<P> Epigenetic control is required to maintain competency for the activation and suppression of genes during cell division. The association between regulatory proteins and target gene loci during mitosis is a parameter of the epigenetic control that sustains the transcriptional regulatory machinery that perpetuates gene-expression signatures in progeny cells. The mitotic retention of phenotypic regulatory factors with cell cycle, cell fate, and tissue-specific genes supports the coordinated control that governs the proliferation and differentiation of cell fate and lineage commitment. </P>

<P>There is growing awareness that the fidelity of gene expression necessitates coordination of transcription factor metabolism and organization of genes and regulatory proteins within the three-dimensional context of nuclear architecture. The regulatory machinery that governs genetic and epigenetic control of gene expression is compartmentalized in nuclear microenvironments. Temporal and spatial parameters of regulatory complex organization and assembly are functionally linked to biological control and are compromised with the onset and progression of tumorigenesis. High throughput imaging of cells, tissues, and tumors, including live cell analysis, is expanding research's capabilities toward translating components of nuclear organization into novel strategies for cancer diagnosis and therapy.</P>
Deterrence, interdependence and Sino–US peace

Nuclear deterrence and economic interdependence are key factors in cost calculations underpinning decisions on war or peace between states. This paper combines deterrence and interdependence in a proposed theory of major power peace, with reference to a number of insightful works on the ongoing transition of power from the US to a rising China. The paper explores the hypothesis that as long as the US and China can deter each other with a combination of conventional and nuclear forces, and refrain from actions to drastically reduce their economic dependence on each other, there is little risk of war between them. Peace will be further secured if important third party countries, notably Japan, remain covered by US extended deterrence and integrated economically with both China and the USA through trade and transnational production chains. Only if the US, Chinese or Japanese governments take politically motivated actions to radically reduce their economic dependence on one another are they likely to engage in a security competition of sufficient intensity to generate an arms race and a substantial risk of war. This does not just hold for all-out war but for limited war as well, given the risk of escalation.
WHAT IS IT THAT BEST EXPLAINS: THE EAST ASIAN PEACE SINCE 1979? A CALL FOR A RESEARCH AGENDA

This article discusses how historians and social scientists may go about seeking to explain the relative absence of war in East Asia since 1979, after a period of three decades when East Asia was the world’s most war-prone region. Many have discussed the European Peace, only few the East Asian one, which calls for both similar and quite different explanations. The article does not present findings from research already made, but rather calls for a research agenda, aiming to solicit sponsors and contributors around the world who would like to take part in its development. The purpose will not just be to understand the past, but also to discuss what it may take to protect, deepen, and sustain peace in East Asia at a time of economic upheaval and a likely continued, perhaps accelerated shift of economic as well as military power from North America and Europe to East Asia. Fremdsprachliche Lese- und Leseverstehensprozesse sind bisher vornehmlich unter dem – zweifellos eminent wichtigen – Aspekt der Inhaltsentnahme und der dabei ablaufenden Verarbeitungsprozesse auf der formal-sprachlichen und der konzeptuellen Ebene thematisiert worden. Das gilt sowohl für die Leseforschung als auch – mit wenigen Ausnahmen - für die fremdsprachliche Lesedidaktik. Dennoch ist die Annahme plausibel, dass zumindest für höherstufige Verarbeitungsformen des „verstehenden“ oder des performativen „deutenden“ Lesens die Tatsache eine wichtige Rolle spielt, dass ein konstitutives Merkmal jedes Textes seine Zuordnung zu soziokulturell konstituierten Gattungen (Genres) bildet, wie sie von sprachwissenschaftlicher Seite v.a. unter je nach Ansatz unterschiedlich gefassten Begriffen wie Textsorte, Textmuster, Texttyp konzeptualisiert werden. Ich möchte daher im Folgenden am Beispiel der Arbeit mit dem journalistischen Genre der Kurzmeldungen an einigen Beispielen zeigen, wie sich im fortgeschrittenen DaF-Unterricht Gattungsmerkmale thematisieren und – so die Annahme – vermitteln lassen. Diese „Arbeit am Genre“ ordnet sich ein in den Kontext einer fremdsprachendidaktischen Konzeption, die ich als literazitätsorientierte Didaktik bezeichne und deren Motivierung und theoretische Hintergründe ich an anderer Stelle ausführlicher zu erläutern versucht habe. Gattungen als relativ stabile, soziokulturell erzeugte, komplexe Gesamtmuster der routinisierten Lösung wiederkehrender kommunikativer Probleme bzw. Aufgaben bilden einen elementaren Bestandteil der kommunikativen Ressourcen, die den Mitgliedern einer lebensweltlichen Gemeinschaft als tradiertes Wissen zur Verfügung stehen. Wenn der Begriff der Literazität sich u.a. auf eben solches Wissen über symbolische Praktiken und Muster der Praxis der Aushandlung von Handlungs- und Bedeutungskonstitution bezieht, muss sich eine literazitätsorientierte Didaktik ganz wesentlich mit kommunikativen Genres beschäftigen, indem sie – neben der pädagogisch anschlussfähigen Beschreibung der Außen- und Binnenstrukturen relevanter Genres v.a. Aufgaben und Übungen entwickelt, die geeignet sind, Lernenden dieses Wissen zugänglich zu machen und es nutzbringend und routinisiert einsetzen zu lernen im Rahmen auf die jeweiligen Handlungszuammenhänge bezogen effektiver Rezeptions- und Produktionspraktiken sowie metakognitiver Verfahren der Steuerung eigener kommunikativer Praxis und Aneignung kommunikativer Kompetenzen.
