      • UPS Applying Big Data Analytics to Logistics:

        Sung-Hee “Sunny” Park,Do-Hong Kim 한국경영정보학회 2014 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.1

Managing big data has become increasingly important to businesses as big data analytics can transform big data into insightful information. But, not many companies utilize it efficiently and effectively. While many companies in the transportation industry are facing many challenges with big data, United Parcel Service (UPS) is successfully applying big data analytics to logistics. UPS’s proprietary routing software, called ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), uses package-level detail and customized online map data to provide drivers with optimized routing information. In 2013, ORION resulted in reductions of more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel and 14,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. This paper discusses UPS’s innovative path to optimization from data gathering to visualization.

Clinical effectiveness of mindfulness-based music therapy on improving emotional regulation in blind older women: A randomized controlled trial

        Sunny H.W. Chan,Meryl Y.C. Cheung,Armstrong T.S. Chiu,Mimi H.T. Leung,Michael C.C. Kuo,Donald Y.C. Yip,Carole C.Y. Hui,Sally W.I. Kam,King Yeung,Doreen S.P. Mui,Shu-Mei Wang,Calvin C.K. Yip 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.4

Background: This study aimed to investigate clinical effectiveness of a structured eight-week mindfulness-based music therapy (MBMT) program on improving mood regulation in older women with blindness. This investigation compared a MBMT group with a mindfulness intervention (MI) group and a control group. Methods: Ninety-two older females with blindness from a residential setting in Hong Kong were recruited and randomly allocated to a MBMT (n = 31), MI (n = 30), or control (n = 31) group. Psychological measurements regarding mood regulation and general mood states (namely, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale [DERS], Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS], and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21), were taken at pretest and posttest. Outcome assessors were blinded to group assignment. Results: Data was analyzed based on intention-to-treat basis. At posttest, DERS scores in the MBMT group (mean differences and 95% confidence interval: 12.1, 5.5 to 18.8) and the MI group (7.2, 0.5 to 13.8) were lower than that in the control group. GDS scores in the MBMT group (2.9, 1.7 to 4.0) and the MI group (1.7, 0.6 to 2.9) were lower than those in the control group. Compared with the MI group, the MBMT group improved emotional awareness sub-scores in DERS (2.1, 0.2 to 4.1) and appeared to lower depression in GDS scores (1.1, -0.0 to 2.3; p = 0.053). Conclusion: MBMT seems more beneficial than MI alone for improving emotional regulation in older women with blindness. The combination of mindfulness and music can generate a synergetic effect by enhancing both attention and appraisal components within the emotional-regulation process. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05583695.

The combined effect of extraoral vibratory stimulus and external cooling on pain perception during intra-oral local anesthesia administration in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis

        Sunny Priyatham Tirupathi,Neethu Nanda,Sneha Pallepagu,Sardhar Malothu,Nilesh Rathi,Rashmi Singh Chauhan,VakaJeevan Priyanka,Rameshreddy Basireddy 대한치과마취과학회 2022 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.22 No.2

This study aimed to assess the combined use of extraoral vibratory stimulation and extraoral cooling in reducing the pain (subjective and objective) of dental local anesthesia administration in children. PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Ovid SP databases were searched up to July 2021. Article titles were screened and full-text evaluations of the selected articles were performed. Finally, seven studies (391 children, aged 4 – 12 years) were included in this qualitative and quantitative analysis. The pooled data determined the combined effect of extraoral vibration and extraoral cooling as a single measure. Extraoral vibration or cooling alone were not compared. The measured primary and secondary outcomes were pain perception and subjective and objective pain, respectively. When compared with the control, extraoral vibration and cooling resulted in significant differences in the mean combined data for the variables, pain perception, and pain reaction. Children’s subjective pain as measured by pain scores were reduced when extraoral vibration and cooling was used during local anesthesia administration (mean difference -3.52; 95% confidence interval [-5.06 - 1.98]) and objective pain (mean difference -1.46; 95% confidence interval [-2.95 - 0.02] ; mean difference -1.93; 95% confidence interval [-3.72 - 0.14]). Within the confines of this systematic review, there is low-quality evidence to support the use of combined extraoral vibration and cooling for reducing pain (subjective and objective) during intraoral local anesthesia administration in children.

      • An artificial neural network residual kriging based surrogate model for curvilinearly stiffened panel optimization

        Sunny, Mohammed R.,Mulani, Sameer B.,Sanyal, Subrata,Kapania, Rakesh K. Techno-Press 2016 Advances in computational design Vol.1 No.3

We have performed a design optimization of a stiffened panel with curvilinear stiffeners using an artificial neural network (ANN) residual kriging based surrogate modeling approach. The ANN residual kriging based surrogate modeling involves two steps. In the first step, we approximate the objective function using ANN. In the next step we use kriging to model the residue. We optimize the panel in an iterative way. Each iteration involves two steps-shape optimization and size optimization. For both shape and size optimization, we use ANN residual kriging based surrogate model. At each optimization step, we do an initial sampling and fit an ANN residual kriging model for the objective function. Then we keep updating this surrogate model using an adaptive sampling algorithm until the minimum value of the objective function converges. The comparison of the design obtained using our optimization scheme with that obtained using a traditional genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization scheme shows satisfactory agreement. However, with this surrogate model based approach we reach optimum design with less computation effort as compared to the GA based approach which does not use any surrogate model.

      • Numerical Hydrodynamic Analysis of a Wave Energy Convertor- Rotor in Irregular Waves

        Sunny Kumar Poguluri(포구루리 써니 쿠마르),Dongeun Kim(김동은),Yoon Hyeok Bae(배윤혁) 한국신재생에너지학회 2021 한국신재생에너지학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.7

In this study, performance assessment of the wave power absorption characteristics of an wave energy converter (WEC) rotor has been investigated using nonlinear – computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in irregular waves. Initially, the experimental results based on regular waves are used to validate the CFD results. Further, it has been extended to irregular waves where the primary focus is to check whether an optimum PTO loading can be achievable for the present WEC-rotor in irregular waves. The success of any WEC largely depends on the power take off (PTO) system which converts the mechanical energy into a more useful energy. For the purpose, the implementation and simulation of the damping mechanism is carried out by the coulomb damping which broadly replicate the PTO characteristics of a typical hydraulic system in irregular waves. The pitch response and rotational moment of the WEC-rotor in regular waves, shows the clockwise pitch motion is higher than the counter-clockwise pitch motion due to its unique asymmetric geometric configuration of the rotor. The major part of the study deals with the one-way PTO system that gives a torque only in one direction and compared with the two-way PTO system for the operational wave conditions.

Buffered versus unbuffered local anesthesia for inferior alveolar nerve block injections in children: a systematic review

Sunny Priyatham Tirupathi,Srinitya Rajasekhar 대한치과마취과학회 2020 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.20 No.5

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of buffered and unbuffered local anesthesia solutions during inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) administration in children. Methods: PubMed, Ovid SP, and Cochrane databases were searched separately by two independent reviewers for potential papers published between 1980 and April 2020 using relevant MeSH terms and pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. T Studies of IANB administration in children comparing buffered and unbuffered local anesthesia solutions were evaluated. The primary outcome evaluated was pain (perception and reaction), while the secondary outcome was the onset of anesthesia. Results: A total of five articles were included in a qualitative analysis; among them, four qualified for quantitative analysis of the primary outcome and three for quantitative analysis of the secondary outcome. A fixed-effects model was used to perform the meta-analysis. Pain perception (child-reported pain): Significantly lower pain scores were reported with buffered local anesthesia solution than with unbuffered solution (P = 0.006, MD: -0.32, 95% CI: -0.55 to -0.09). Pain reaction (observer-reported pain reaction in child): No significant difference was found between buffered and unbuffered solution in terms of observer-reported pain behavior in the child (P = 0.09, MD: -0.21, 95% CI: -0.46 to 0.04). Onset of anesthesia: A significantly lower duration of anesthesia onset was reported with buffered local anesthesia solution than with unbuffered solution (P = 0.00001, MD: -12.38, 95% CI: -17.64 to -7.13]. Conclusion: Buffering local anesthesia solution may reduce discomfort due to IANB injection administration and lower the initial onset time of anesthesia. More randomized control trials with adequate sample sizes should be carried out to validate the accuracy of these results.

Transforming the Fitness Center Business Model: A Service-Profit Chain Approach

        Sunny YI,Timothy Connerton,박정열 여가문화학회 2019 여가학연구 Vol.17 No.3

With the surging need for indoor leisure activities for Koreans due to deteriorating air condition and weather, the competitions among various business segments in the fitness industry have also grown, facing a considerable challenge for survival. Many fitness centers suffer from bad quality of service, transient and poorly trained workforce, and damaging reputation; thus, deteriorating sustainability in the long run. While a few fitness center operators offer differentiated products and services, unique marketing programs, and deeply discounted pricing scheme in order to acquire new customers and retain existing customers, the business model of the fitness industry needs a thorough evaluation to test its validity and profitability. By using a case study, this research examines how one fitness chain company in Korea is differentiating itself and transforming the industry dynamics. Using interviews as primary research source, this paper incorporates the service-profit chain framework to examine the critical success factors of the fitness industry, identify differentiating service delivery factors, and explore further opportunities to establish as a sustainable business model. Finally, this study derives implications from employee and customer loyalty construct to reshape the future fitness industry.

EMPLOYING COMMON LIMIT RANGE PROPERTY WITH VARIANTS OF R-WEAKLY COMMUTING MAPPINGS IN METRIC SPACES

        Sunny Chauhan,Jelena VujakoviĆ,Shamsul Haq 한국수학교육학회 2015 純粹 및 應用數學 Vol.22 No.2

The object of this paper is to emphasize the role of `common limit range property' and utilize the same with variants of R-weakly commuting mappings for the existence of common fixed point under strict contractive conditions in metric spaces. We also furnish some interesting examples to validate our main result. Our results improve a host of previously known results including the ones contained in Pant [Contractive conditions and common fixed points, Acta Math. Acad. Paed- agog. Nyházi. (N.S.) 24(2) (2008), 257{266 MR2461637 (2009h:54061)]. In the process, we also derive a fixed point result satisfying Φ-contractive condition.

The effectiveness and efficiency of China’s special admission policies: the case of X University

Sunny Xinchun Niu,Guofang Wan 서울대학교 교육연구소 2018 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.19 No.1

The Chinese government has implemented a series of special admission policies in recent years to increase access to elite universities for disadvantaged students from rural areas and less developed inland regions. Using administrative data of 1996–2015 freshman cohorts and survey data of a 2014 freshman cohort at X University in the eastern China, we empirically assess the effectiveness, and the dual concerns of equity and efficiency of these policies. Findings show that these policies have effectively changed the geographic composition of enrollees at X University toward higher proportions of students from the central and western regions and lower share of the local students. While students from the western region underperformed academically, urban students in this region caught up quickly. Low family SES and weak academic preparation largely explained why rural students from the western region underperformed. Importantly, compared with the local students who scored lower in college entrance exam—the proxy for likely displaced students because of the policies, the likely admission policy beneficiaries performed about equally well. These results indicate that the current practice of Chinese special admission policies has effectively promoted equal access to Chinese elite universities with a limited loss in efficiency.
