As the demand of renewable energy keeps growing, the installation of solar panels has been increased in the world. Once life-span of solar panels is reached, end-of-life of solar panels or solar panel waste can be generated for waste management. Environmentally sound management of solar panel waste has become an issue of concern around the world because they contain valuable materials as well as toxic pollutants upon disposal. This study examines the estimation of solar panel waste by using population balance model by 2050 in South Korea. The lifespan distribution analysis of solar panels was based on the literature with the Weibull distribution. Based on the results in this study, we found that solar panel waste in 2040 is estimated to be approximately 76,000 ton in South Korea, consisting of 57,000 ton of glass, 7,600 ton of polymers, 6,000 ton of aluminium, 3,800 ton of silicon, and other metals (silver, tin, and lead) for disposal. By 2050, approximately 1.7 million ton of solar panel waste would be accumulatively generated with continued annual increase. Material recycling and recovery from the waste should be implemented for resource conservation towards a circular economy. Refined estimation of the solar panel waste is still needed by conducting sensitive analysis with more reliable data such as its life spans, demands for solar panels, and mass of panel types.
On the Use of Prediction Strategy in Korean EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension

Despite the widespread understanding about the facilitative role of strategy use in reading comprehension, there has been little research evidence regarding the potential contribution of the readers’ actual performance on a specific strategy, especially prediction strategies, to their reading comprehension. Moreover, although second/foreign language readers’ strategy use may be related to their reading abilities and language proficiency in the target language, not many studies have controlled for such effects in identifying the relationship between strategy uses and reading comprehension. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Korean middle school EFL learners’ actual use of prediction strategy and their reading comprehension. Furthermore, it examines whether such relationships may differ as a function of their English reading abilities and proficiency. One hundred thirty three Korean EFL middle school readers’ performance on the tests of English reading comprehension, prediction abilities, vocabulary and oral comprehension abilities was analyzed. The findings not only demonstrated the positive relations prediction strategy has with reading comprehension, but also identified different predictive roles it plays in the reading comprehension of good versus poor readers.

Biosensors consist of biochemical recognition agents like antibodies immobilized on the surfaces of transducers that change the recognition into a measurable electronic signal. Here we report a piezoelectric immunosensor made to detect Vibrio vulnificus. A 9MHz AT-cut piezoelectric wafer attached with two gold electrodes of 5mm diameter was used as the transducer of the QCM biosensor with a reproducibility of ±0.1 Hz in frequency response. We have tried different approaches to immobilize antibody on the sensor chip. Concerning the orientation of antibody for the best antigen binding capacity, the antibody was immobilized by specific binding to protein G or by cross-linking through hydrazine. In addition, protein G was cross-linked on glutaraldehyde activated immine layer (PEI) or EDC/NHS activated sulfide monolayer (MPA). PEI was found to be more effective to immobilize protein G following glutaraldehyde activation than MPA. However, hydrazine chip showed a better capability to immobilize more IgG than protein G chip and a higher sensitivity. The sensor system was able to detect V. vulnificus in dose dependent manner and was able to detect bacterial cells within 5 minutes by monitoring frequency shifts in real time. The detection limit can be improved by preincubation to enrich the bacterial cell number.
