Antiviral activity of 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 against murine gammaherpesvirus
Soowon Kang,Kyungtaek Im,Geon Kim,Hyeyoung Min 고려인삼학회 2017 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.41 No.4
Background: Ginsenosides are the major components of Panax ginseng Meyer, an herbal medicine used for the treatment of various diseases. Different ginsenosides contribute to the biological properties of ginseng, such as antimicrobial, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties. In this study, we investigated the antiviral effects of 15 ginsenosides and compound K on gammaherpesvirus. Methods: The antiviral activity of ginsenosides was examined using the plaque-forming assay and by analyzing the expression of the lytic gene. Results: 20(R)-Ginsenoside Rh2 inhibited the replication and proliferation of murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68), and its half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) against MHV-68 was estimated to be 2.77 mM. In addition, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 inhibited 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced lytic replication of human gammaherpesvirus in the Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus(KSHV)-positive cell line BC3. Conclusion: Our results indicate that 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh2 can inhibit the replication of mouse and human gammaherpesviruses, and thus, has the potential to treat gammaherpesvirus infection.
Comparative study of goal contents and goal characteristics between medical and business students
Soowon Park,Ji Eun Kim,Jun-Young Lee,Jongho Shin 한국의학교육학회 2016 Korean journal of medical education Vol.28 No.1
Purpose: Medical and business are one of the most popular majors among students, and both fields require intensive training to reach certain level of expertise. During the development of professionalism, goal can become a crucial role in psychological impetus. The purpose of this study is to compare goal contents, goal characteristics, and effect of goal characteristics on student’s major satisfaction between medical and business. Methods: A total of 193 undergraduate students (97 medical students, 96 business students) answered survey questions including goal contents, goal characteristics (goal autonomy, goal attainability, social value of goal) and satisfaction on their majors. Qualitative analysis of goal contents and quantitative analysis of goal characteristics, and their effects on student major satisfaction were performed. Results: Goal content analysis showed percentage of social concern goal was higher in medical students (25.8%) than business students (6.3%), whereas percentage of wealth goal was higher business students (24.0%) than medical students (3.1%). Among goal characteristics, goal attainability and social value of goal were higher in medical students than business students. In both groups, social value of goal was significantly predict major satisfaction. Conclusion: Goal contents and goal characteristics are different between medical and business students. Curriculum and educational interventions that concerning students’ goal and developing programs to enhance students’ social value of goal is necessary.
LepTree - A Genomics-Inspired Community Collaboration

Lepidoptera includes over 160,000 species of butterflies and moths worldwide. They have enormous ecological and economic impact as pests, pollinators, and food sources for other organisms. We are using Assembling the Tree of Life (AToL) NSF funding t 1. generate a backbone phylogeny of the entire order, 2. date major subclade divergence by re-evaluating fossils (fossil project), 3. create a rich taxonomic resource (taxon template) and 4. create a glossary of morphological terms and associated images to synergize tree-building using morphological characters - all within a worldwide online venue. Our project goal is to galvanize the broader lepidopterist community towards constructing a comprehensive and fully resolved tree. Here we present the fossil project, taxon template and morphology projects.

Carposinidae Walsingham, 1897 심식나방과 Carposina Herrich-Schaffer, 1853 coreana Kim, 1955 산수유심식나방(개칭) sasakii Matsumura, 1900 복숭아섬석나방 Commatarcha Meyrick, 1935 vaga Diakonoff, 1989 흰점검은심식나방 (신칭) Meridarchis Zeller, 1867 excisa (Walsingham, 1900) 어깨무늬심석나방 (신칭) jumboa Kawabe, 1980 삼각무늬심석나방 (신칭) Five species belonging to three genera of Carposinidae are recognized, and their wing patterns and male and female genitalic structures are redescribed with known distributions and biologies. a genus, Meridarchis, and two species, M. excisa and M. jumboa are reported for the first time from Korea. Carposina niponensis and Commatarcha palaeosema are misidentifications of Carposina sasakii and Commatarcha vaga, respectively. The neotype of Carposina coreana Kim is designated with the specimen collected from the type locality.

Deliberately Unequal Gene Sampling, A Design of Molecular Studies Tested in Lepidoptera
Soowon Cho,Andreas Zwick,Jerome Regier,Charles Mitter,Michael Cummings,Jianxiu Yao,Zaile Du,Hong Zhao,Akito Kawahara,Susan Weller,Donald Davis,Joaquin Baixeras,John Brown,Cynthia Parr 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.05
Seeking to improve the weak resolution of deeper divergences in an initial study based on five nuclear genes (6.6kb total) in 123 exemplars, we nearly tripled the total sequence (to 26 genes, 18.4 kb total) in one third (41) of the taxa. The expanded, deliberately incomplete data matrix consistently increased bootstrap support for previously-identified groupings, while introducing no contradictory groupings of the kind that missing data have been predicted to produce. To test the relative effectiveness of “more genes” versus “more taxa” sind that we compared two largely complete matrices, the initial 5 gene × 123 taxon and the 26 gene × 41 taxon data sets, that contain roughly equal amounts of sequence. The “more genes” data set yielded consistently, sometimes dramatically higher bootstrap support that is generally not attributable to taxon number alone. We also found that a gene-rich taxon subset provides reassuring evidence of strong underlying signal that is not obvious in subsequent larger analyses, helping to encourage and guide the search for deep relationships amid the noise of expanded taxon sampling.
Ginseng, the 'Immunity Boost': The Eff ects of Panax ginseng on Immune System
Soowon Kang,Hyeyoung Min 고려인삼학회 2012 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.36 No.4
Thousands of literatures have described the diverse role of ginseng in physiological processes such as cancer, neurodegenera tive disorders, insulin resistance, and hypertension. In particular, ginseng has been extensively reported to maintain homeostasis of the immune system and to enhance resistance to illness or microbial attacks through the regulation of immune system. Immune system comprises of different types of cells fulfi lling their own specialized functions, and each type of the immune cells is differentially infl uenced and may be simultaneously controlled by ginseng treatment. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the effects of ginseng on immune system. We discuss how ginseng regulates each type of immune cells including macrophages, natural killer cells, dendritic cells, T cells, and B cells. We also describe how ginseng exhibits benefi cial effects on controlling infl ammatory diseases and microbial infections.
