Design and Modeling of Multistage Depressed Collectors by Using 3D Conformal Finite-difference Time-domain Particle-in-cell Simulations

The feasibility of designing and modeling a multistage depressed collector (MDC) by using 3D conformal finite-difference time-domain (CFDTD) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations as implemented in 3D PIC code, VORPAL has been studied. A simple circuit model employing feedback mechanisms has been implemented to provide stable time-dependent voltages for each stage of the depressed collector, and an arbitrary space-time dependent spent-beam distribution is given in our timedomain simulations. We demonstrate the design of a five-stage depressed collector recovering a triangular-like spent-beam distribution imported from a large signal simulation, achieving an energy recovery efficiency of 75%. The MDC after optimization can be integrated into the limited space of an S-band traveling wave tube for a compact microwave power module (MPM).

A catalogue of the fauna of Korean Xyleborine species is provided with information on the Korean records,local and world distribution and taxonomy. Two new combinations, Euwallacea praevius (Blandford) comb. nov. and Dryocoeteslongipilus (Eggers) comb. nov. (both from Xyleborus), are given. The record of Euwallacea minutusis removed from the Korean fauna.

Proceedings from the Ice Hockey Summit III: Action on Concussion

Objectives: The Ice Hockey Summit III provided updated scientific evidence on concussions in hockey to inform these five objectives: (1) describe sport related concussion (SRC) epidemiology, (2) classify prevention strategies, (3) define objective, diagnostic tests, (4) identify treatment and (5) integrate science and clinical care into prioritized action plans and policy. Methods: Our action plan evolved from 40 scientific presentations. The 155 attendees (physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nurses, neuropsychologists, scientists, engineers, coaches and officials) voted to prioritize these action items in the final Summit session. Results: (1) establish a national and international hockey data base for SRCs at all levels; (2) eliminate body checking in Bantam youth hockey games; (3) expand a behavior modification program (Fair Play) to all youth hockey levels; (4) enforce game ejection penalties for fighting in Junior A and professional hockey leagues; (5) establish objective tests to diagnose concussion at point of care (POC); and (6) mandate baseline testing to improve concussion diagnosis for all age groups. Conclusions: Expedient implementation of the Summit III prioritized action items is necessary to reduce the risk, severity and consequences of concussion in the sport of ice hockey.

Sublingual Dexmedetomidine for the Treatment of Agitation in Patients with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Acute agitation is common amongst individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and represents a medical emergency. Commonly used medications for agitation, such as benzodiazepines and antipsychotics, are often delivered intramuscularly and may cause adverse effects. Non-invasive, effective, and safe alternative treatment options are needed. The purpose of this review article is to describe the efficacy and safety of sublingual formulation of dexmedetomidine (Igalmi), a selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved for the treatment of acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I and II disorder. In two phase 3 trials, two dose strengths of sublingual dexmedetomidine 180 μg and 120 μg were safe and effective in managing acute agitation in patients with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Both doses significantly reduced Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale-Exited Component scores two hours after receiving a single dose as compared to placebo, indicating a substantial improvement in agitation. The beneficial effects of sublingual dexmedetomidine were achieved without serious adverse events with the most common side effect being mild somnolence. The clinical trial data suggest that sublingual dexmedetomidine represents a safe and effective treatment option in the armamentarium for acute agitation for people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Catalyzing social media scholarship with open tools and data

Social media comprises a vast and consequential landscape that has been poorly mapped and understood. Hundreds of millions of people have eagerly moved many of the conversations and discussions that compose civil society into these services and platforms. There is a need to document and analyze these social spaces for many academic and commercial purposes. The Social Media Research Foundation has engaged a strategy to cultivate better research into the structure and dynamics of social media. The foundation is dedicated to the creation of open tools, open data, and open scholarship related to social media. It has implemented a free and open network collection, analysis, and visualization tool called NodeXL to facilitate social media network research. Using NodeXL a group of researchers has collectively authored a publicly available archive, called the NodeXL Graph Gallery, composed of network data sets and visualizations from users around the world. This site has enabled the aggregation of tens of thousands of network datasets and images. Use of the archive has led to scholarly research results that are based on the wide range and scope of social media data sets available.

영국의 새로운 정치상황은 영국이 지 금 새로운 스코틀랜드 의회가 성공할 것이라는 확신을 한다는 것을 의미한다. 스코틀랜드의 해결책은 노동당정부의 정책에 대한 주요 강렁에 의존한다. 오랫동안 지방자치를 반대해 온 중앙정부는 스코 틀랜드의 성공을 위한 경험을 필요로 한다. 즉 영국이 달성할 수 있는 헌법적 변화에 대한 폭 넓은 계획이 필요하다. 신문은 스스로가 원위치로 가려 할 것이다. 언론은 과거의 여론 활동이 가치 있었다는 것을 증명하기 위해 권한이양의 긍정적인 측면을 강조하려 할 것이다. 그러나 이를 위해서 언론은 정책결정과 의회의 정치적 행윈에 대한 동일한 엄격함을 적용시켜야만 할 것 이다. 그래서 언론은 동시에 지지도 할 수 있고 비판도 할 수 있게 될 것이다. 나는 언론이 성공적이었다고 생각한다. 아일랜드, 노르웨이, 스웨 덴, 네덜란드 같은 작은 나라에서의 언론은 국가 정체성의 중요성을 생각하게 했고 자치원칙을 목적으로 하는 강력한 지지를 제공했다. 그러나 정부의 사업에 대한 보도에 있어서 정직을 약속하지 못했다. 스코틀랜드에서의 사고의 형성은 정부에 반대하거나 대안을 지지 하는 것중의 하나였다. 현재 상황은 변하고 있으며 많은 언론인들의 태도는 동시에 변해야만 한다. 언론은 천년왕국까지 그들의 접근을 고찰하여야 한다 1999년 계회된 선거를 통해, 새로운 의회는 2000 년 여름에 개원될 것이다. 이것은 스코틀랜드인들을 위한 역사적인 순간이 될 것이다.

I look at the respective responsibilities of different components of the language faculty in the description of two radically different kinds of linguistic phenomenon. The first is the production/perception mismatch in the child's acquisition of the phonology of its first language. There is strong evidence that the child's lexical representations are the same as the adult's, but I argue that the child's own pronunciations, have no linguistic status and are best treated as the product of a neural network. The second is the nature of compositionality, where I argue that compositionality in Natural Language is derivative from that in the Language of Thought. With this assumption and using evidence from quantification in ‘backward control’ structures, I argue that chain theory is intrinsically inimical to a simple view of the legibility relation between LF and LoT.
