      • The Northern Sea Routes and Korea's Trade with Europe: Implications for Korea's Shipping Industry

        Melting Arctic waters have brought about global opportunities and challenges. One distinctive opportunity presented by the increasingly ice-free Arctic Ocean is its availability for shipping cargos between Europe and Asia. In adopting highly simplified assumptions of the Northern Sea Route(NSR) being navigable and economical enough for shipping and NSR completely substituting for the incumbent Suez Canal route, this paper analyzes the maximum number of voyages possible for the transshipment of container cargo throughput for Korea's trade with Europe, particularly with Europe-17 and Europe-7. Our analysis shows the number of voyages range from over 2,900 to as little as 237 for Europe-17, depending on vessel sizes, when NSR is available for the whole year. With NSR opening for three months, the corresponding figures vary between 727 and 60 for Europe-17, and the figures for Europe-7 are between 2,725 and 222 and 682 and 56 voyages, respectively.

        In this paper, we show the design of a rotary joint transition for the X-band channel in a rotatable microwave communication system. The transition seems complicated to make a channel between two coaxial cables through a cylindrical waveguide. To make a broad-band performance in the X-band with low insertion loss and return loss given the constraint on the length and radius of this complicated-looking cylindrical structure, Genetic Algorithm optimization is adopted to check the validity of an intensive parametric study in the design. The structure is fabricated and tested to show how valid the design method is as well as good frequency responses.

        여름철 계룡산국립공원 탐방로의 열쾌적성 및 어메니티 관리 연구

        본 연구는 산악환경의 기상 특징과 계룡산국립공원 탐방로의 열쾌적성을 파악하고 열쾌적성이 높은 활동 시간 정보, 활동 공간 정보, 활동량 정보를 제공하기 위해 시행되었다. 탐방로의 열쾌적성 분석을 위해 여름철 도심 기온, 국립공원 방재기상관측장비(AWS, Automatic Weather System), 탐방로인 숲길의 평균 기온을 비교하였다. 또한, 계룡산 국립공원의 주요 탐방로 4개 구간의 미기후 요소와 수관울폐도 측정을 위해 총 240개 지점을 조사 후 열쾌적성을 파악 하였다. 도심과 국립공원AWS, 탐방로의 평균 기온을 비교하였을 때, 도심, 갑사AWS, 동학사AWS, 갑사 탐방로, 동학사 탐방로 순으로 평균 기온이 높게 나타났다. 이 결과, 탐방객이 직접 체감하는 탐방로의 열쾌적성을 고려해야 함을 의미한다. 주요 탐방로 4개 구간 조사 결과, 평균 수관울폐도는 동학사~남매탑 구간, 동학사~관음봉 구간, 갑사~연천봉 구간, 갑사~금잔디고개 구간 순으로 높았다. PMV(예상평균온열감)는 활동량이 2.8MET 일 때, 갑사~금잔디고개 구간, 갑사~연천봉 구간, 동학사~남매탑, 동학사~관음봉구간 순으로 높았다. 조사를 통하여, 열쾌적성이 높은 시간 정보, 공간 정보, 활동량 정보를 제시할 수 있었다. 탐방로의 열쾌적성 특성을 파악하여, 탐방로의 어메니티를 높일 수 있는 숲길 관리 방안의 기초를 마련하고자 한다. This study was conducted to understand the weather characteristics of the mountain environment and the thermal comfort of Gyeryongsan National Park trail and to provide information on activity time, activity space, and activity amount. For the analysis of the thermal comfort of the trail, the temperature of the city center in summer, the average temperature of the National Park Disaster Prevention Weather System (AWS), and the trail. Also, Microclimate elements and canopy closure were also measured in four major trails in Gyeryongsan National Park. After investigating a total of 240 points, thermal comfort was identified. When comparing the average temperature of the city center, National Park AWS, and trail, the average temperature was higher in the order of the city center, Gabsa AWS, Donghaksa AWS, Gabsa Trail, and Donghaksa Trail. As a result, it means that the thermal pleasure experienced by visitors should be considered. According to a survey of four major trails, the average canopy closure is Donghaksa~nammaetop route was high in the order of Donghaksa~Gwaneumbong route, Gabsa~Yeoncheonbong route and Gabsa~Geumjandigogae route. When PMV(Predicted Mean Vote) is 2.8MET, The PMV was highter in the order of Gabsa~Geumjandigogae route, Gabsa~ Yeoncheonbong route, Donghaksa~nammaetop route, Donghaksa~Gwaneumbong route. Through the survey, time information, spatial information, and activity information with high thermal comfort could be presented. By grasping the thermal comfort characteristics of the trail, we intend to lay the foundation for forest trail management measures that can increase the amenity of the trail.

        Sustainability of pensions in Asian countries

        Mortality risk is a significant threat to individual life, and quantifying the risk is necessary for making a national population plan and is a traditionally fundamental task in the insurance and annuity businesses. Like other advanced countries, the sustainability of life pensions and the management of longevity risks are becoming important in Asian countries entering the era of aging society. In this study, mortality and pension value sustainability trends are compared and analyzed based on national population and mortality data, focusing on four Asian countries from 1990 to 2017. The result of analyzing the robustness and accuracy of generalized linear/nonlinear models reveals that the Cairns-Blake-Dowd model, the nonparametric Renshaw-Haberman model, and the Plat model show low stability. The Currie, CBD M5, M7, and M8 models have high stability against data periods. The M7 and M8 models demonstrate high accuracy. The longevity risk is found to be high in the order of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan, which is in general inversely related to the population size.

        Organic Dye Solution Nanofiltration by 2D Zn-TCPP(Fe) Membrane – leverage of chemical and fluid dynamic effects

        This study investigates organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) using the membranes composed of 2D Zn-TCPP(Fe) nanosheets. A group of organic dyes with different molecular weights, hydrophilic propertiesand functional groups was selected as probe solutes in ethanol, isopropanol and ethyl acetate,respectively, to examine their OSN characteristics through the Zn-TCPP(Fe) membrane. Theintermolecular interactions of organic solvent, dye and Zn-TCPP(Fe) nanosheets profoundly influencethe mass transfer in the nano channels of the lamellar membrane. Representatively, the isopropanolsolution of Brilliant Blue G dye turns out to have a favorable OSN performance (>90 % rejection with anaverage permenance of 175 L m 2 h 1 bar 1) over 4 h, whereas replacement of isopropanol by ethanolresults in incipient loss of rejection. However, for this ethanol solution feed, incorporating an optimaldose of ZIF-8 nanograins into the nanosheets via co-deposition, a particle-over-lamellae structure formedunveils a significant improvement on OSN. Such boost is attributed to a combinative effect, i.e., alleviatingdye-nanosheet complexation so as to reduce disturbing the lamellar structure as well as to assistdesolvation of the dye over the feed side. To comprehend how solvent-slolute-nanosheet interactionsdominate OSN, besides the experimental characterizations, both visco-molar volume and Stokes-Einsteindiameter that describefluid dynamic properties of solute molecule in a solvent are employed to assist theanalysis. Possessing hydrophilic characteristic, Zn-TCPP(Fe) nanosheet engages strong hydrophilicassociation with hydrophilic dye and solvent, leading to weak OSN performance. Fundamentally, thereare mutual interactions among solvent, solute and nanosheets in this membrane system, in which theprevailed pair of them impacts OSN performance.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present a preferred parts list, establish a search tool for common parts, and propose a development plan for parts management. Methods: When selecting the preferred parts list, the weight of the selection of the military parts and the online site of the civilian parts were taken into account. By establishing a database of selected preferred parts list, we have established a system for searching common parts. Results: The results of this study are as follows; In order to establish parts management work in Korea's defense, it is necessary to improve the Defense Acquisition Program Act, Enforcement Decree (Rules), and the Regulations for Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Development of performance indicators for parts management is required, and establishment of procedures and standards for selection of preferred parts lists is required. Considerations for the selection of preferred parts list include whether they are used a lot in civilian products, whether they are used a lot, whether they are certified suppliers, whether they are national and industrial standard products, whether they perform well considering reliability, durability, and quality, and whether they can be supplied continuously. Conclusion: It is necessary to establish policies and systems related to parts management and to establish criteria for selecting preferred parts list for the development of domestic parts management tasks.

        In this paper, we have described the performance improvement of surveillance radar to prevent damage or malfunction of surveillance radar RF head unit due to the strong reflections caused by artificial obstacles at close range. We have proposed a technique to improve the performance of the RF head unit as a solution to overcome the limitations of the operating system and improve radar performance. We have verified the effectiveness of the improvement by comparing the before and after results applied to actual system.

        Inhibitory effect of 2,4-dichlorophenol on nitrogen removal in a sequencing batch reactor

        We examined the inhibitory effect of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) on nitrogen removal in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. The reactor was operated with FILL, REACT (nitrification: denitrification), SETTLE,DRAW and IDLE phases in the duration ratio of 2 : 12 (9 : 3) : 1 : 1 : 8 for a 24 h cycle time. The deterioration of 2,4-DCP removal efficiency from 100 to 41% was observed when the influent concentration of 2,4-DCP was increased to 30mg/L. The residual 2,4-DCP remaining in the mixed liquor was found to inhibit the nitrification process, resulting in the decrease of nitrogen removal efficiency to 25 %. For kinetic study, the result showed that the experimental data of ammoniacal nitrogen (AN) removal at every stage fitted well to the first-order kinetics equation with high R2 values. The rate constant of AN removal, kAN, decreased with increasing influent concentration of 2,4-DCP, from 0.053 to 0.0006/min when 2,4-DCP concentration increased from 0 to 30 mg/L, respectively. However, the observed gradual recovering of AN removal with respect to the removal efficiency and kinetics during the recovery stage indicated that the inhibitory effect of 2,4-DCP on the nitrification process was reversible.
