Cadmium removal by Anabaena doliolum Ind1 isolated from a coal mining area in Meghalaya, India
Smita Goswami,Mayashree B. Syiem,Kannan Pakshirajan 대한환경공학회 2015 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.20 No.1
The cyanobacterium Anabaena doliolum Ind1 isolated from a coal mining site was tested for removal of cadmium at optimum pH 7.0 and temperature 25°C. The organism recorded high percentage of metal removal (92-69%) within seven days of exposure to 0.5-2.0 ppm cadmium. Biosorption onto the cell surface was the primary mode of metal removal. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) established hydroxyl, amides, carboxyl, sulphate and carbonyl groups to be the major functional groups on the cell surface involved in cadmium binding. Cellular ultrastructure and a range of vital physiological processes (i.e., photosynthetic pigments, respiration, photosynthesis, heterocyst frequency and nitrogenase activity) remained unaffected upon 0.5 ppm treatment; higher concentrations of cadmium exerted visible adverse effects. Amongst the five photosynthetic pigments tested, phycocyanin was the most targeted pigment (inhibition was 15-89%). Both respiration and photosynthetic activities were inhibited by cadmium with more severe effect seen on respiration. 2.0 ppm cadmium exposure also had drastic negative effect on nitrogenase activity (87% decreased).
Mixed Matrix PVA-GO-TiO2 Membranes for the Dehydration of Isopropyl Alcohol by Pervaporation
Smita Gupta,Ganesh B. Thorat,Z.V.P. Murthy 한국고분자학회 2020 Macromolecular Research Vol.28 No.6
In the current work, mixed matrix membranes of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)- graphene oxide (GO)-titanium dioxide (TiO2) were prepared using a solvent evaporation technique for the separation of isopropyl alcohol from its azeotropic mixture with water by pervaporation. In this work, the effects of the feed water concentration in the range of 10%-40% and the feed temperature of 50-80 oC have been investigated. The characterization of membranes was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the contact angle measurements. The Arrhenius activation energy for permeation was determined to be in the range of 8-12.8 kJ/mol. The results of the diffusion coefficient values and the Arrhenius activation energy parameters showed that the waterselectivity was improved at higher concentrations of GO-TiO2.
Widening Women’s Space through Land Rights
Smita Magar 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2016 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2016 No.7
How a patriarchal society understands the concept of space seems to determine women’s access to their land rights. This understanding of women space can limit women from realizing their full potentiality as it prevents or discourages them from accessing opportunities that are in public space. In a patriarchal society, women space is mostly within the household, i.e. a private space. While, for men, their space is mostly thought to be of/in public space. The land, in general understanding is a public space. Currently, in Nepal, 60% of women are involved in land; but only about 19% of women have land in their names. The reason for this is due to the discriminatory construction of ‘women space’ in the patriarchal society. Where she belongs? What is she allowed to have as a property? Or through whom she is entitled for the property determines her place and space in the family and the society. This means women are constrained due to the concept of space entitled to them. Along with it, they are exposed to different forms of vulnerabilities and exploitation. So, to empower women, the space where most of them are involved or engaged has to be targeted. The land where they are working, if can legally be made theirs with their full ownership and access, the private space of women will slowly widen to public space. This will eventually lead to breaking the boundaries created by patriarchal societies to limit women participation in public space. With this argument, in this paper, I will focus on how ensuring land rights in agricultural country like Nepal can be a tool for women empowerment, widening their role in the public space and reducing the gender gap. The paper is mainly based on my observation during field research in Nawalparasi district of Nepal. It will also get its ideas supported through different scholars’ arguments and writings.

In this work, extraction of bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solutions by hollow fiber supported liquid membrane is studied. The study had focused on the effects of various parameters, viz., hydrodynamic conditions, type of diluent, feed- and stripping- phase concentrations. Response surface method was adopted to determine the interactive effect of feed and stripping phase concentrations on BPA transport. At optimum conditions, 96% BPA extraction is achieved from aqueous solutions within 9.0 h cycle-time. A mass transfer model was developed, and the aqueous and membrane resistances were evaluated to be 5.78 × 102 s cm-1 and 5.85 × 104 s cm-1, respectively.
On Factors Involving Almost Increasing Sequence
Smita Sonker,Rozy Jindal 한국전산응용수학회 2021 Journal of Applied and Pure Mathematics Vol.3 No.3
In this paper, absolute Riesz summability |\overline{N},p_n ; \delta|_q for an infinite series has been introduced and a generalized theorem has been determined for |\overline{N},p_n ; \delta|_q summability under the poor conditions for \sum a_n\lambda_n. Also, from our main result, we develop some new and well-known arbitrary results. These results are stated in the form of corollaries and can be proved by using appropriate conditions. Summability techniques are used to reduce inaccuracy. By using the appropriate conditions previous results can be easily obtained. Like this, the Bounded Input Bounded Output (BIBO) stoutness of drive is enhanced by absolute summability because it is a necessary and sufficient condition for BIBO stability.
Application of quasi-f-power increasing sequence in vert C, alpha, gamma;delta vert_k summability
Smita Sonker,Alka Munjal 장전수학회 2019 Proceedings of the Jangjeon mathematical society Vol.22 No.1
An increasing quasi-power sequence of a wider class has been used to establish a universal theorem on a least set of conditions, which is sucient for an innite series to be generalized absolute jC; ; ; jk summable. Further, a set of new and well-known arbitrary results have been obtained by using the main theorem. Considering suitable conditions a previous result has been obtained, which validates the current ndings. In this way, the Bounded Input Bounded Output (BIBO) stability of impulse response has been improved by absolute summability because being absolute summable is the necessary and sucient condition for BIBO stability. Also, summability plays an important role in signal processing as a digital lter in nite impulse response (FIR).
