State Readings and Boundedness in the Korean Progressive
Sungki Suh 한국생성문법학회 2017 생성문법연구 Vol.27 No.3
Suh, Sungki. 2017. State Readings and Boundedness in the Korean Progressive. Studies in Generative Grammar, 27-3, 649-674. The Korean progressive -ko iss form often produces a state reading rather than a progressive reading when it occurs with a state verb, whereas the English progressive is basically incompatible with state verbs and produces a state reading only in very limited cases. We claim that, in spite of such a contrast, progressives in the two languages share a crucial property: The presence of Hold and the absence of Cul (culmination) in the sense of Parsons (1989) govern the basic distribution of progressives in Korean as well as in English. Meanwhile, the more generous distribution of Korean progressive can be attributed to its unique licensing condition, i.e., the boundedness condition, which only excludes the verbs describing an unbounded state from taking the progressive form. As for the exceptional cases of English progressive, the mechanism of type coercion can explain how a state verb occurs in its progressive form.
Effect of Grass Silage Supplementation on Performance in Lactating Cows Grazing on Pasture
Sung, K.I.,Okubo, M. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.10
Two trials were carried out during two different grazing seasons to evaluate effect of grass silage supplementation, when amount of pasture is limited on dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, and gross energetic efficiency (GEE) of grazed lactating cows on a high forage-based diet. Fifty-one Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments: high pasture group or high silage group. In the spring flush, pasture and silage DMI, milk yield, milk fat percentage, and GEE were not different between the dietary groups. After the spring flush, pasture and silage DMI were higher for the high silage group than for the high pasture group. After the spring flush, although these were the higher total DMI of the high silage group than the high pasture group, milk yield was significantly (p<0.05) higher for the high pasture group than the high silage group. Milk fat percentage tended to be higher for the high silage group than the high pasture group. The GEE was significantly (p<0.05) higher for the high pasture group than the high silage group during after the spring flush. This study indicated that supplementation of grass silage, especially after the spring flush, can have a significant effect of increasing of forage intake and maintenance of the milk fat percentage; but not increase milk yield and GEE.
Effects of Revenue-Sharing Contracts on the Profits of Competing Manufacturers and a Retailer
Sungki Kim(김성기),Nina Shin(신니나),Sangwook Park(박상욱) 한국경영과학회 2018 한국경영과학회지 Vol.43 No.2
This study investigates the effect of revenue-sharing contracts in two competing manufacturers and one common retailer model under game theoretic settings. One manufacturer uses a revenue-sharing contract (RSC) and the competitor a wholesale price contract (WPC). We study whether the adoption of an RSC coordinates the supply chain of the RSC-adopting manufacturer and the retailer and how it affects two manufacturers’ profits under two game scenarios : two-stage and one-stage game. We analyze the effects of demand parameters which represent product characteristic, such as price sensitivity and product substitutability on supply chain members’ profits. We find that the RSC in the two-stage game does not coordinate the supply chain. Conversely, the RSC in the one-stage game coordinates the corresponding supply chain for some sets of demand parameters values, and that for others, the competing manufacturer experience greater profit increase than the RSC-adopting one.
Aspectual Taxonomy without Feature Specification
Sungki Suh 한국생성문법학회 2019 생성문법연구 Vol.29 No.2
Theories of verb aspect have often assumed feature-based aspectual classifications (e.g., Smith (1997)). In this paper, it is argued that aspectual taxonomies based on feature specification are not adequate in that the features such as [durative] and [telic] are problematic in their application. As an alternative, we propose to adopt the system in Carlson (1981), where three grammatical criteria are used for categorizing inherent verb aspect types. In the proposed system, achievement verbs in Smith (1997) are divided into two different classes, and semelfactives are not treated as an independent category any more. As for conventional stative verbs, the distinction between statives proper and dynamic states is made. The necessity of such a taxonomy of aspect is supported by both Korean and English data.
A Tripartite Model of Verb Aspect: [transition] as a Key Feature
Sungki Suh 한국영어학학회 2019 영어학연구 Vol.25 No.2
The four-way classification of verb aspect in Vendler (1957) or the five-way classification in Smith (1997) has been assumed in many theories of verb aspect, with [telic] and [durative] functioning as key features deciding aspect types. We argue that since [durative] poses conceptual and empirical problems, it needs to be discarded in the feature specification of verb aspect. Then we propose a tripartite model of verb aspect, where achievements and accomplishments can be merged. In our tripartite model, [telic] is replaced by [transition] in order to deal with inchoative verbs properly. Using [transition] as a key feature is also desirable in that semelfactives can naturally be grouped together with activities.
THE EFFECTS OF MESH STYLE ON THE FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS FOR ARTIFICIAL HIP JOINT
Sungki Kim,Junseok Kim 한국산업응용수학회 2011 한국산업응용수학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.6 No.1
In this paper, a good quality mesh generation for the finite element method is investigated for artificial hip joint simulations. In general, bad meshes with a large aspect ratio or mixed elements can give rise to excessively long computational running times and extremely high errors. Typically, hexahedral elements outperform tetrahedral elements during three-dimensional contact analysis using the finite element method. Therefore, it is essential to mesh biologic structures with hexahedral elements. Four meshing schemes for the finite element analysis of an artificial hip joint are presented and compared: (1) tetrahedral elements, (2) wedge and hexahedral elements, (3) open cubic box hexahedral elements, and (4) proposed hexahedral elements. The proposed meshing scheme is to partition a part before seeding so that we have a high quality three-dimensional mesh which consists of only hexahedral elements. The von Mises stress distributions were obtained and analyzed. We also performed mesh refinement convergence tests for all four cases.
NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF TURBULENT FLOW THROUGH A DENTAL HANDPIECE
Sungki Kim 한국산업응용수학회 2009 한국산업응용수학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.4 No.2
A turbulent flow through a dental handpiece is numerically simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics software package. The dental high-speed handpiece is one of devices used in making holes, cutting, and polishing tooth structure in dentistry. The high-speed handpiece usually rotates at more than 400,000 rpm (rotation per minute). The simulation uses the standard κ-ε model and a multiple reference frame. We investigate the flow field inside handpiece device to find an optimal design of the structure to increase the torque.
