      • Understand the e-waste contribution and people’s recycling behaviour in Hong Kong through a territory-wide recycling programme for USB cables

        Mobile phones have become one of the most indispensable items of our daily life. People normally have the practice of reselling their old phones or other electronic devices because of their high value. However, the USB cables normally come with these gadgets are always forgotten. As the USB cables are made of plastics and metals, it would be a waste of resources if they were sent to the landfill directly. There is a lack of data and studies regarding the amount of USB cable waste, and people’s handling and disposing habits of them in Hong Kong. This action-cum-research project, namely “Off-lines”, therefore aims to raise people’s awareness on e-waste beginning with a type of waste that everyone has, that is USB cable, and to fill in the research gap on people’s awareness and knowledge on this kind of e-waste. One hundred and fifty collection points were set up all over Hong Kong by this project and successfully collected over 7,700 unwanted cables from the public. This project also conducted a questionnaire survey from February 2022 to May 2022 and received 457 valid responses from the public. The results of the questionnaires show that nearly 70% of respondents do not know USB cables can be recycled. The three major reasons for not recycling USB cable are: 1) Not knowing any collection points (71%); 2) Lack of knowledge on USB cable recycling (67%); and 3) Inconvenient and insufficient collection points (67%). Upcycling workshops were also organised not only to provide a chance for the participants to have hands-on experience on making knots with USB cables, but also to inspire them to think out of the box and give any unwanted item a second life. Feedback from the public and also the business sector found the project very meaningful and successfully heightened the public awareness on e-waste issues. Collaboration with green groups and other partnering organisations should be extended to provide wider and immersive networks for collecting unwanted USB cables or other cables.

        Research has been conducted to understand the unique needs (Wilson, 2004), learning styles (Howe & Strauss, 2000), and attitudes (Rooney, 2003) of millennial college students. While much has been offered as evidence that the characteristics for students born between1985 and 2005 differ substantially from their predecessors, some debate challenges the differentiation of millennial students (Hoover, 2009). Because teacher expectations influence student performance and achievement, perceptions of university faculty toward current millennial undergraduate students could affect learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe how university instructors view millennial undergraduate students in their classrooms using Q method as a research strategy. Using motivational and creative student characteristics, 36 items were sorted by 18 higher education professionals who work directly with undergraduate students under the condition of instruction "How would you describe undergraduate college students?" Results indicated a three-factor solution, interpreted as Social Performer, Minimal Achiever, and Playful Learner or viewing students as reliant on social interaction, doing the least amount of work to succeed, or ready to learn in nontraditional ways, respectively. Implications for educational and institutional practice are presented. 이 연구는 1978년생 이후의 대학생들의 독특한 수요(Wilson, 2004), 학습 방법(Howe & Strauss, 2000), 그리고 태도(Rooney, 2003)를 연구하고자 하였다. 1985년과 2005년 사이에 태어난 학생들의 특징이 이전의 학생들과 다르다는 연구를 뒷받침할 만한 많은 증거들이 제시되었지만, 몇몇 학자들은 이 그룹의 학생들이 다르다는 주장에 반대한다. 왜냐하면, 교사의 기대는 학생의 수행과 성취도에 영향을 미치고, 이 그룹의 학생들에 대한 대학 교수들의 인식 또한 학습 결과에 영향을 미칠 수 있기 때문이다. 이 연구의 목적은 대학 교수들이 이 그룹의 학생들을 어떤 시각으로 바라보는지를 Q 방법론을 이용하여 조사하는 것이다. 동기를 부여할 수 있고 창의적인 학생의 특징들을 활용하여, 대학생들과 직접적으로 교류하는 18명의 대학 교육 관련 전문가들에게 "대학생들을 어떻게 묘사할 수 있습니까" 라는 질문을 던져, 36개의 진술을 얻었다. 결과는 3가지 결과로 압축되었는데, 그 3가지는 사회적인 활동가, 최소한의 성취도를 보이는 사람, 즐기며 배우는 사람, 즉 사회적 상호작용에 의존하며 학위를 위해 최소한의 공부만 하거나 또는 기존의 방식과는 다르지만 그들의 방식대로 공부할 준비가 된 사람으로 분류한다. 교육적 결과와 대학 기관의 관심이 모두 제시되었다.

        A Review of Dietary Fiber and Health: Focus on Raisins

        Fibers vary in their physiologic effects. For example, viscous fibers may delay gastric emptying of ingested foods into the small intestine, creating a sensation of fullness; reduce blood glucose concentrations; and potentially benefit insulin sensitivity. They also improve blood cholesterol levels. Insoluble fibers are poorly absorbed and are known to improve fecal bulk and laxation and ameliorate constipation. Despite these numerous benefits, most Americans do not get enough of either kind of fiber in the diet. Some have argued that fiber-rich foods are not appetizing and therefore avoided. Raisins contain both forms of fiber and have a sweet flavor. This review provides support for consuming adequate fiber in the diet and suggests a role for raisins to help increase total dietary fiber.

        An Experimental Study on the Effect of Domain Expertise on the Consistency of Relevance Judgements

        An online experiment was conducted to test the subject-knowledge view of relevance theory in order to find evidence of a conceptual basis for relevance. Six experts in Library and Information Science (LIS), nine Master’s students of LIS, and twelve non-experts judged the relevance of 14 abstracts within and outside of the LIS domain. Consistency among the judges was calculated by joint-probability agreement (PA) and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC). When using PA to analyze the judgements, non-experts had a higher consensus regardless of the task or division of groups. However, ICC calculations found Master’s candidates had a higher level of consensus than non-experts within LIS, although the experts did not; and the agreement rates on the non-LIS task for all groups were only poor to moderate. It was only when the groups were analyzed as two groups (experts including Master’s candidates and non-experts) that the expected trend of higher consistency among experts in the LIS task was seen.

        The spread of COVID-19 changes consumer preferences and behaviors greatly across the world. Extant literature has demonstrated that when there is a threat to disease, people stay away from those who do not seem healthy as they can be potentially infectious. Based on the previous literature, this research shows that individuals exposed to disease threat avoid products of which designs are high in visual complexity. When disease threat was present, individuals had lower purchase intention for products with complex designs. The perceived uncleanliness mediated the effect of visual complexity and disease threat on purchase intention. The findings provide a novel insight into the effect of disease salience on consumer perception of product design.

        유명인 자녀 광고에서 사회경제적 계층이동성이 제품태도와 구매의향에 미치는 영향: 준사회적 관계 인식의 매개효과를 중심으로

        최근 매스미디어 및 소셜미디어 등을 통해 유명인들의 자녀가 인플루언서(influencer)로 자리잡고 있다. 이러한 추세에 따라 기업들은 자사 제품 광고에 유명인 자녀들을 광고 모델로 기용하고 있다. 유명인 자녀를 광고 모델로 활용하는 것은 유명인이 가진 긍정적인 이미지와 인기를 그들의 자녀에게 전이(spillover)시켜 보다 넓은 소비 계층에게서 긍정적인 반응을 이끌어 낼 수 있는 장점이 있다. 하지만 동시에 소비자들로 하여금 지위의 세습이나 적절하지 않은 성공의 방식이라는 반발심이나 상대적 박탈감 등의 부정적 반응을 일으키게 할 가능성도 내포하고 있다. 본 연구는 유명인 자녀의 광고 출현에 대한 소비자 태도에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로 사회경제적 계층이동성 개념을 제안한다. 연구 결과, 사회 계층 간 이동성이 활발하다고 인식하는 소비자일수록 유명인 자녀가 광고하는 제품에 대해 보다 호의적인 반응을 나타냄을 발견하였다. 더 나아가, 이상의 관계는 유명인 자녀와의 준사회적 관계(parasocial relationship) 인식에 의해 매개됨을 증명하였다. 이상의 연구 결과는 유명인 자녀의 광고 효과에 대해 탐구한 최초의 연구로서, 주로 유명인 본인과 일반인에 국한하여 탐구된 기존의 광고 연구 결과를 확장하고 있다. 더 나아가, 마케팅 영역에서는 활발하게 탐구되지 않았으나 시의적으로 주목 받는 개념인 사회경제적 계층이동성 인식이라는 개념을 탐구함으로써 학계에 공헌하고 있다. Recently, “children of celebrities” have become new influencers through social and mass media. This trend is reflected by brands inviting these children as endorsers in their advertising. While children of celebrities as advertising endorsers can generate favorable responses across wider consumer segments from the spillover effect of the positive images and fame of their parents, they can also generate negative responses such as a sense of deprivation from inherited success and wealth. This research suggests that consumers’ perceived social mobility can maximize the potential positive effects of advertising endorsed by children of celebrities. Specifically, consumers who believe in high social mobility are more likely to show positive responses (e.g., attitudes, purchase intention, information search intention) to brands endorsed by children of celebrities. In addition, this positive link between social mobility and consumer responses to brands endorsed by children of celebrities is mediated by the perceived parasocial relationship with the children. To our knowledge, this research is the first to demonstrate the effects of advertising endorsed by children of celebrities, and extends on the existing findings which mainly focused on celebrities and non-celebrities. Furthermore, this research sheds light on the effects of social mobility, which is highly relevant to consumers’ lives but has not yet been well examined in the marketing literature.

      • pH and ionic strength alter the fate of a suspension concentrate formulation of β-cyfluthrin and its exposure to Daphnia magna

        A response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate how pH and ionic strength (IS) affect the fate (i.e. size and colloidal stability) of an SC formulation containing the pyrethroid β-cyfluthrin. The response surfaces determined under a range of environmentally relevant conditions were then used to assess the toxicity of the SC formulation of β-cyfluthrin to D. magna. The changes in hydrodynamic diameter (HDD) and colloidal stability as determined by zeta potential measurement were closely related to either or both of the change in pH and IS with the linear factor of IS being the most significant factor affecting those changes. Thus, the concentration of SC formulation of β-cyfluthrin remaining in the water column was dependent on the pH and IS conditions and highest when the colloidal suspension contained small particles or a lack of agglomeration leading to sedimentation of the particles. The toxicity results show correspondingly higher toxicity to D. magna when exposed to the SC formulation of β-cyfluthrin when pH and IS conditions favor formation of either the smallest HDD or most stable colloidal suspensions.
