An Analytical Study of Euthanasia in Buddhism with Special Reference to the Case of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu’s Death

Supre Kanjanaphitsarn 동국대학교 불교학술원 2013 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.21 No.-

This paper aims to enhance of understanding of the issue of euthanasia, as well as to analyze and apply the acquired knowledge to remind followers of all religions the importance of having the proper attitude towards death and how to confront it. I have cited five factors related to the first precept for lay Buddhists presented in the Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka) and its commentaries (aṭṭhakathā). This precept admonishes against killing, and the factors I cited should be a criterion for how to view the euthanasia issue. I also want to assert that doctors should acknowledge and accept a patient’s right to refuse medical treatment and allow them to die naturally if that is the patient’s wish. This research presents and illustrates the textual approach to qualitative research. The primary sources of my data were the Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka) and its commentaries (aṭṭhakathā) and sub-commentaries (ṭīkā). Secondary sources were books by well-known scholars in the field of Buddhist bioethics. I categorized and analyzed all the collected data to present a clear picture of the issue of euthanasia from a Buddhist perspective. The case of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu’s death and his interpretations of the application of Buddhist teachings are one possible way to resolve the issue of euthanasia and help Thai medical practitioners to prepare a system of proper hospice care that will assist patients in attaining inner tranquility, allowing them to die in peace naturally.

A Study of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu’s Concept of Death before Death

Supree Kanjanapisarn 동국대학교 불교학술원 2012 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.18 No.-

Since ancient times, death is a mysterious problem that surrounds all human beings. In Buddhist teachings, dread of death can be defeated by facing and understanding the physical body as the characteristics of the Five Aggregates which are not our own selves, and then avoiding attachments by practicing the Noble Eightfold Path. This thesis study proposes the concept of “death before death” taught by Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu as a practice towards achieving the extinction of all defilements and suffering in this life here and now. This concept is known as “the death of attachment to the self-idea of I and mine.”The aim of this study is to study the real meaning of death (maraṇa), to analyze and criticize Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu’s concept of “death before death” as related to nirvana (nibbāna) the supreme goal of Buddhism; and also to compare his demythologization and his own hermeneutic method with the teaching that appears in Buddhist texts. This thesis study uses the descriptive and comparative method in order to reflect the ideas of various scholars of anthropology, sociology and phenomenology of religion through aspects of Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu’s thought, in order to build bridges of intra-faith and inter-faith dialogues among people of different religions. In addition, this study also offers a practical method for adjusting our attitudes towards death taught by Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu that is related to the pure nature of religious doctrine for delivering people of all religions from the world of materialism.

Synthesis and Thermoelectric Properties of Ca3Co4O9 Prepared by a Simple Thermal Hydro-Decomposition Method

        Natkrita Prasoetsopha,Supree Pinitsoontorn,Vittaya Amornkitbamrung 대한금속·재료학회 2012 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.8 No.3

Thermoelectric Ca3Co4O9 powders were synthesized by a simple thermal hydro-decomposition method, which is novel, simple and cost effective for preparing such materials. The stoichiometric ratio of the acetate salts was mixed in de-ionized water and heated at 1073 K to obtain a single phase of Ca3Co4O9, which was confirmed by TG-DTA, XRD and chemical analysis. The electron micrograph showed plate-like particles with a diameter of ~1 μm. The hot-pressed powders show the electrical resistivity of 11.6 mΩcm, the Seebeck coefficient of 200 μV/K, and the thermal conductivity of 1.2 Wm−1K−1 at 880 K, which corresponds to a dimensionless figure-of-merit ZT of 0.23.

Giant Dielectric Behavior Observed in Ca3Co4O9 Ceramic

        Natkrita Prasoetsopha,Supree Pinitsoontorn,Prasit Thongbai,Teerapon Yamwong 대한금속·재료학회 2013 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.9 No.3

Giant dielectric properties of a Ca3Co4O9 ceramic, a p-type thermoelectric material, are reported for the first time. A very high dielectric permittivity of about 1.38 × 104 was observed at a temperature of 20°C and frequency of 1 kHz. A Debye-like relaxation behavior with a thermally activated mechanism was observed. The relaxation activation energy was 0.363 eV. It was found that aging time and thermal annealing of the ceramics with Au electrodes have remarkable influence on the value of the dielectric permittivity of this ceramic. Using combined –Z'' and M'' plots, it was found that the giant dielectric response observed in the Ca3Co4O9 ceramic is attributable to the sample-electrode contact effect.

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Cr-doped SnO₂ Nanocrystalline Powders Based Dilute Magnetic Oxides

        Kwanruthai Wongsaprom,Akekapol Winyayong,Supree Pinitsoontorn,Pinit Kidkhunthod,Somchai Sonsupap,Santi Maensiri 한국자기학회 2021 Journal of Magnetics Vol.26 No.3

The nanocrystalline powders of Cr-doped SnO₂ with Cr-dopant concentrations of 2, 4 and 6 wt%, were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. XRD results, along with the FT-IR and SAED patterns, confirmed the formation of the SnO₂’s tetragonal phase without other impurity phases. Optical analysis revealed a significant decrease in the energy gap of the doped samples from 3.69 to 3.40 eV. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, including x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, was used to qualitatively investigate the valence states of doped Cr. Room temperature ferromagnetism was observed in Cr-doped SnO₂ samples. The highest value of magnetization was found in SnO₂ doped with 4 wt% of Cr (about 4.88 memu/g) and decreased slightly as the Cr concentration increased. The reduction of magnetization with the increase of Cr content happened because antiferromagnetic Cr-O-Cr super-exchange interaction took place within the nearest Cr3+ ions through O2- ions. The oxygen vacancies were induced by the ferromagnetism in the Cr-doped SnO₂ nanocrystalline powders.

      • APMP international comparison of AC-DC transfer standards at the lowest attainable level of uncertainty

        Budovsky, I.,Abidin, A.R.B.Z.,Yan, A.Y.K.,Liu, LingXiang,Rustagi, V.K.,Govil, A.K.,Klonz, M.,Wei, Yih-cheng,Early, M.D.,Sasaki, H.,Fujiki, H.,Kumtawee, C.,Charoensook, A.,Kwon, Sung-Won,Son, N.A.,Supr IEEE 2005 IEEE transactions on instrumentation and measureme Vol.54 No.2

This paper presents preliminary results of the APMP.EM-K6a key comparison of AC-DC transfer conducted during 2000 to 2003. The AC-DC voltage transfer difference of the travelling standard was measured at 3 V and selected frequencies from 1 kHz to 1 MHz that included those of the CCEM-K6a key comparison. Also discussed are the methods used to compare thermal voltage converters with different input connectors, and to link the results to the parent Consultative Committee on Electricity and Magnetism (CCEM) comparison.
