Lean NOx Trap (LNT) catalysts are capable of reducing exhaust NOx emissions from diesel engines. LNT stores NOx in lean condition and exhausts N2 by reducing NOx in rich condition. To make exhaust gas rich condition, there are two ways to add a reductant into exhaust gas. One is external injection in exhaust system and the other is method of engine operation condition control. In this study, NOx reduction characteristic of LNT catalysts using engine control for light-duty diesel engine was investigated. If the concentration of reductant is exceeded, excessive amount of reductant will slip throughout LNT and cause another emission problem. Thus LNT regeneration with precise engine control parameters can make higher NOx conversion efficiency and prevent another emission problem.

The numerical study of a compressible flow in a closed coupled catalytic converter system was performed to understand the flow characteristics and to improve the flow distribution of exhaust gases. For steady flow analysis, the effects of geometric factors(junction, mixing pipe, cell shape etc.) on flow characteristic and distribution in substrate are mainly investigated. Unsteady flow analysis shows that there are severe interferences of each pulsating exhaust gas flow that influence greatly on the flow uniformity.<br/>

The shape of unit cell of catalytic converter monolith has an influence on the conversion efficiency and pressure drop characteristics of monolith. The engine performance is influenced by pressure drop of monolith. The properties of design parameters of monoliths were analyzed and the parameters of square monolith were compared with those of triangular monolith. The result would help the monolith designer to make a decision over the design of monolith.<br/>
