rs3729740</I> exhibited a 1.9 times greater overall response rate (ORR) and 1.4 months longer progression-free survival (PFS) than those homozygous or heterozygous for the mutant allele (<I>GA</I> and <I>AA</I>; <I>P</I>=0.022 and 0.027, respectively). For bevacizumab regimens, patients homozygous for the minor alleles (<I>TT</I>) of <I>ANXA11 rs1049550</I> exhibited an ORR twice as high as those homozygous or heterozygous for the ancestral allele (<I>CC</I> and <I>CT</I>; <I>P</I>=0.031). Overall response rate gain was achieved up to 10% in patients with wild-type <I>LIFR rs3729740</I> patients either with wild-type <I>KRAS</I> or skin toxicity (<I>P</I>=0.001) respectively. Specifically in clones treated with cetuximab and bevacizumab regimens, active p-ERK and MMP-9 expressions were significantly reduced in clones expressing wild-type <I>LIFR rs3729740</I> (<I>P</I>=0.044) and in those expressing minor-type <I>ANXA11 rs1049550</I> (<I>P</I>=0.007), respectively.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P><I>LIFR rs3729740</I> and possibly <I>ANXA11 rs1049550</I> may be useful as biomarkers for predicting whether mCRC patients are sensitive to relevant target regimens, although further validation in large cohorts is needed.</P>

      • Influence of Cr Doping on the Critical Behavior of Amorphous Alloy Ribbons Fe<sub>78–<i>x</i></sub>Cr<sub><i>x</i></sub>Si<sub>4</sub>Nb<sub>5</sub>B<sub>12</sub>Cu<sub>1</sub>

        <P>Though many previous works focused on studying Cr-doped Fe-Si-Nb-B-Cu amorphous alloys, magnetic-interaction mechanisms in these materials have not been carefully investigated yet. Dealing with these issues, we have prepared the amorphous alloy ribbons Fe<SUB>78-x</SUB>Cr<SUB>x</SUB>Si<SUB>4</SUB>Nb<SUB>5</SUB>B<SUB>12</SUB>Cu<SUB>1</SUB> with x= 1, 3, and 6, and then studied their magnetic and critical properties. Magnetization versus temperature and magnetic-field measurements, MHT, performed on a vibrating sample magnetometer reveal that the Cr-content increase in Fe<SUB>78-x</SUB>Cr<SUB>x</SUB>Si<SUB>4</SUB>Nb<SUB>5</SUB>B<SUB>12</SUB>Cu<SUB>1</SUB> reduces the T<SUB>C</SUB> from 430 K for x= 1 to about 322 K (for x= 6). This indicates the decline of ferromagnetic (FM) exchange interactions between Fe atoms when there is the presence of Cr atoms. We have also analyzed the M(H) data at the temperatures in the vicinity of the T<SUB>C</SUB> using the modified Arrott plot method and the scaling hypothesis, and determined the values of the critical exponents β = 0.367-0.376 and γ = 1.315-1.338. These values are close to those expected for the 3-D Heisenberg model with β = 0.365 and γ = 1.336, proving the existence of short-range FM order in the amorphous alloy ribbons.</P>

      • An Effective Route to Control the Magnetic-Phase Transition and Magnetocaloric Effect of La<sub>0.7</sub>Ca<sub>0.3</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> Nanoparticles

        <P>This paper points out that the magnetic-phase transition and magnetocaloric effect of La<SUB>0.7</SUB>Ca<SUB>0.3</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB> (LCMO) can be easily controlled by using the mechanical milling method. Changing the milling time from 5 to 30 min, we have obtained LCMO nanoparticles (NPs) with average crystallite sizes (d, determined by the Williamson-Hall method) ranging from 100 to 45 nm. The magnetic studies (based on a superconducting quantum interference device) and simple analyses (based on Banerjee's criteria) prove the magnetic-phase transformation from the first-order to the second-order, which takes place at a threshold value of d located in the range 60-70 nm. Compared with the as-prepared LCMO sample (a first-order magnetic phase transition), though the d decrease reduces the values of the T<SUB>C</SUB>, magnetization, magnetic-entropy change, and refrigerant capacity, but the width of the magnetic phase transition is increased remarkably. This widens the working range of LCMO NPs in magnetic refrigeration applications. We believe that the presence of surface-related effects, lattice strain, and distortions leads to Mn<SUP>3+</SUP>-Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> ferromagnetic interactions in LCMO NPs weaker than that in the as-prepared sample.</P>

      • Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of ZnTe nanostructures and their structural, electrochemical and photoelectrical properties

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Colloidal zinc telluride (ZnTe) nanostructures were successfully processed through a simple and facile ultrasonic (sonochemical) treatment for photoelectronic applications. The particle-like morphological features, phase and nature of valence state of various metal ions existing in ZnTe were examined using electron and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic tools. Raman spectroscopic measurements revealed the dominance of exciton-phonon coupling and occurrence of TeO<SUB>2</SUB> traces in ZnTe through the corresponding vibrations. Optical bandgap of the ZnTe suspension was estimated to be around 2.15eV, authenticating the direct allowed transitions. The <I>p</I>-type electrical conductivity and charge carrier density of ZnTe were additionally estimated from the Bode, Nyquist and Mott-Schottky type impedance plots. The photoelectrical properties of ZnTe were investigated by fabricating <I>p</I>-ZnTe/<I>n</I>-Si heterostructures and studying their corresponding current-voltage characteristics under dark and white light illumination. The diodes revealed excellent rectifying behaviour with significant increase in reverse current under illumination. The stability of the devices were also affirmed through the time-dependent photoresponse characteristics, which actually suggested the improved and effective separation of photo generated electron hole pairs across the integrated heterojunctions. The obtained results also augment the potential of sonochemically processed ZnTe for application in photo detection and sensor related functions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Nanostructured ZnTe were ultrasonically processed for photoelectronics. </LI> <LI> Raman, XPS and electron microscopic tools affirmed their physico-chemical traits. </LI> <LI> Electrical properties were studied using Nyquist and Mott-Schottky plots. </LI> <LI> <I>I</I>-<I>V</I> studies augment the improved photo response in p-ZnTe/n-Si heterojunctions. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Photoswitching and photocatalytic functions of Sn<sub>x</sub>Cu<sub>1−x</sub>S nanostructures

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ultra-thin semiconducting nanostructures are garnering strategic importance in energy and environment remediation applications. In this regard, Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S nanostructures were processed through an eco-friendly chemical route and investigated in detail for photoswitching and photocatalytic functions. X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, Raman, UV–vis absorbance and high-resolution microscopic tools were initially used to examine the physico-chemical traits of Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S nanostructures. Ambiguous evidence for the substitution of Sn ions in place of Cu ions was attained through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S systems was investigated through effective remediation of organic dye molecules under visible light. Scavenger based photocatalytic experiments were additionally carried out to infer the degradation mechanism. Type II <I>p-n</I> Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S/In<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> heterojunction diodes were also demonstrated for the first time with improved electrical conductivity and photoelectrical performances. The rectification ratio, forward current values and photo switching capabilities of these diodes were noted to improve in the Current vs. Voltage (I-V) and Current vs. Time (I-T) curves as a function of Sn composition and applied bias potential. The excellent photo switching stability augments the photo generated carriers to be effectively separated along the p-n junctions. The enhanced photoelectronic and photocatalytic functionalities in Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S has finally been reasoned to the improved charge transfer kinetics in the respective architectures, resulting from the effective Sn interaction in hexagonal host lattice.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S nanostructures were fabricated by hydrothermal route. </LI> <LI> The nanostructures exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light. </LI> <LI> Sn interaction in hexagonal host lattice promoted their photocatalytic performance. </LI> <LI> p-Sn<SUB>x</SUB>Cu<SUB>1−x</SUB>S/n-In<SUB>2</SUB>S<SUB>3</SUB> diodes demonstrated improved photoswitching performance. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
