        War and Masculinity in A Farewell to Arms

        A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway portrays the struggles of Frederic Henry, an American soldier working as an ambulance driver in the Italian army during World War I. Frederic joins the war in an attempt to prove his masculinity, but in a war where traditional ideals have become no longer attainable, largely due to the war’s lack of validation, men not only lost their reason to fight, but along with it their masculinity that had been promised to them as they signed up for the war. The first section looks into the masculine dilemma. Frederic represents the men struggling to conform to traditional standards of masculinity in a war they have already been disillusioned with. Frederic struggles to keep himself in war, and strains to suppress his emotions that are considered a sign of weakness in men. As a way to alleviate himself from his discordant desires and also maintain a masculine exterior, Frederic resorts to drinking excessively. Alcohol, however, is a momentary diversion. Once the anesthetics wear off Frederic takes the next measure of forcing himself not to think. To remain committed to his duty, he tries to re-illusion himself to the legitimacy of war, ignores the validity of his own actions, and makes himself act like an instrument of the authorities. His efforts fall to no use when he is forced to leave war by the battle police. The second section looks into how Frederic attempts but fails to find his masculinity in war. Frederic is forced to live a life in hiding and ultimately flees to Switzerland to escape arrest. Even as a war fugitive, he is unable to relinquish a sense of guilt and obligation towards war as he searches for ways to employ himself. With no clear occupation he instead becomes increasingly passive and more dependent on his relationship with Catherine. Men joined the war with ambitions of becoming a man. Frederic’s tenacious struggle portrays how strongly the masculine ideal was engraved in the minds of men. Once in war, however, men found themselves emasculated and like Frederic, they were weakened by the war.

      • Attitude Dynamics Model-Based Gyroless Attitude Estimation for Agile Spacecraft

        With increasing demand for high-agility spacecraft, the importance of accurate attitude estimation in high-agility condition is gradually increasing. In previous high-cost spacecraft missions, high-quality gyroscopes were able to be employed and the conventional gyro-based Kalman filter has provided accurate attitude estimates. However, in low-cost missions such as CubeSat missions, high-quality gyroscopes usually cannot be adopted due to its expensive price and large size/power/mass, and this leads to performance degradation in high-agility condition. This proceeding presents a simple example that illustrates how high-agility condition induces performance degradation in a classical gyro-based Kalman filter framework. Then, an alternative attitude estimation method that is based on a model-based gyroless Kalman filter framework is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed gyroless filter could exhibit comparable attitude estimation performance, compared to the gyro-based filter, when gyro performance belongs to an industrial grade (such as MEMS gyros). The proposed gyroless filter could be implemented as a main attitude estimation method or as a backup estimation method, depending on available gyros’ performance.

        기계적으로 다른 환경에서 예쁜 꼬마선충의 기는 파형 변화

        예쁜 꼬마선충은 모델 생물로서 지금까지 행동과 이를 제어하는 신경세포들 사이의 관계를 밝히기 위한 많은 연구들이 수행되었다. 본 연구에서는 표면의 강성이 다른 고체 환경에서 꼬마선충의 운동관련 적응행동을 연구하였다. 꼬마선충은 고체 위에서 움직일 때 기는 파형을 조절함으로써 기계적으로 다른 환경에 적응을 한다. 즉, 외부환경이 더 단단해질수록 꼬마선충의 기는 파형의 진폭과 파장이 감소하게 된다. 흥미로운 사실은 기계적인 감각에 결함이 있는 돌연변이의 경우 정상 꼬마선충과는 다른 적응행동을 보인다는 것이다. 이것은 기계적으로 다른 환경에 효과적으로 적응하기 위해서 기계적인 자극을 감지하고 반응하고 적응하는 기작이 있음을 의미한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 꼬마선충이 기계적으로 다른 환경에 적응하는 과정을 설명할 수 있는 신경회로 모델을 제안하였다. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a widely used model organism in biological research. Thanks to the availability of well-established knowledge about its neural connectivity, a wide range of studies have been attempted to uncover the relationship between behaviors and the responsible neurons. In our research, the adaptive behavior of C. elegans in solid environments with different surface rigidities is investigated, where the worm adapts to different mechanical stiffnesses by modulating its crawling waveform. The amplitude and wavelength of the crawling waveform decrease as the environment becomes more rigid. Interestingly, the mechanosensation-defective mutant shows different responses to the surface rigidity compared to those of the wild-type worm. To explain the adaptation process in mechanically different environments, we suggest a plausible neural circuit model.

      • Adobe Illustrator 9.0을 이용한 의류용 텍스타일 디자인 개발 : 전통문양의 캐릭터화 사례를 응용하여

        This study is focused on apparel textile design process applying pre-developed Korean traditional motifs. Since the fusion culture is in trend, Orientalism or Oriental look is the center of attraction in fashion. Under the circumstances, developing the traditional resources as sophisticated Korean-style is the goal of the BK21 team. This study makes a move to achieve the goal. As n method of accomplishing this study, 4 trendy motif samples such as stylized letter, butterfly, peony, and female face are selected after investigating fashion magazines and fashion related websites. As a result pre-developed Korean traditional motifs are elected and revised using Adobe Illustrator 9.0. The newly revised motifs are applied to the textile pattern repeat farm. The completed textile patterns are simulated on the shawls to show their usages as one of souvenir items since the year of 2001 is the year of "Visit Korea" Key worlds: Korean traditional motifs(한국전통문양), fashion culture(퓨전문화), traditional resources(문화유산), textile pattern repeat form(텍스타일 패턴의 반복 배열 방법), souvenir items(관광상품).

        한국의 과학교육 종합 지표 개발 연구

        지능정보사회가 요구하는 역량 함양을 위해 과학교육의 중요성은 점차 강화되고 있으며, 과학교육에 대한 국가의 역할 및 책무성은 법으로 명시되어 있다. 과학교육을 효과적이고 효율적으로 지원하기 위해서는 관련 정책에 대한 지속적인 모니터링이 필수적이며, 이를 위해 과학교육의 현황을 종합적으로 분석하기 위한 지표 개발이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 과학교육 정책의 성과를 지속적이고 체계적으로 진단·점검할 수 있는 종합 지표를 개발하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 문헌연구를 토대로 ‘학습자’와 ‘과학교육 맥락’의 2개 차원과, ‘투입’, ‘과정’, ‘결과’의 3개 범주로 구성된 과학교육 종합 지표체제를 도출하였으며, 국내외에서 개발된 과학교육 관련 지표의 내용을 검토하여 지표의 요소와 세부요소를 도출하였다. 이후 과학교육연구, 초·중등 현장교육, 과학교육정책, 교육과정, 과학기술 분야의 전문가 25인을 대상으로 총 2회에 걸친 델파이 조사를 실시하여 지표의 체제와 요소의 적합성과 타당성을 검증하였으며, 과학교육 종합지표의 조사대상 및 조사도구를 확정하였다. 연구 결과, ‘투입’ 범주에 대해서는 ‘학생 특성’, ‘교사 특성’, ‘교육 인프라’의 3개 요소가 도출되었으며, ‘과정’ 범주에 대해서는 ‘과학 교육과정 운영’, ‘과학콘텐츠 보급 및 프로그램 운영’, ‘교사 전문성 신장 프로그램 운영’의 3개 요소가 도출되었고, ‘결과’ 범주에 대해서는 ‘과학 역량’, ‘참여와 실천’, ‘정의적 성취’, ‘인지적 성취’, ‘만족도’의 5개 요소가 도출되었다. 또한 학생, 교사, 교육청/기관으로부터 데이터를 수집할 수 있는 조사도구를 개발하였으며, 문항양호도 및 신뢰도를 검증하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 ‘과학교육 종합 지표’는 우리나라 과학교육의 여건, 성과, 인식 등을 종합적으로 측정할 수 있는 지표로서 보다 효율적이고 효과적인 과학교육 정책 수립 및 추진에 기여할 것으로 기대된다. The importance of science education for cultivating the competencies required by an intelligent information society is gradually being strengthened. The government’s roles and responsibilities for science education are stipulated by laws and policies in Korea. In order to systematically support science education, continuous monitoring of related policies is essential. This study aims to develop indicators that can be used to systematically and continuously monitor the national policies on science education in Korea. To achieve this goal, we first derive the framework for the indicators that has two dimensions (learner and science education context) and three categories (input, process, and outcome) from literature reviews. In order to derive the components and subcomponents of the indicators, the contents of science education-related indicators developed in Korea or abroad were reviewed. In order to verify the suitability and validity of the framework and components of the initial indicators, a two-round Delphi method was conducted with 25 expert participants with five different professions in science education. Finally, three components of the ‘input’ category (student characteristics, teacher characteristics, and educational infrastructure), three components of the ‘process’ category (science curriculum implementation, science educational contents and programs implementation, and teacher professional development program implementation), and five components of the ‘outcome’ category (science competency, participation and action, affective achievement, cognitive achievement, and satisfaction) were derived. An instrument to collect data from students, teachers, and institutions was developed based on the components and subcomponents, and content validity and internal consistency of the instrument were analyzed. Korea’s Science Education Indicators developed in this study can comprehensively measure the current status of science education and is expected to contribute to a more efficient and effective science education policy planning and implementation.

        Numerical Implementation of Representative Mobile Phone Models for Epidemiological Studies

        This paper describes an implementation method and the results of numerical mobile phone models representing real phone models that have been released on the Korean market since 2002. The aim is to estimate the electromagnetic absorption in the human brain for casecontrol studies to investigate health risks related to mobile phone use. Specific absorption rate (SAR) compliance test reports about commercial phone models were collected and classified in terms of elements such as the external body shape, the antenna, and the frequency band. The design criteria of a numerical phone model representing each type of phone group are as follows. The outer dimensions of the phone body are equal to the average dimensions of all commercial models with the same shape. The distance and direction of the maximum SAR from the earpiece and the area above –3 dB of the maximum SAR are fitted to achieve the average obtained by measuring the SAR distributions of the corresponding commercial models in a flat phantom. Spatial peak 1-g SAR values in the cheek and tilt positions against the specific anthropomorphic mannequin phantom agree with average data on all of the same type of commercial models. Second criterion was applied to only a few types of models because not many commercial models were available. The results show that, with the exception of one model, the implemented numerical phone models meet criteria within 30%.
