The Horizontal Branch Population of NGC 1851 as Revealed by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT)

        Subramaniam, Annapurni,Sahu, Snehalata,Postma, Joseph E.,,,, Patrick,Hutchings, J. B.,Darukhanawalla, N.,Chung, Chul,Tandon, S. N.,Rao, N. Kameswara,George, K.,Ghosh, S. K.,Girish, V.,M American Astronomical Society 2017 The Astronomical journal Vol.154 No.6

We present the UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1851 using images acquired with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard the ASTROSAT satellite. Point-spread function fitting photometric data derived from images in two far-UV (FUV) filters and one near-UV (NUV) filter are used to construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), in combination with HST and ground-based optical photometry. In the FUV, we detect only the bluest part of the cluster horizontal branch (HB); in the NUV, we detect the full extent of the HB, including the red HB, blue HB, and a small number of RR Lyrae stars. UV variability was detected in 18 RR Lyrae stars, and three new variables were also detected in the central region. The UV/optical CMDs are then compared with isochrones of different age and metallicity (generated using Padova and BaSTI models) and synthetic HB (using helium-enhanced Y2 models). We are able to identify two populations among the HB stars, which are found to have either an age range of 10-12. Gyr, or a range in Y-ini of 0.23-0.28, for a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.2 to -1.3. These estimations from the UV CMDs are consistent with those from optical studies. The almost-complete sample of the HB stars tends to show a marginal difference in spatial/azimuthal distribution among the blue and red HB stars. Thus, this study showcases the capability of UVIT, with its excellent resolution and large field of view, to study the hot stellar population in Galactic globular clusters.

Histopathology of Venerid Clams Leucoma (=Protothaca) jedoensis (Lischke, 1874) Occurring on the South Coast of Korea

Subramaniam Thatchaneshkanth,최광식 한국해양과학기술원 2023 Ocean and Polar Research Vol.45 No.4

Commonly occurring on a shallow subtidal coarse sand bottom in the northwest Pacific region, the Jedo Venus clam Leucoma (=Protothaca) jedoensis (Lischke, 1874) is one of the valuable shellfish resources supporting the local fisheries industry on the south coast of Korea. In this study, we surveyed the pathologic condition of L. jedoensis from a shallow subtidal sand flat in Gamakman Bay on the south coast using histology and Ray’s fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM) assay to diagnose infection by the protozoan pathogen Perkinsus olseni. In September 2022, a total of 200 clams with shell length (SL) ranging from 29 to 50 mm were obtained from Gamakman Bay, and each clam was subjected to histology and RFTM assay. Histology revealed that all clams collected in September were in the resting stage, indicating that L. jedoensis in the study area completed spawning before September. Perkinsus olseni and unidentified trematode in the sporocysts stage were observed in histology with a low prevalence of 1.5% and 1%, respectively. Contrary to the histology, the RFTM assay indicated that 4.5% of the Jedo Venus clams examined in this survey were infected with P. olseni, with an average infection intensity of 1.1 x 104 cells/g gill, highlighting the presence of P. olseni in the area. The histology and RFTM assay suggested that P. olseni may not exert a substantial impact on Jedo Venus clam health, compared to Manila clams, the host of P. olseni occurring in the south coast exhibiting extremely high levels of P. olseni infection intensities and prevalence.

Design curves for prestressed concrete rectangular beam sections based on BS 8110

        Subramaniam, Kolluru V.L.,Sinha, S.N. Techno-Press 1995 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.3 No.6

Design curves have been prepared for prestressed rectangular beam section based on BS 8110, for determining area of steel for any given cross section, for stresses in concrete and steel and for the design moment. The design moment and the area of steel have been expressed in dimensionless form in terms of cross sectional dimensions and the characteristic strength of concrete. The choice and combination of design parameters result in considerably less number of curves as aid for design of rectangular prestressed beam sections, than those reported in CP 110 (Part 3).

An Outline of Meat Consumption in the Indian Population - A Pilot Review

        Subramaniam Mohana Devi,Vellingiri Balachandar,Sang In Lee,In Ho Kim 한국축산식품학회 2014 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.34 No.4

The consumption of meat is increasing in India and agriculture is considered as the backbone of a majority of people. Live-stock plays a significant role, and poultry and dairy are the major sectors contributing to economic development. The major-ity of meats consumed in India are fish, bovine, mutton, goat, pig, and poultry. In Indian context, culture, traditions, customs, and taboos influence meat consumption to a great extent. However, studies show that urbanization has been causing a risein demand for meat products. India is the world’s second largest exporter of beef. In India, 95% of goat meat produced isconsumed locally. Meat consumption, in particular, is determined by the religions where pork is forbidden to Muslims and beefis prohibited to Hindus. The preference and consumption of chicken meat can be considered as a universal phenomenon andchicken meat is greatly accepted by consumers in India as compared to the other meat consumption. The increase of chickenmeat consumption is due to the versatility of the meat, relatively low cost in comparison to other meat, and the acceptanceof the chicken meat to all religions. There has been a great rise in the production of livestock products and this is expectedto continue in the future. The pattern of meat consumption depends considerably on culture, tradition and urbanization. Thisreview was formulated with the objective of identifying the meat consumption patterns in a typical Indian society.

      • Presentation of Retinoblastoma Patients in Malaysia

Subramaniam, Shridevi,Rahmat, Jamalia,Rahman, Norazah Abdul,Ramasamy, Sunder,Bhoo-Pathy, Nirmala,Pin, Goh Pik,Alagaratnam, Joseph Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

Background: Retinoblastoma is a rare type of cancer that usually develops in early childhood. If left untreated it can cause blindness and even death. The aim of this study is to determine sociodemographic and clinical features of retinoblastoma patients and also to determine the treatment pattern and outcome in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: Data for this study were retrieved from the Retinoblastoma Registry of the National Eye Database (NED) in Malaysia. Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Umum Kuching, Sarawak and Hospital Queen Elizabeth, Kota Kinabalu were the major source data providers for this study. Data collected in the registry cover demography, clinical presentation, modes of treatment, outcomes and complications. Results: The study group consisted of 119 patients (162 eyes) diagnosed with retinoblastoma between 2004 and 2012. There were 68 male (57.1%) and 51 (42.9%) female. The median age at presentation was 22 months. A majority of patients were Malays (54.6%), followed by Chinese (18, 5%), Indians (8.4%), and indigenous races (15.9%). Seventy six (63.8%) patients had unilateral involvement whereas 43 patients had bilateral disease (36.1%). It was found that most children presented with leukocoria (110 patients), followed by strabismus (19), and protopsis (12). Among the 76 with unilateral involvement (76 eyes), enucleation was performed for a majority (79%). More than half of these patients had extraocular extension. Of the 40 who received chemotherapy, 95% were given drugs systemically. Furthermore, in 43 patients with bilateral involvement (86 eyes), 35 (41%) eyes were enucleated and 17 (49%) showed extraocular extension. Seventy-two percent of these patients received systemic chemotherapy. The patients were followed up 1 year after diagnosis, whereby 66 were found to be alive and 4 dead. Sixteen patients defaulted treatment and were lost to follow-up, whereas follow-up data were not available in 33 patients. Conclusions: Patients with retinoblastoma in this middle-income Asian setting are presenting at late stages. As a result, a high proportion of patients warrant aggressive management such as enucleation. We also showed that a high number of patients default follow-up. Therefore, reduction in refusal or delay to initial treatment, and follow-up should be emphasized in order to improve the survival rates of retinoblastoma in this part of the world.

MACRO LEVEL DRIVERS OF GLOBALIZATION IN INDIAN AND CHINESE SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

Subramaniam Ananthram,Cecil Pearson People&Global Business Association 2007 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.12 No.3

Cross-border trade across disappearing geographic boundaries has been the most important factor that has led to the intensification of economic globalization in the past two decades. Major political, legal and economic reform measures at the national level have been the driving force for economic globalization across developed and developing countries across the globe. In the services industry, generally, reforms at the national level include government controlled deregulation of industries, foreign investment allowances and licencing. These government led reforms have been pivotal towards the global resurgence in the demand and provision of services across the global marketplace. It is contended in this paper that there are three other forces, besides 'government' enablers that are necessitating these changes at the national level. These forces are 'market', 'cost', and competition. Collectively, these four forces shape globalization. The impact and importance of these forces was examined with data that were obtained from a study with indigenous managers employed in the service industry in China (n = 210) and India (n = 239). Employing a pluralist (quantitative and qualitative procedures) design, the data reveal market forces were of the most overall importance in both nations. However, for different service sectors, the impact and intenstity of the principal force varied. Experimental evidence obtained from indigenous service industy managers in India and China through qualitative focus groups and one-on-one interviews are utilized to explain and justify the quantitative rankings in the discussion section. Further, the implications of the findings for global business are elucidated in the concluding section.
